7 Biggest Beauty Blunders By Post 50 Women

Posted: 06/29/2012 9:34 am

Post 50s are always looking out for the next 'new thing' -- that one diet that will help us drop 15 pounds, or the skin cream with the latest anti-aging ingredient that promises to erase every wrinkle -- instead of just taking some good, simple advice about what really works (and what doesn't). No matter how many magazine articles or books we read about how to look (and feel) fab over 50, a lot of us are still stuck in bad beauty habits that make us look anything but fab.

Here are the most common beauty blunders, and the simple things you can do about them:

Loading Slideshow...
  • #1 Clothes That Are Too Loose And Baggy

In an attempt to hide or cover up our bodies, especially if we've packed on a few post-menopausal pounds, we end up looking heavier. No matter what our size, a woman over 50 should have the right fit--not tight, but a fit that defines the waist. Best way to do that? Make a great tailor your new best friend.

  • #2 Trying To Dress 'Young' Instead Of 'Great'

We live in a world that's constantly shouting in our ears, "Young is better!" ... but don't listen! We've earned every crow's foot we have, and buying into that nonsense is the perfect recipe for a fashion fail. In Barbara Hannah Grufferman's book, "The Best of Everything After 50," she interviewed Diane von Furstenberg, who said the key to looking great is to be comfortable. If you're tugging at your too-short skirt you'll be more focused on covering your thighs than on what you should be engaged in. There are no style rules, but there are definite guidelines, the most important one being this: Just because you're over 50 doesn't mean you have dress like a frump. Update your wardrobe with a few essential basics and build from there.

  • #3 Wearing The Wrong Bra

The majority of American women wear the wrong bra size, and it shows. We just don't take the time to get properly fitted by an expert. The right bra can make all the difference in how your clothes fit, and how you look in them. Make sure to get a few different ones for specific clothes, including one specifically for wearing under a t-shirt or other smooth shirts, and buy them in colors that are close to your own skin color for wearing under white or light-colored tops.

  • #4 Not Starting A Retinol Product Soon Enough

There are no magic amulets for reversing skin damage, but products such as Retin-A are as close as you can get. They work to exfoliate the skin while you sleep, and help build collagen. (Using a retinol product on the skin makes it even more sensitive to the sun, so a product with an SPF of at least 40 is essential).

  • #5 Applying Too Much Makeup In An Attempt To 'Cover Up'

Women over 50 often try to cover everything up by applying too much concealer, foundation, blush, everything. Foundation should be applied very sparingly, and only then will you be able to see if concealer is even necessary. Keep it light, with pinkish tones for the lips, and rosy for the cheeks. Try a waterproof eyeliner and very lightly follow the last line, top and bottom. A lighter touch is key to a fresh, pretty face.

  • #6 Going With 'Single Process' To Cover The Gray

Using the single process approach to covering gray can create a single block of color, very often either too light or too dark, without any contrast. This can drain the face and be aging. Consider highlights along with your natural color (including the gray), or mixing highlights with the single process.

  • #7 Still Trying To 'Diet' To Lose Weight

Diets don't work. Eating, and eating often, does. Diets that focus on a specific category of food (protein, for example) aren't sustainable. Eating small meals consisting of whole grains, lean proteins, dark leafy greens and lots of water go a long way in keeping hunger at bay, and the pounds off.

The most important advice of all, though, is this:

Love yourself, love your life, stay as healthy as you can, move your body, be informed, use your mind, be bold, be brave, walk with confidence, live with style ... and you will always have the best of everything.

What happened to hitting the gym to build lean muscle mass, which is not just a contributor to good looks (all women are envious of another's six pack abs) but to longevity too.

I am almost 65 and I thank my Mother every day for getting me hooked on taking care of my skin. God has been good to me, my hair came in a beautiful platinum and I have a great hairdresser who gives me a cut that perfectly fits me. There is no mold...women are beautiful and individual, If you look good in make up, use it, it's fun!
Spend time knowing who you are and embrace who you are no then have fun?

If I see one more surgically enhanced, botoxed, hair dyed, overly made up 60-something trying to look like she's 40, I'm going to scream. You don't look younger, you just look desperate.

REAL beauty is glowing health, an infectious joy, self awareness. Please spare me the Stepford wives.

I'm 49 and have found that highlights tend to make women my age look too contrived. I found a good colour that isn't too light and works with my fair skin. It looks far better than the streaks did. And it's much quicker, since I do it at home. I have never used retinol products and resent being told to do so. I don't see any articles admonishing men for not using anti-wrinkle creams soon enough. As for getting the right bra size: get a Sears catalogue and go the section that gives instructions on how to fit yourself for a bra. I wasn't sure, but it worked. I now have good fitting bras. Wear what you like and eat well. Get rid of the packaged foods and stick with what you know is good for you. I agree with the makeup suggestions: don't wear more as you age. You'll end up looking harsh, rather than younger.

#6--Hair color is so variable and depends upon the individual. It isn't "one size fits all". Personally, I don't think highlights are for everyone--it really depends on the base hair color and the the complexion of the individual. One thing I see a lot of is older women who go way too light with their hair color and look washed out as a result.

I personally think the gray mixed in with color look is just plain ugly most of the time, but again depending on the base color of the hair and the shade of gray. But with most colors of hair, it just isn't attractive.

The make-up thing is way too vague. Some older women look stunning in extreme make-up, some look better natural. Learn what works for you.

I agree. It depends on the individual. I didn't embrace the natural look when I was young and I don't embrace it now.

#7 is so wrong. If you want to lose weight after 50 you need to do something to build muscle. As we get older, we lose muscle unless we work to build it. Muscle burns calories more than fat tissue. Otherwise, you just have to keep limiting calorie intake more and more each year. Doesn't work.
Building muscle can also build bone. As women, we are more susceptible to osteoporosis unless we use those muscles in ways that lay down more bone tissue.

Stretching, good posture, simple style and good shoes and at least one great purse are really important. A beautiful silk scarf or two makes an outfit look refined. The best advice in my opinion is to tip REALLY WELL if you love your hair dresser, a good hairdresser is priceless. Also finding a good tailor and a really good dry cleaner are musts in my book.
Plus clean out the closet frequently. If it was a mistake six months ago it will not improve with age like a fine wine. Skip so-called sales unless you have a sales person you know and trust and who will call you if something fabulous comes up on the sale rack. I've bought more stuff in the past at a sale because it was such a mark-down only to bring it home and asked myself "what was I thinking"?

The best accessory for anyone over 50 (or under) - a musical instrument. Play music with friends and folks won't be thinking about how you are dressed or what make up you have on. It will keep your fingers and your brain nimble and a smile on your face. All of which are anti-feeling aged.

I so love this post! I am so weary of women in their 50's and 60's who own every cosmetic and handbag made but haven't developed a single ounce of talent or wit.

Thanks. I bought a bass 15 years ago and have not bought make up sense. And I cancelled my television cause I needed the money for music lessons.

LOL! I'm in the city, west coast, and I see it all the time. Short hair is fine if it's feminine and stylish, but the overly short, mannish, wash and go cuts are very aging and not flattering to anyone.

"Love yourself, love your life, stay as healthy as you can, move your body, be informed, use your mind, be bold, be brave, walk with confidence, live with style ... and you will always have the best of everything."
Love that!
