Gallerists, notorious (and pitiable) for their need to answer to public taste, have gone out on a limb to import not just paintings, but art that asserts the "condition of painting."
The thinking of painting is not a mystery (although it is part of painting's mystique), but you either have to need it (whether or not you paint) or be open to it. If you like painting, you "get" painting.
Now that Painting Is Back, the loft party's over. Are today's painters ready to take over the universe the way the neo-expressionists did?
