Dr. Lars Walton serves the California State University as Chief of Staff to Chancellor Timothy P. White. In this role, he serves as a primary senior advisor to chief executive of the largest university system in the United States. Walton provides strategic advice and consultation to the Chancellor on higher education policy, federal and state legislation, public affairs, higher education finance, legal and human resources matters. Additional to his duties Walton directly manages the executive search process for the California State University, which includes the recruitment of Presidents for the 23 campus system.
Prior to joining the California State University, Walton served the University of California, Riverside as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Government and Community Relations. In this role, he had oversight of UCR’s relationships in the broader Riverside community, Sacramento and Washington, D.C., with constituencies ranging from neighborhood stakeholders to the Congress, in addition to leading the UCR Palm Desert Center.
Before a career in higher education, Walton served as political director to Congressman Christopher Cox and worked on numerous federal and statewide campaigns as well as time as an intern in the White House, Office of Public Liaison under President George W. Bush.
Walton holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Doctorate in Education from UCLA, where he conducted research on university funding and public good creation.
