Making art is about taking risk. Embarrassing serious artists when they are taking important risks seems hardly a smart approach that will foster additional experimentation.
At first blush, my Arts in Crisis tour stop in Grand Rapids seemed ill-timed. Yet I arrived at the first week of ArtPrize, an innovative new arts project that has electrified the city and the region.
Why can't PBS be reorganized? Why can't there be a mix of local and national programming? Why can't the parent organization determine the best in American arts and fund its broadcast across the nation?
When large, white organizations produce minority works they typically select the "low hanging fruit," the most popular works featuring the most famous minority performers. This invariably hurts minority arts organizations.
