An exhibition of new paintings by Mary Weatherford. Weatherford lives in Los Angeles but has been visiting Bakersfield since October. Recently, she has been living in Bakersfield full time to work on this exhibition, and the works in it come from her understanding of this particular site. On view through March 10, 2012.

My Barbarian's Broke People's Baroque Peoples' Theater

A residency in the form of a gallery installation that includes new videos, sculptures, and a performance environment by the group My Barbarian. The project highlights the paradoxes of an art practice founded in critique, which nonetheless relies on economic forces that are worthy of serious criticism. The installation will also serve as a venue for related screenings, events, and performances. On view through March 11, 2012.

Last Chance: Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974-1981 and Theaster Gates: An Epitaph for Civil Rights

Monday, February 13 is the closing day of two exhibitions at MOCA. Under the Big Black Sun features more than 130 artists working in an array of mediums and styles and addresses the period in American art when modernism reached its end and a multiplicity of movements, forms, and genres began to take shape. An Epitaph for Civil Rights presents mixed-media sculptures and installation works by Chicago-based artist and urban planner Theaster Gates. Gates uses a Black non-aesthetic to explore urban blight and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's campaign in 1963 when demonstrators were violently hazed by the county's police and fire departments.

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of John Cage's birth, REDCAT hosts two nights of rarely played music -- some of which is performed for the first time in L.A. Featuring The New Century Players, the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts' professional new music ensemble, the CalArts orchestra, and more. Each night will have different programming.
