Joseph Humire

Global Security Expert, Executive Director of the Center for a Secure Free Society (SFS)

Joseph M. Humire is a global security expert, specializing in asymmetric warfare. His research and investigations on transnational organized crime, threat finance, and nuclear proliferation in Latin America, as well as Islamic extremism and Iran’s influence in the Western Hemisphere, has been sought after by various entities within the U.S. Department of Defense and intelligence community, as well as prominent think tanks and universities throughout the Americas. Moreover, Mr. Humire is an eight-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served combat tours in Iraq and Liberia, and took part in the multinational training exercise in Latin America: UNITAS 45-04.

Currently, Mr. Humire serves as the Executive Director of the Center for a Secure Free Society (SFS), a global think tank based in Washington D.C. focusing on advancing security and freedom around the world through an international network of security and defense scholars that focus on the nexus between security, defense, and economics. Prior to this, Mr. Humire was the Director of Institute Relations at the Atlas Economic Research Foundation where he trained and advised a network of more than 300 think tanks in over 85 countries around the world.

As a global security expert, Mr. Humire has testified before the U.S. Congress and the Canadian and Brazilian Parliament on a variety of security and defense issues, primarily related to asymmetric threats in Latin America. In October 2014, Mr. Humire released his first book on “Iran’s Strategic Penetration of Latin America,” published by Lexington Books, an imprint of Rowman & Littlefield Publishing.

Mr. Humire publishes regularly in Fox News, the Washington Times, and the Huffington Post. And has featured scholarly articles in Small Wars Journal and the Journal for International Security Affairs. He is frequently interviewed on major English and Spanish-language broadcasts throughout the hemisphere, such as Univision, Telemundo, CNN Español, Sun News Network (Canada), Nuestre Tele Noticias-24 (Colombia), Mira TV and Mega TV (Florida) and the Foro Inter-Americano of Voice of America (Wash. D.C.).

Mr. Humire holds a degree in Economics and Global Affairs from George Mason University and is fluent in Spanish and English, with a working knowledge of Quechua and Portuguese.
