Jessica DuLong, one of the world’s only female fireboat engineers, is also a journalist whose work has appeared in Newsweek International, Rolling Stone, Psychology Today, CosmoGIRL!, Today’s Machining World, and numerous other publications. In her book, My River Chronicles: Rediscovering the Work that Built America; A Personal and Historical Journey (Free Press), DuLong investigates what the U.S. is losing as society as it continues to devalue production, manufacturing, and hands-on work. In exploring the changing meaning of work in America, DuLong shares her own experiences of learning to navigate a traditionally male world, interweaving unforgettable present-day characters and events with four centuries of Hudson River history.
