Green Health: 3 Easy Ways to Help Your Body and the Environment

Posted: 05/15/11 01:14 PM ET

If you're like most people, a little voice inside your head has probably been telling you for a while that it's time to get back to a more natural way of living and take a more serious look at the toxins in your everyday life. Even so, you may feel confused about the simple, practical things you can do to minimize your exposure and maximize not only your health, but your contribution to a cleaner planet.

What if I told you that making small, simple changes in your everyday routine could make a huge impact on your health and well-being, as well as the health of our planet?

Studies are coming out frequently about how everyday chemicals in our bodies are resulting in health problems like learning disabilities, autism, cancer and infertility. Often, the impact chemicals have doesn't show up for decades, like with tobacco, for example. What is also unclear is what happens inside our bodies when we come into contact with different chemicals from lots of different sources. What are the risks for us and our children? Don't wait to find out! You can do something today, right in your own home. Become aware of what goes IN you, what goes ON you, and what SURROUNDS you.

IN You: Your drinking water

If you think the water coming out of your tap is clean and health-giving ... you'd be mistaken. In 2008, an investigation by the Associated Press showed that America's tap water is contaminated with prescription and over-the-counter drugs, including antibiotics, pain medications, antidepressants and sex hormones "in significant quantities." Scientists are concerned that, even in small concentrations, these drugs could harm us over time because water is consumed in such large amounts every day. Our bodies may be able to deal with a big one-time dose of a chemical, but if a small amount is consumed continuously over years ... no one really knows what can happen to our health.

Green Tip #1:
Play it safe: Buy a water filter and fill up your own reusable metal or glass water bottles at home. Get off plastic bottles. 8 out of 10 plastic water bottles used in the U.S. become garbage or end up in a landfill, contributing to global warming.

(To check your local water quality, go to the Natural Resources Defense Council's site at www.nrdc.org and then go to "What's on Tap"? You should be able to access your community's Annual Quality Report, or you can ask your water utility company for a copy of its annual water quality report.)

ON You: Your personal care products

Most of us use at least 10 cosmetic and personal care products a day and according to the Environmental Working Group, people apply an average of 126 unique ingredients to their skin daily. No one really knows what happens in our bodies when we repeatedly expose ourselves to minute amounts of synthetic chemicals from a variety sources. Another way to absorb chemicals in our personal care products is through the mouth. When a drug like nitroglycerine is administered for a heart condition, it is given under the tongue for fast absorption. So are natural homeopathic remedies. So what happens with your toothpaste?

Green Tip #2:
Switch one thing you use most often in your bathroom. Your toothpaste, for example.
Chemicals like fluoride, saccharin, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), triclosan and acetylpyridium chloride are in there. Switch to a natural brand that doesn't contain these chemicals.

SURROUNDS You: Your household cleaners

If you've ever walked down the household-cleanser aisle at the market and your eyes began to burn or your nose became irritated, it's because common cleaning products contain chemicals that can be more dangerous than the germs themselves. Every time your children roll around on the carpet or your pets lick crumbs off the floor, they are being exposed to noxious chemicals. Don't make the assumption that if it's on the grocery shelf it's been tested and is safe. Most of us, unwittingly, buy products for our home with ingredients that are either poorly studied, not studied at all, or are known to pose potentially serious health risks. Of the roughly 17,000 chemicals found in common household products, only 3 in 10 have been tested for their effects on human health. Why? Because the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission does not require manufacturers to test household cleaning products before they appear on store shelves.

Green Tip #3:
Use hydrogen peroxide, vinegar and baking soda to clean your home. Fill one spray bottle with a 3 percent solution of hydrogen peroxide and a second one with vinegar. Spray one right after the other. Use it to wipe kill salmonella and bacteria on counter tops, appliances, and cutting boards. Do the same for the shower to kill bacteria and viruses. Use baking soda instead of commercial abrasive cleaners. Put it in a grated cheese container made of glass with a stainless steel top that has holes in it, and just sprinkle it on the surfaces and scrub.

Really? People don't already do all this stuff? I guess the fact that the markets are mostly filled with crap, I guess not. Sigh...

I appreciate all your advice here, but so much that affects our health is ingested in our diet. To truly avoid carcinogens and other harmful substances, as well as save the planet, we all need to eat vegan diets with a strong organic emphasis. Vegetarian diets still allow the consumption of eggs and cheese, which are produced in inhumane and shamefully unclean factory farms in the U.S.

Beth,
love this...have not used plastic bottles in a few years. keep reusing the same glass bottle and keep washing it out. I have saved using thousands of plastic bottle by doing this...one small step for mankind...keep your great ideas coming...

