Friday Talking Points -- A Quick One

| Posted 06.01.2012 | Politics

The old reactionary Democratic "We're just as against drugs as the Republicans!" knee-jerkism seems to be fading, over time. Just as Democrats woo the "gay vote" and the "green vote" and all other such demographics, sooner or later they'll realize that there is indeed a "marijuana vote" out there to be tapped into.

Thinking Big About the Next Four Years

| Posted 06.13.2012 | Politics

The Romney and Obama campaigns have already proven that they're up to speed on negative ads. But there has to be some substance -- some positive and very concrete things the candidates stand for -- in order for voters to make an informed choice.

Friday Talking Points -- Rubio Talks, Obama Acts

| Posted 06.15.2012 | Politics

Marco Rubio's chances of becoming Mitt Romney's running mate just got a little worse.

Romney the 'Can't Decider'

| Posted 06.18.2012 | Politics

Can any Romney supporter explain exactly what Mitt's position is on the Rubio/Obama "mini DREAM Act"? Having no position -- or every possible position at the same time -- is simply indefensible when you consider the job he's running for.

Checks and Balances

Today's political commenters often misuse the concept of "checks and balances" to refer directly to politics. This is just flat-out wrong.

Friday Talking Points -- Morning Phones A-Ringing

Attacking Romney on leadership will bear a lot more fruit than just attacking him on the policy alone (or lack thereof, to be precise). Because leadership is a quality that all voters consider when making up their minds -- not just one or two demographics.

2012 Electoral Math

| Posted 06.25.2012 | Politics

This column series will examine the race between Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama in the only way that is useful for actually predicting its outcome: a state-by-state look at how each candidate is doing. National polling is almost completely useless in election prognostication.

Popular Vote Speculation Interlude

| Posted 06.27.2012 | Politics

I like to engage in the sheerest of blue-sky speculation about possible interesting outcomes that could happen. This time around, the scenario I've been hearing bandied about is that Barack Obama wins the Electoral College vote, but Mitt Romney wins the popular vote.

Friday Talking Points -- Obama Cares

| Posted 06.29.2012 | Politics

Republicans have had two years now to come up with a plan of their own. They haven't. Mitt Romney had a plan, and it's now called Obamacare. Mitt doesn't like to be reminded of this, but he doesn't seem to have any new plan that I've heard of.
