Five Tequila Cocktails, From Savory to Sweet, Spicy to Sour

Posted: 09/28/10 07:02 PM ET

I created these recipes to highlight Los Feliz' extensive tequila selection and show the versatility of tequila. For the recipes, I wanted to highlight four major taste sensations -- Savory, with the Chai Tea cocktail, Sweet with the Indian Summer Watermelon Mojito and the Hibiscus Margarita, Spicy with the Jalepeno Cilantro Margarita, and Sour with the Tequila Fizz.

Each of the drinks range from the more complex flavors, to the simple and traditional and easy to recreate at home. Different tequila brands can be substituted for the ones I recommend here, but you should stick within the same category of tequila recommended.

Lastly, I'd encourage you to find ingredients that are the freshest possible, and organic, and I'd recommend shopping at local farmer's markets to find fresh and interesting ingredients. For example, for a fun twist in the mojito, try a lemon cucmber, which I found this week at the greenmarket.

1/4 cup Organic Cucumber
1/4 cup Organic Watermelon
1 Tbsp. Organic Agave Nectar
1/2 oz Fresh Organic Lime Juice
6 Organic Mint Leaves

Muddle organic cucumber and organic watermelon thoroughly.

Rip mint leaves.

Combine tequila + organic agave nectar and shake.

Strain over fresh ice in a collins glass.

Garnish with an organic cucumber wheel and mint sprig.

*Buy local produce from farmers markets when available.
**The closer, the fresher, the better.

New York City tequila bar Los Feliz (109 Ludlow St.) is an intriguing multilevel Taqueria and Tequileria in Manhattan's Lower East Side, featuring New York City's most impressive tequila list, with more than 150 makes. The restaurant also serves a seasonal, gourmet Mexican menu prepared by Chef Julieta Ballesteros. The space is divided into three levels, The Taqueria, The Cobble Room, and The Lounge. Each room provides a distinctively unique atmosphere and experience - from an intimate dinner to a late night dance party.

The watermelon/cucumber mojito is delicious - however, laws of color tell you that since green (cucumber) and red(watermelon) are complimentary colors (opposite), they cancel each other out and make the drink a PERFECT, but unappetizing BROWN !!! Double the watermelon and halve the cucumber. Then the drink will have the reddish hue as shown on the pic.

I agree with previous commenters -- Ben, it's great that you use organic and fair trade ingredients in your recipes, but including "organic" or "fair trade" in each of the recipe descriptions, makes you sound overly "granola" and pretentious. Just say in the body of the article that you prefer and encourage organic and fair trade ingredients when available (or even that, if it's not available, make a different cocktail with organic ingredients).

These mostly all sound good especially the mojito. Haven't found the Topo Chico as yet.

Topo Chico is just sparkling mineral water, usually found in your store's ethnic or Mexican aisle.

what, with all the 'exotic' ingredients, in addition to the tequila, I'll stick with the straight shots.

watched some whole PBS thing on tequila production in Mexico(field to bottle) and then realized I had a near-full bottle in the cupboard. So I had to toast my education of tequila production in Mexico(and
almost ready for another bottle).

We made watermelon margaritas this summer, it's the perfect fruit for drinking with a decent tequila..subtle enough that it allows the flavor of the spirit through and not too sweet either.

These look pretty good, but I'm curious if anyone has a good cocktail idea for a smoky, earthy mezcal. I dont' care for it straight and the smokiness is diffcult to pair with other flavors. Anyone?

Cube some watermelon and freeze it. Use the frozen fruit as your ice, add some fresh lime juice and tequila, then put it all in a blender.

Indeed, though I imagine the preening bartender who provided these drinks recipes wouldn't deign to pass out unless the floorboards were certified organic or, perhaps, reclaimed barnwood!

Fair trade isn't a brand, and chai tea is redundant. Nevertheless, many of these look delish!
