The Ten Most Popular Black Celebrity Hairstyles

Posted: 09/02/2012 9:00 am

Internet search statistics yield valuable insights into the things people are thinking about, and the questions they most want answered. I recently posted a blog about female celebrities with the most Googled hair in the world. The winner was Lady GaGa, with 40,500 global monthly searches.

Next, I thought it might be interesting to check out the global monthly search stats on the hairstyles of black celebrities, to see whose was the most popular. The top ten list is a diverse group, consisting of seven recording artists, two actresses, one television presenter, one supermodel and one First Lady; (you can guess who). The list is almost exclusively African American, with just two black Brits -- Leona Lewis and Naomi Campbell -- in the top ten. Overall, two names dominate the table -- Rihanna and Beyoncé -- whose rankings are as much to do with their overall popularity as singing stars as it is to do with the particulars of their hair choices. The top ten also yields a few surprises -- Michelle Obama's hair is more popular than Naomi Campbell's for example, while Halle Berry's short crop beats Nicki Minaj's restless plethora of multi-coloured weaves. In the battle of the television personalities, Tyra Banks is in at number five, while Oprah doesn't make the list at all.

Check out the full listing to see who scores highest:

Wow, if these hairstyles are the most popular, we have problems; It shows too many chemicals, weaves, wigs and possibly a blowout or two. It is time for "Good Hair" part 2. There are many ways to style our hair. Celebrities have so many stylist to make their natural hair healthy and beautiful.

Yes, let's all celebrate the Asian Indian hairstyles the majority of these "weaved" women are wearing!

Now don't get me wrong it's awesome that Black women have so much choice for their hair...but it's not reflected here amongst the biracial beauties and wigs/weaves.

Not one natural non-mixed woman on this list! (Well except the great FLOW)

Black hair?

Most of these "Black" people are interesting examples of how the "one drop rule" is still pervasive in our culture or how these racial classifications are ridiculous and useless.

Yes, why is Mariah or Leona Lewis (or Zoe for that matter) on this list?
03:23 PM on 09/04/2012
Dunno - because mixed race and Black is the same thing to some folks? Or because the author let google dictate the definition of "Black" or because one "Black" ancestor is all you need? Because they have great hair?

Weaves and extension do NOT count in my book. It has to be their own hair. I don't care who disagrees. I have long hair, am Caucasian and it's frizzy as hell in summer. It takes me about an hour to wash, blow dry, then carefully straighten it before I would set foot outdoors.

I went out once au naturel and I nearly killed a man walking a dog. Never again.

Yes, the poor man stared at me like I was some kind of latter day hippie. Never again. This time I might really kill someone.

I'm talking frizzy like a poodle, I'm talking so frizzy I have to walk through wide doors just to get inside. I'm talking frizzyiness that no comb can get through, no brush can tame, no gel is strong enough (I tried concrete once....didn't work).

I let it go natural at home, but keep the blinds closed, lest the meter man sees me (AND I walk around naked sometimes) and has a heart attack. Yes, you might say I have black hair sometimes.

MARIAH'S MOM IS IRISH AND HER DAD IS A DARK SKIN VENEZUELAN & ZOE IS PUERTO RICAN AND DOMINICAN AND HOW IS THAT CONSIDERED BLACK HAIR ????? AND THEIR HAIR IS NATURAL JUST BLOWN OUT!!!
09:40 AM on 09/04/2012
Ummmm....they're black people too just ask them and they WILL tell you so. I get you're point though, you can't talk about black hair and only show biracial hair or weave and wigs from India. That's simple laziness on the author's part if not an interesting look into the mind of one who thinks this is the best we can do with our hair.

Um, at least 8 of those photos are WIGS, not hairstyles; and a lot of the "celebrities" pictured are mixed race.

The Title of this article should have said, "The Twelve Most Popular Black Celebrity Real & Fake Hairstyles". I counted 12 people in that pic? Out of the 12 there are only 3 Women that are wearing their own natural hair. Let's keep it real.

Most of these styles are wigs and weaves so I dont get it. Its not real. I do like the natural hair like Mrs. Obama. The other ones are fake and Kelly Rowland you know that isnt your hair.

Michelle's hair is relaxed, not natural. But yes, at least it grows out of her scalp.

Very sad how many women don't like their natural hair. My two blond nieces both have beautiful blond hair--one has straight hair and the other has beautiful natural curls. One spends hours curling her straight hair and the other spends hours straightening her curly hair.

I get it that black women have been told that "good" hair is hair that is straight. That is sad.

it's great to have really versatile hair with which you can achieve a lot of "looks," like we see with Mrs. Obama, but it is disheartening when someone feels the need to replace their true hair with something that isn't them. What message does this send to little girls?
09:33 PM on 09/02/2012
Mrs Obama has nice hair. It doesnt lk like a wig. It is time for Hollywood to loosen their wigs, weaves or anytype of phony hair. Alot of them have nice hair but they dont want to wear it out. They are ashamed. Once in awhile it is okay to wear the fake stuff but we as your audience lk to see it our way.

I don't know whose picture is the #2, but it sure isn't Zoe Saldana.
