Perry N Halkitis, Ph.D., M.S., MPH is the incoming Dean and Professor of Biostatistics and Social and Behavioral Health Sciences at the School of Public Health at Rutgers University. Prior to that role, he was Professor of Global Public Health, Applied Psychology, and Medicine, Director of the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior & Prevention Studies (CHIBPS), and the inaugural Senior Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs at the College of Global Public Health at New York University. From 2005-2013, he was the founding Associate Dean for Research and Doctoral Studies at the Steinhardt School and he also served as Co-Director of he TL1 pre-doctoral training program at the NYU Medical School-Health and Hospitals Corporation Clinical and Translation Science Institute. Dr. Halkitis’ program of research examines the intersection between the HIV epidemic, drug abuse, and mental health burden, and the biological, behavioral, psychosocial, and structural factors that predispose these overlapping epidemics. CHIBPS (www.chibps.org), the research center he founded, conducts cutting-edge bio-behavioral studies, serves as a training site for the next generation of scholars, and partners with community agencies to conduct studies for and with the LGBT population. His last book, The AIDS Generation: Stories of Survival and Resilience, is a 2014 Lambda Literary award nominee, and recipient of the American Psychological Association Distinguished Book Award in LGBT Psychology. Dr. Halkitis also is author of Methamphetamine Addiction: Biological Foundations, Psychological Factors, and Social Consequences, which was published in 2009, and editor of two books, HIV + Sex: The Psychological and Interpersonal Dynamics of HIV-seropositive Gay and Bisexual Men's Relationships. (American Psychological Association, 2005), and Barebacking: Psychosocial and Public Health Perspectives (2006, Haworth Press). Dr. Halkitis is currently working on his new book, Out in Time, which will examine the coming out life stories of gay men across three generations. Author of over 200 peer-reviewed academic manuscripts, Dr. Halkitis is also often cited in the press. His research program has been funded by various private and public entities including the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New York Community Trust, and American Psychological Foundation, among others, at approximately a total over $25 million. Dr. Halkitis is Editor in Chief of the journal, Behavioral Medicine, and serves on numerous other editorial boards. He is the recipient of numerous awards from both professional and community-based organizations. He is an elected a fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine, The Society of Behavioral Medicine, and in four divisions of the American Psychological Association, and is a member of the Nationswell Council. Throughout his career, Dr. Halkitis has been on the forefront, fighting for the rights of those infected with and affected by HIV, as well as being an outspoken advocate for the health of the LGBTQ population. He is actively involved in all aspects of community building and empowerment through the dissemination and translation of the innovative, timely, and valuable public health research that he and his team at CHIBPS undertake. He serves on the Board of Directors of The Generations Project and the HIV League, and has previously served on the boards of Body Positive, GMHC, and the New York State Public Health Association.