I applaud you Dianne! Most people are unaware that when they throw away a plastic bottle it goes into landfill and contributes to our global warming problem. Also, not using plastic will keep you healthier by avoiding the chemicals from the plastic -- even those labeled non-BPA -- that are leached into your drinking water.

It is not just your drinking water that you should be concerned about. A 140lb adult can absorb as much as 2 pints of water through their skin in ten minutes in the shower and contaminants absorbed with that water move directly across the cellular barrier. Infants skin is almost 10 times as absorbent as adults. In 1984 The American Journal of Public Health published a report that indicated that on VOCs alone we receive between 6 and 80 times the exposure in ten minutes in the shower through skin absorption and vapor inhalation than if we drank eight glasses of the same water. (The role of skin absorption as a route of exposure for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking water. H S Brown, D R Bishop and C A Rowan. American Journal of Public Health, Vol. 74, Issue 5 479-484, Copyright © 1984 by American Public Health Association).
Shower head filtering or point of entry filtering like a LifeSource system is the answer.

Unfortunately no water filter has yet been shown capable of removing pharmaceuticals from water, plenty of claims out there but no lab testing. A good quality pharmaceutical grade granular activated carbon (carbon suitable to be given by oral ingestion for poison adsorption prior to stomach pumping in cases of accidental/deliberate ingestion of harmful material nothing to do with its ability to deal with drug residues) filter may be able to deal with this issue but have yet to be adequately tested.

Thanks for that information on absorbing toxins in the shower. Taking a bath has the same problems. Adding 1 teaspoon of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid powder) to the bathwater will neutralize chlorine but I'm guessing will not touch the VOCs in the water. A whole house water filter is ideal.

Great article! Can attest to the baking soda...it's terrific for pet accidents too.

Now, we just need to stop our children from ingesting those pesky chemicals including food dyes, colorings, additives, preservatives, naturally and artificially occurring growth hormones...antibiotics...and that's just breakfast.

p.s. Will be checking out your web page since it seems we have much in common.

Also avoid drinking water that has added fluoride chemicals. Modern science indicates that ingesting fluoride is ineffective at reducing tooth decay and harmful to health.

Glimpse inside a phosphate fertilizer plant where fluoridation chemicals
(fluorosilicates) are created, workers are expendable, laws are broken and officials turn a blind eye.

Great article Beth. Increasing our personal responsibilities in all aspects of our lives is imperative. Let’s not forget the importance of cleaning up our bodies as we clean up our foods, water and surroundings. Many of us have taken positive steps towards our physical maintenance by choosing hosts of vitamins and supplements that they take daily. Natural remedies certainly outweigh the unnatural ones in the long run but are we sure about what we’re taking and why?? Are we contributing to the toxic output accumulating in our environments by the overconsumption of vitamins, minerals, herbs and supplements? We will want to consider that inappropriate amounts of “natural” remedies may result in inappropriate internal responses, increased “achey-breakies” and ultimately, more waste!

You make a great point Dr. Gloria. And people shouldn't assume that the vitamins they are buying are all that healthy. According to the Organic Consumers Assoc. 90% or more of the vitamins and supplements now on the market labeled as "natural" or "food based" are spiked with synthetic chemicals.

Good suggestions for all of us. I wish that more so called "green" advocates would be more helpful, like in this column, then those that are extremists that continue to push for more and more government intervention to."force" their environmental feelings onto everybody, especially when they may have huge negative collateral effects on our way of life, and are based on suspect scientific baselines. The USA is the "cleanest and safest" country from an environmental perspective then any other industrialized country in the world and sets the standard for other countries, and that is good, but we have to be pragmatic and practical and not zealots about our environmental and energy policies.

Excellent article Beth. Much of what you write about I already follow. Products such as distilled vinegar was what my mother used as a cleaning solution for years. Does great on windows too. Here's a hard one.....hair dye ! I don't dye my hair but so many of my friends do and no matter what I say regarding it's toxicity and health hazards, they can't bear the idea of going grey. Any suggestions?
Thank you. Diane

Hi Diane,
Hair dye is a tough one. There are some great products from Europe that are non-toxic and contain no ammonia. You need to find a salon who uses it or request that your current salon offer it to its clients. Many will be hesitant to try a new product. The salon I use, Elements, in Mill Valley, CA, has a great, safe hair color product from Italy.

Also check out Herbatint. I buy it at the whole foods/natural food store. It doesn't have ammonia in it. I doubt it's perfect, but it's a big step up from the stuff in the salons and grocery stores.

I have dark hair and it covers grey fantastically.
