Immigrants For Sale

Posted: 05/12/11 03:52 PM ET

Georgia is the latest state to pass an anti-immigrant bill like SB1070, with Governor Nathan Deal expected to sign it tomorrow. Georgia is also home to the largest private prison in the country. Coincidence? Not even close.

It's hardly a secret that private prison corporations like Corrections Corporation of America and The GEO group, along with right-wing lobbying group ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) and a few pocketed state legislators like Russell Pearce in Arizona, have been at it -- deliberately promoting and designing laws aimed at incarcerating immigrants and turning the prison system into an incredibly lucrative business.

Just last year the private prison industry secured close to $5 billion through state and government elicited contracts of which an increasing percentage is attributed to migrant detention facilities and bed spaces. An NPR report outlined how CCA aims to translate the anti-immigrant rhetoric and political void into a long-lasting cash drive -- believing that immigrants will provide a fresh influx of 'guests' in their less then onerous 'hotel' cells. Even worse, CCA founder Tomas Beasly once called his scheme 'more profitable' than selling burgers or cars -- a clear indication that any sense of justice in the prison industry will be forever trumped by cash flows and profit margins.

It is clear that for CCA, along with the GEO Group and Management and Training, immigrants are a product -- one that is for sale to the highest vendor. They view locked-up immigrants as the next big share jump, stock option, bonus incentive or any other motive that tickles their multi-billion dollar fancy. They have no shame admitting so -- every year the private prison industry gets together for a major convention to essentially design strategies that will fill the more then 150,000 bed spaces they currently own.

There is always one question that lingers: What happens once these spaces are filled? Their answer: Get the IMMIGRANTS. There will forever be an immigration issue -- so what better way to stay in business? Round-em up like cattle, shackle them up by feet and hands and throw them in a cell where they'll most likely get lost in a system ill-designed to provide justice to anyone except their self-serving patrons.

What is even more disappointing is that government officials -- from the state and local levels to the federal administration -- have decided to abandon any possibility for real comprehensive immigration approach. Instead they continue to allow profit-seeking corporations to fill the gaps left by inadequate policy, offering up YOUR tax dollars and creating yet another industry bubble that uses immigrant persecution as their main throttle.

The immigration debate needs a serious, integrated national and foreign policy plan -- one the deals with the root of the issue. What it doesn't need are the hands of businessmen looking to make another buck. What we get are ill-advised, constitutionally useless discriminatory laws like SB1070 -- laws that have caused more harm to the debate, the economy and the nation's political discourse.

This model prioritizes profit ahead of brains. Money ahead of humanity. Greed in place of decency. It's 'immigration' being put up for sale. We can no longer afford our apathy. The longer we wait to build coherent, legal solutions to the issue, the more abusive practices continue to prosper. It's time to take a very close look at what private prisons are doing to our security, our social fabric and our Latino communities.

They are using us as scapegoats to fill the coffers -- as pawns in the next Ponzi scheme. CCA, ALEC and their cronies are not in it to "fix" the immigration issue. Who are we kidding? They love it -- the less immigrants to put behind bars, the less Latinos to incarcerate while waiting for proof of papers, the less individuals to get lost in the system--the less dollars deposited into their bank accounts. They don't care about who is affected, who dies in their care, who faces persecution by the hateful laws they are peddling.

It's all about the profit.

They are making a killing, and you are paying for it.

"designing laws aimed at incarcerating immigrants and turning the prison system into an incredibly lucrative business." That should read "incarcerating illegal aliens".

Illegal aliens have turned sneaking into the US into a lucrative business pretending to be US citizens and working in a country where working is forbidden. Here's a solution for you, don't break the law or go home.

This is the US of A! We are CAPITALISTS! Remember? If you don't like our system, immigrate to CHINA! (Our new Landlord!) We have to make money on anything or everything, including illegal human beings! Only Americans have the right to live! Isn't that what our ancestors did? They came from a foreign land, came here, massacred, raped, robbed, & enslaved the citizens here, then declared themselves citizens of this country. Now, we the descendants of those criminals must continue the legacy of our ancestors!

Really this article is more an indictment of the for-profit prison systems than of imprisoning unregistered foreigners.
Here in Louisiana Jindal is trying to return the state to earlier and worse times.
And it is true when the profit motive exists, there is an incentive to send many more people, citizens and foreigners alike to jail for little or no reason.
Certain things really need to be run strictly by the government. Among them, public schools, the military, the postal system, the utilities and the police, fire services and jails.
Trying to make a profit off of those just hurts the people and the government is in a better position to control the expense of those endeavors.
Yes it hurts foreign nationals too. But more importantly for-profit prisons work against justice for citizens.

