Just Don't Click on Sarah Palin

What's Your Reaction?

Why Why Why Is Oprah Supporting Sarah Palin By Having Her On Her Show?

I asked this question on Twitter, and these are the responses I got:

@stylemakertv doesn't she know -- ignore it, it goes away. RT @BethArnold Why why why is Oprah supporting Sarah Palin by having her on her show

@3samovar WHY INDEED? RT @BethArnold Why why why is Oprah supporting Sarah Palin by having her on her show?

@elissastein @BethArnold I think she lost track of her center and is now about sensationalism. Sad.

@joolzgirl @BethArnold heavens, I don't know!!! Its a very good question!

@olmanrvr @BethArnold Oprah's just like the rest; It's all about ratings..dat's all.

Yes, those ratings. We all knew that, but doesn't Oprah have enough money -- hundreds of millions of dollars -- that she doesn't really need more, and so those pesky ratings shouldn't matter in the "O" big picture? So the question ultimately was: why promote the ridiculous phenomenon that SP has become -- and help the Britney Spears of politics make millions of dollars herself?

Surely, Oprah isn't trying to be "fair" now, because she didn't have SP on her show during the absolutely absurd presidential campaign. I say absolutely absurd, because SP was a joke of a candidate.

If one has any thought of mentioning anything about feminism here, then bite one's tongue.

I met Oprah at a Spa 17 years ago and had a great time with her. I admired what she'd done enormously. Our group really bonded while we were there, and Oprah called me on the night of Bill Clinton's election to congratulate me. So thoughtful. But really, can't Oprah do or not do anything in the world that she does or does not want to do?

Sorry, if her viewer numbers are going down. But she's had a great run, right? She's not over and done, but what would happen to her if the Oprah machine rolled to a stop? Maybe she could take some time off and smell the flowers.

Is this pure American competition? I heard that David Letterman had asked SP to be on his show, too. Sorry to hear that. Of course, she turned him down. He might play comic "hard ball," and she might not be able to keep up with him.

Oh, and then there's SP on Barbara Walters. Barbara will say this is about journalism: this is about ratings. I admire Barbara as well, but she'll play softball for the soft-brained Sarah. Oh, will she make Sarah cry? Please...and so what?

I will suggest to Americans to "Just Don't Click" on Sarah Palin. Don't watch the shows. Don't tune into her on the Internet. Don't buy her book. Don't keep feeding this media blitzkrieg that reinforces itself and her, because we keep watching and we keep clicking on people that need to be out of our consciousness. I know I've written about her here, but that's to urge her away.

Just say no to Sarah Palin. We Americans need to get our minds out of the cultural gutter and raise our sights. Our media ought to have some standards, too. Everything can't be about money. Everything can't be about the numbers. That's part of what has gotten us into this economic and societal mess that we're in now.

Oprah, Barbara Walters, David Letterman, pay attention to what and who you're promoting. Leave the trash to Fox News.

SP, for me it was her first speech, that was all one would need, she has never stopped waving her bra since.

Living proof the US is one of the stupidest places on earth.

I am actively ignoring her by clicking on link that says don't click on Sarah which is a story about Sarah from someone who read a whole lot more about Sarah than I have and also watched the Oprah show which is exactly why Oprah had her on the show.

Yes, there is some irony. But you have to spread the idea some way.

I'm not clear whether you're saying I watched the show. But I did not and will not watch that show or any other with SP on it.

I use the Just Don't Click theme on anyone I believe shouldn't be getting celebrity press coverage for any kind of stupid tricks--for anyone that is dumbing down American culture. I think I started this with someone whose initials are PH.

Again, I highly recommend this practice. When the clicks start going away, the press will stop covering them.

I am actively ignoring Sarah Palin with the utmost pride and enthusiasm. And while "actively ignoring" might be an oxymoron, I have never wanted to express my apathy more (another oxymoron).

Whatever I may think about Sarah Palin, I cannot support a call such as being made in this article. She's a private citizen and has every right to make the rounds and promote her book. If Oprah, Barbara interview her for the ratings, so what? Nothing new there. Actually, I would love to see her being interviewed by Rachel Maddow.

She may say silly things, stretch the truth, do whatever she can to remain in the spotlight. So what? I say, let her. A lot of us disagree with the things the says and stands for, but it take all types, and we can't all think alike.

Sorry, but I won't agree with trying to shut down or otherwise supress someone because I disagree with them or they talk a lot of nonsense. Leave that to the Rebublicans.

I don't like rock music. It makes absolutely no sense to me, but other people enjoy it.

"Sorry, but I won't agree with trying to shut down or otherwise supress someone because I disagree with them or they talk a lot of nonsense."

Nobody has suggested that. A boycott is among the purest expressions of both free economic markets and personal expression. Your talking point is as frivolous as Sarah Palin herself.

You don't have to tell me twice. I refuse to engage in this nonsense.

This woman should have been history the day after the 2008 presidential election. End of story.

I'm way ahead of you. But I will continue to cite Palin as the living embodiment of the nasty stupldity of the American people.

Given that it is impossible to underestimate the American people (or any other people, most likely), what ethical or aesthetic principle will guide Americans to turn off Sarah P.? We have never come up with a principle like that other than something involving either a weapon or profound sedation. The patient will just scream for more, more, and more. Sarah P. and other like her will thrive on it. So while "don't click" and "turn the channel" would work, who's going to follow that prompting? Almost no one. In fact, many people are reading what you're saying right now BECAUSE its about Sarah P.!

If we followed your advice, we would not have clicked on your essay! Also, "just say no" is what Nancy Reagan said. You know how successful that was.

I can't stand Oprah, and I am appalled at her support of Palin. I'm even more confused about Barbara Walters interviewing Palin. Isn't that reinforcing and rewarding bad behavior?

I agree with you. We must all stop watching, reading about, listening to anything about Sarah Palin. She's a shallow opportunist that is deeply troubled, insecure and unhappy. A horrible narcissist, she only cares about money, her vanity, and her overblown sense of herself. She just wants to have as many people validate her existence as possible. She wants the world to feed her ego and keep propping her up ad nauseum ad infinitum.

I'm convinced. No more clicking onto the Sarah Palin Page or any page that mentions the word Palin. Thank you!

I expected Oprah to go for the money and sensationalism but I thought Barbara Walters was smarter than this.
09:33 PM on 11/16/2009
I've been following Palin since she first emerged on the national scene. I believe that every day she gets unbiased coverage is a bad day for Republicans.
I urge every progressive to click on every article you see about her and any article you see about Levi.
If your time is limited, skip a Paris Hilton or Britney story to make room for your Palin/Johnston commitment.

I have started glossing over anything to do with SP, Lou Dobbs and the clowns at FOX. Beth is absolutely right, and I think she understands that "your energy flows where you attention goes". Regardless of whether you have negative or positive feelings toward a person, if you are giving the person your attention you are helping to keep him or her relevant.

I dont' click on any media of her book promotion. Why is Huffingtonpost giving her a BIG FREE promotion? Why is MSNBC with Matthews on Hardball talking nonsense. The man has become, not just because of his facination with her, but has become a silly fool with his "opinions" and "comments" as if his words and every other pundits carry more weight than my common sense. Chris does not get Hard on the right people, he picks on those he thinks he can get away with being sarcastic, and he never asks the right questions.

Forgot to say thank you for the post. As for Oprah, well she entertains and maybe people will see Palin as their average next door whiner giving them second thought about her ever becoming their leader. I did not see the Oprah show or the clips here.
