Why Caine's Arcade is the Best. Thing. Ever. (VIDEO)

Posted: 04/10/2012 4:49 pm

Just when you were getting worried that "there's an app for that" was taking over the world, a lovely, charming, inventive and awesomely wonderful video comes flying into the digital stream.

If you haven't seen "Caine's Arcade" yet, stop reading this blog post and WATCH IT. It's the best 10 minutes of your life.

The simple description is "a 9-year-old boy builds an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad's used auto part store and has the best day of his life."

The bigger picture is why discovery and amplification are two of the most intriguing elements of social web. Yes, it's always fun to be out in the real world and just 'happen' across something you weren't expecting -- a recipe book, an antique chair, your favorite flowers in Spring, a puppy up for adoption.

Evidently, that's how Nirvan Mullick discovered Caine's Arcade -- he just happened upon it. What he did from there demonstrates the power of social media... the flashmob, Reddit, and the rest that the film chronicles.

Today the story is trending on Twitter and the video has gone viral. Caine's full story is at the Caine's Arcade website and donations are even being taken for a scholarship fund to benefit Caine's education.

I was so moved that I tweeted Nirvan to invite him to speak to the social media marketing class I teach at UCLA Extension with Karl Kasca. I hope he says yes. Whatever happens, I'll be heading out to East Los Angeles soon to visit Caine's Arcade in person.

And, yes, I'm buying a FUN PASS. Life is sweet.

This video is the feel good story of the year. It has great social marketing, but I would imagine one couldn't make just any topic go viral like this. Am I right or wrong? This is a special story about a special boy.

I very much agree. CONTENT is king....and in this case the actual STORY is so compelling we can't help but love it. Social makes it available to everyone. It's the distribution platform that was missing in the past to allow all of us to share in this great story. :)

Total winning. And what I think LOTS of praise for the father. He was magnificent and such a kind fellow. And of course, the people of LA, who LITTLE BY LITTLE have become some of the nicest around and begun to tear down the idea everyone here is a selfish and mean person. PROOF that is not the case. Everyday.

I grew up surrounded by cardboard boxes. I made a robot out of them when I was 9 after watching Start Wars using and Electro Set and an skateboard. EVERY christimas the toy store below my house would dump hudred of shipping boxes we quickly snatched and turned into "forts", "spaceships", medival armor...even "crash zones" against which ram our bikes.

It made me a bit teary eyed about those days, wishing so much I was back there, with my bloddied knee, my dirty hands and all my friends.. And it also made me sad my boy -whom I had no custoty of- never got to experience that. The most we ever did was build a bottle caps and rubber bands piball machine...but his family on his mother's side filled him with Nintendos, videos and crap.

Get into it if you have kids.

I give this dad a lot of credit also. He did a far better thing by letting Caine use what was available than pacifying him. As kids we played with what was at hand and our parents nurtured us. There was little coddling. Find something to do or I'll find something for you, lol. Everything they did was explained and willing little helpers we were and when we blossomed we could do all sorts of things and had tons of fun while learning to do them. Toss a kid a gameboy and that's it today. Kids don't even know how to use a table napkin these days, muchless a tape gun.

It's a great story. And the grin on that kids face during the closing credits makes watching worthwhile.