Hey Axel... you need an editor. It's "fewer immigrants" and "fewer Latinos" and "fewer individuals"...not "less."

The for profit prison system should frighten all of us. It's not just about illegal immigration. Not long ago there was a judge who was exposed for sentencing juveniles in his court to unduly long sentences of incarceration, regardless of evidence of guilt, in return for bribes paid by the private prison they were remanded to. If judges can be bought to destroy children, who is safe? End the for profit prison system. It is time to tear down the constructs of corruption in this country and write the laws anew.

For profit prisons is a clear example of a lost society. We should be ashamed that we value profits over lives, decency and dignity.

More importantly, we value profit over justice....punishment and recidivism over rehabilitation, and dogma over common sense...

Again we see that the culture corruption is the number one problem in America that affects almost every policy decision that is made by governments at every level. We need a massive campaign in favor of campaign finance reform that will severely reduce the level of corruption so that real solutions to our problems could be found.

Needs to be rewritten in teaparty speech and posted elsewhere. i.e. Corporate Behemouths use lobbying connections to rip off taxpayers under the guise of immigration policy. You think it's bad you already pay for their healthcare and schooling well nothing costs more than incarceration and ask California about the costs of constitutionally mandated health coverage for inmates.....

I didnt see anything about "immigrants" in the bill. I see some stuff about criminals and trespassers using resources designed for American citizens.

No one is targeting immigrants, they are targeting illegal aliens, rightfully so. To compare those who knowingly and willingly violated our immigration laws with those who legally and lawfully immigrated into our country is shameful. What kind of American is this author and others who are demand we turn a blind eye to lawbreakers to appease a special interest group. Why don't those who advocate for illegal aliens demand their countries of origin give them a better quality of life as oppose to making other countries poor and disenfranchised citizens, the problem of the United States, that is the right thing to do.Not make demands upon America.
11:14 AM on 05/13/2011
There is an entire industry devoted to aiding and abetting illegal immigration. Given a tradeoff between seeing this industry grow and seeing a rapidly growing private sector system for incarcerating illegal immigrants, there's no question which side I'll take!

Here is something for Mr. Caballero to chew on. Put these horrible, evil private prisons out of business by simply obeying the law of the land. Illegal immigrants, by their own actions, feed the so-called monster, do they not? If they are simply immigrants, that means they are legal citizens and should be treated no different than any other criminal. The more prisons the better, private or public.

The private prisons also want to put citizens in there also and are bribing governments to that end. The existence of such an organised mob tasked with imprisoning as many people as possible should frighten reasonable people but I guess the Right is too taken by the just world fallacy to ever believe that they could end up in the trap. It can't ever happen to them, they are too pure, too good.

The only ponzi sdheme here is the whole illegal immigration issue!

Any society that is dependant on illegal immigrants is patently unsustainable. We must be willing and able to pay a living wage for menial tasks. If the only way to get them done is through illegal immigration then what happens if the current illegals get legalized - they will demand a living wage. Costs will go up and the next batch of illegals will arrive but we will have doubled our unemeployment rate while hurting our most vulnerable citzens in the process. I doubt that many new jobs will be created - so employment rates will remain where they are (for now) so I really don't see the supposed economic benefit of legalization!

How about this - we allow amnesty for current illegals on the basis that once their country of origin is determined - it gets factored into new immigration quotas like the diversity lottery allocation, thereby ensuring that any future immigration will be fairly available to all nations.

But by the same token the allocation for nations having had high levels of illegal immigration will be restricted till the other world nations have reached an equitable balance.

I thought they were passing laws targeting illegal immigrants. The only way to deal with illegal immigration is enforcement, mandate e-verify for jobs and renting apartments or houses. Fine businesses that hire them and put the CEO or owners in jail. Deny federal funds to an organization that know of illegal immigrants and they do not turn them in to ICE. It is not that it can't be done, our lawmakers don't have the will to get it done.

Agree. It's difficult to target individuals who are constantly on the move. Target businesses and farms that profit from the cheap labor. The "good Americans" who knowingly hire illegal labor are selling us all up the river. They profit, and everybody else pays.

How about we just let them enter legally. Businesses want to hire them and they want to work. Supply and demand.

Businesses don't want to hire them if they have to pay them a legal wage. Other than agriculture, there is not a want for labor in this country.
