Tim Giago Retired

Tim Giago is a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe born, raised and educated on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. I was the founder and first president of the Native American Journalists Association, inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame, South Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame and into the Native American Journalists Association Hall of Fame. I was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard with the Class of 1991. Served with the United States Navy in Korea in 1952 and 1953. Author of Children Left Behind and Notes from Indian Country Volumes I and II. Awarded H.L Mencken Award in 1985. Initiated Year of Reconciliation between Indians and Whites and legislation creating Native American Day in South Dakota in 1990 under Gov. George Mickelson (R-SD). Received University of Missouri Distinguished Journalism Award in 1990.
