Stewart was referring to Bob Costas' much-criticized Sunday Night Football speech about gun violence after Jovan Belcher's murder-suicide, but he could have been talking about shootings at the Aurora, Colorado theater, the Sikh temple in Wisconsin or this latest massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

It's not easy to laugh during times like these, but in this last week before several late night shows go on extended hiatus for the holidays, there were many moments of joy to be found.
Once the video of Mitt Romney dismissing just under half of the country leaked, that number would prove to haunt the rest of his short political career. Not only did Romney end up winning just 47% of the popular vote, but as of this week it's also his post-election approval rating.

So it only seemed fitting to look back at the 47 funniest political videos of the year. From the best political bits on late night, to web videos by Funny or Die, The Onion and other lesser-known producers, to a few unintentionally hilarious moments from the politicians themselves, 2012 was a great year to laugh at politics in America.
Over the past week, late night hosts celebrated the holiday season by giving America the gift of entertainment and getting some pretty good presents of their own.

Stephen Colbert received the greatest gift of all, hosting the four major players from The Hobbit as the "King Tolkien Geek" he is at heart. Jimmy Fallon enlisted friends like Mariah Carey and Tracy Morgan to deliver new essential versions of Christmas classics.

Meanwhile, Jon Stewart was decrying the War on Christmas that Bill O'Reilly was pushing on Fox News and the Tonight Show. In ways that no one can quite grasp yet, it has interrupted and upended the presidential campaign. And of course, least importantly, it threw late night TV into uncertain turmoil.

At the beginning of the week, David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon decided to go forward with their shows even if couldn't safely get audiences to show up. Jimmy Kimmel's first night in Brooklyn was postponed. And Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert took an unprecedented two days off just one week before the 2012 election.

Once the shows were able to get back on the air, it turned into one of the best weeks of late night in recent memory. This was particularly thanks to Jimmy Kimmel, who invited his idol David Letterman and fellow competition Stewart and Colbert to join him in Brooklyn.

Meanwhile in L.A., Conan O'Brien kept things sunny and dry, but you can only imagine that at least a small part of him wished he was still in New York.
From the fiercely competitive GOP primary, to the massive injection of money by super PACs, to the final race to the finish between President Obama and Mitt Romney, voters across the country haven't been able to turn on the television without hearing someone approve some message.

Hanks went on a whirlwind late night tour to promote his new movie Cloud Atlas, starting with a surprise appearance on SNL last week and ending with an impromptu Saving Private Ryan reunion on The Colbert Report.

Trump didn't get quite as much publicity as he would have wanted from his October surprise stunt, but he did get made fun of relentlessly by almost every late night host (as well as the president).

President Obama and Mitt Romney have only met face to face a few times over the last year. Besides the three debates, they appeared hours apart at the Clinton Global Initiative conference and lobbed jokes directly at one another at the Alfred E. Smith dinner.

But in the comedy world, they've been hanging out regularly since Romney rose above his less disciplined GOP rivals. If months of stump speeches, campaign ads, talk show appearances and general punditry haven't helped you choose who to vote for on November 6th, perhaps these direct comparisons between the two candidates will help you make a final decision.

Of those four shows, Kimmel's the only one that tapes live and can actually talk about an event like the debate on the same night it happens. But he produced one of the stand-out clips of the week by asking people on the streets of LA to review the debate before it happened. The other late night shows, which need to wait more than 24 hours to cover many news events, could take a cue from this inspired move.
Jon Stewart lamented President Obama's failures, Stephen Colbert celebrated Mitt Romney's comeback, and David Letterman tried to figure out why Romney won't come on his show.

With the VP debate happening Thursday night, there wasn't a lot of time for the late night hosts to weigh in, but Jimmy Fallon's recap Friday night through the eyes of Obama and Romney was one notable exception.
