The Internet, As Seen By High Schoolers

Posted: 01/09/2013 7:08 pm

Kids these days. Just what are they up to online?

Intrigued by one tenth-grader's musings (via her brother) on trends in the tech world, investor Garry Tan conducted an informal survey of how 1,000 teens and twenty-somethings are using social media.

Among the high-schoolers (aged 13 to 18) and millennials (aged 19 to 25) that answered Tan's survey, Tumblr > Facebook > Twitter > Instagram > Snapchat, in terms of popularity.

Because "teens love photos, but they hate text," in the words of FWD's John Herrman, here's a picture of the survey results:

social media use teens

Teens used every single social site more than their older peers, and Snapchat and Instagram were nearly twice as popular among high-schoolers than millennials. Thirteen percent of teens reported using Snapchat regularly, while just 4 percent of twenty-somethings did so. Twenty-one percent of users in the younger demographic use Instagram, versus 11 percent in the older demographic.

The survey points to the graying of Facebook: more high-schoolers and millennials are using Tumblr than Facebook (59 percent versus 54 percent). By comparison, just 5 percent of online adults are using Tumblr, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

Tan's survey jives with comScore data from May of last year. Together, Facebook and Tumblr accounted for 90 percent of the time teens spent online.

Middle aged, but found the Tumblr Occupy Wall Street section.. Enlightening archive of photos of people holding up mostly hand-written pages with their stories of living as the 99% in the USA. There must be thousands in the archive by now. check it out and add to it.

What the heck is Tumblr? And while we're at it, why does dropping one letter denote "high tech"? Does it make it quicker to text or something?
God, Im old.

Tumblr is a type of blogging service that you can post text, pictures, videos, sound clips and links to. You can follow other people's Tumblrs and reblog (repost) what they post.

NO NO NO , I am a Liberal Dem and do not own a g u n , with that said I find this horrible that under President Obama this administration is being forced by the left wing of our party to take this on. Really, this issue have been going around for decades and nothing gets done except making the rich and powerful NRA and g u n manufacturers rich and this topic hurst the Democratic party!!!!
No backround check would of prevented most of these masaquers/murders! Also since when is our medical records which I hope includes mental health become a public access issue??????
Heck half of Americans are on some type of anti depressants !!!!! Where do we draw the line??? What do you think if you have a son or daughter dealing with mental issues? Are these records going to become public???? The mother of the shooter was completely irresponsible for many things, taking her son to a shooting range knowing full well he was extremely mentally ill. How did he have access to this amount of fire arm??? Why weren't these gun under a special lock where only she had access to them???

Marc Prensky coined the names "Digital Native" and "Digital Immigrant" about a decade ago. The former grew up in the digital environment, and latter--for various reasons such as age, geography, etc.--had to learn to adapt. It's a new world in which young folks, the natives, are far more comfortable, but which offers its own set of challenges--the principal ones, privacy and security.

Please change the headline. This is not the 'internet' as seen by teenagers. It is 'social media' as seen by a very small subset of teenagers. The 'internet' as seen by teenagers is probably just as much video and music as it is social media.

The "facts" about what teens are and think had always come from the progeny of Hollywood weirdos. You can look at old movies or old pictures and the picture will show what people actually wore not the Hollywood movies.

This is nothing new. In my day we had LiveJournal, and it was filled with angsty kids with emotional problems. Didn't take long before they realized that their content really sucked, so they migrated to facebook where whatever anger they felt towards the world had to be contained within the brevity of a status update. Nowadays, primarily Russians use it.

In all seriousness though, tumblr is pretty cool, but some of the content is truly terrible.

My daughter (in her early 20's) uses Tumblr and likes it...she calls it a 'blogging platform." After reading this article on HP, I ran a tumblr search for Janis Joplin (I'm a huge fan; almost to the point of obsession.) I was pleasantly surprised to see a few pictures I had NEVER seen before (and I have hundreds of the Queen of Blues-Rock) as well as links to some great articles.

It is definitely a visual site, and very enjoyable. Snapshot is something I've never used, but by the end of the day, I intend to explore...

So funny! I am a Janis fan and did the exact same thing yesterday! I saw a bunch of photos that I'd never seen of her before, and I have hundreds of photos of her! Rock on!

Her 70th birthday is January 19th...nice to meet a fellow fan! (Did you ever see the play "Love, Janis"? produced by her sister and brother? I caught it 11 years ago in the Village...outstanding!)

I never understood the appeal of Tumblr. To me, it's just an endless, scrolling locker door. You remember how in high school people would stick pictures of their favourite bands and lyrics from their favorite songs on the inside of their locker door? Yeah, an electronic version of that. If you are not a blogger or artist yourself, I don't see why you'd need tumblr beyond high school. But maybe it's just me. As a wise old man once said: "I'm 'with it', but what I'm with isn't 'it' anymore."

As a Tumblr user, it actually offers a ton more than just pictures (although that's all I thought it was at first too) - you can make video, text or picture posts. Likewise, you can make sub-accounts (for instance, I have my main Tumblr and then attached to it I have one for politics). At first, it seems very blank and simplistic, but when you look deeper into it, the personalization is endless.

If you are looking for blogging - making journal entries or articles about topics - it's stupendous. Not only does it allow you to tag your material - making it easier for people to search just your Tumblr for certain articles or even all of Tumblr - but it enables your information to be spread quickly. Rather than having to copy and paste an entire jounral entry you agree with or just posting a quote from it or a URL (like we all used to have to do with LJ), you can literally just reblog the entire article and post your comment below.

It's really awesome!

Thanks for you comment. I maybe just didn't have the patience to explore its possibilities. I'm quite happy with posting a link and/or a comment like I do on facebook. But I guess if I wanted a more permanent record of what I put out there i could consider using Tumblr. I often post things on a couple of specific political topics and having and it might be useful to see it all in one place and have a search function, even if it is just for my own future reference.
Hmmm, maybe I'll give it another go...
