For me, becoming a grandmother felt like a greater transition than motherhood was. Motherhood held promise, youth and fertility. Becoming a grandmother reeked of age.

In short, after thirty-one years of marriage, although it sometimes feels like Paradise Lost, on days like the other day when he's in his white coat, Paradise remains. It takes me back to a boy who gave me a key attached to a roller skate and, suddenly, there's clarity.

The letters are addressed to "dearest" and "darling," both epithets I never heard either of my parents call the other. In one, my mother writes, "My dearest, I fly with you in my sleep" and then "I awake and look at the clock and estimate where you are."
