Major conflict could return to southern Sudan unless there is urgent international action to save the peace agreement that ended one of Africa's longest and deadliest wars.

The needs in Haiti now are enormous, as most basic services just aren't functioning. At the best of times, daily life in Haiti for the 80% or so of the population, who have to live on less than two dollars a day, is a daily struggle.

Outside a morgue in Haiti, piles of bodies were covered with flies. There was no water to make plaster casts for broken limbs; and water used to mop the floor was black. "It smelled bad; it smelt of death," my colleague said.

Less than two days after the earthquake which devastated Haiti's capital, Marguerite Ulysse gave birth to a baby girl, Neika. The nearest hospital was destroyed. Marguerite's home had collapsed.
