On September 11 George Bush contrived with Democratic assistance to send David Petraeus and Ryan Crocker to tell Congress how the Iraq war is going.
Bush wanted the date not because he thought it would be, in Lincoln's words, an altogether fitting and proper way to honor the fallen, but because he thought it a clever way to reinforce a lie he has been caught in many times -- that his war was an answer to that attack.
While Petraeus and Crocker pitched Congress, General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, used a Pentagon memorial service to peddle the same line: we avenge the innocent by waging war in a country unconnected to their tragedy. It's all in keeping with a long held administration belief that it is unpatriotic for anyone else to politicize 9/11.
Petraeus, Crocker and Pace took a page from Karl Rove's White House Iraq Group playbook: Craft sentences that imply more than they say. Deliver them with conviction. When found out, reveal the artful parsing that proves you never said what everyone heard.
It always worked better than it should. We believed Saddam was behind 9/11; that he had weapons of mass destruction; that his oil would pay for Bush's war; that Iraq wanted to be just like us; that the mission was accomplished, resistance in its last throes.
To make it work Bush counts on us not to read any more than he does. Petraeus and Crocker's tales of progress contradicted the published findings of military and intelligence professionals across the administration and in Congress:
A 2006 National Intelligence Estimate, a report of the consensus views of all intelligence agencies, said flatly that the Iraq War undermines the war on terror. It warned that the worst threat we now face is from "dispersed, self radicalizing" terror cells that are almost impossible to engage, let alone defeat, in pitched battles.
A report of the non partisan Government Accountability Office gave Iraq passing grades on just 3 of 18 'benchmarks'. General Petraeus awarded passing grades on 9, a hell of a curve by any standard. GAO staff leaked their report early to ensure that it and not some watered down facsimile got to the public.
A 14 member mission led by Retired General James Jones, former head of NATO, unanimously concluded that Iraqi's security forces are a disaster. When polled, a substantial majority of Iraqis voice their agreement.
Don't trust anything our government says? Check out the official Iraqi tabulations of sectarian killings, according to which Petraeus' claim of a 55% drop is utterly false.
Petraeus touted success in Baghdad and Anbar Province. In Baghdad, Shiites simply drove Sunnis out. If one side finishes the other off, casualty rates drop but it's not what you or I mean by progress.
In Anbar, locals came together to snuff out a home grown strain of Al Qaeda that sprouted up after we invaded. It would appear its prospects of finding safe haven in Iraq are dimmer than Bush lets on. This isn't a small point.
Bush says early withdrawal will mean a bloodbath. (If only he'd thought this much about casualties before going in.) Baghdad and Anbar suggest hanging around forever isn't the best way to avoid one.
What Baghdad shows is how well and how quickly a partition of Iraq might work. Anbar proves Al Qaeda isn't the worst threat to Iraq, which doesn't need 100,000 American troops to deal with it. In a reasoned and informed debate these two "success stories" would be seen for what they are-- two more arguments for getting out.
On Thursday Bush asked support for "General Petraeus's strategy." He seemed to promise troop cuts but really said only that with luck the 'surge' might end by July, 2008. After that, 130,000 troops -- Rumsfeld's original force -- will fight on into someone else's presidency.
In the Senate, John Warner asked Petraeus if the war is making America safer. Petraeus squirmed, as if haunted by the ghost of Colin Powell at the UN. Petraeus generally ducked big questions, confining himself when he could to the merely tactical. He hopes we'll remember the strategy as Bush's.
Just before the 2004 election, Petraeus wrote a Washington Post piece informing voters that things in Iraq were really turning around. His optimism then puts his testimony now in context. Maybe things were going even better then -- or maybe his willingness to carry political water for Bush is what got him his present job.
The administration wouldn't feel it had wrung all the propaganda potential from the 9/11 anniversary without at least one attack on the war's critics. Actually there were many but the one that took the spotlight was the attack on MoveOn.org.
MoveOn's play on Petraeus' name -- general betray us -- was puerile. When will liberals learn how to talk to people not already in agreement with them? Still, if Americans read more they'd know MoveOn got its facts right. Petraeus didn't even try. It may not be treason to lie about a war, but the real patriot is almost always the one telling the truth.
This is Petraeus' first combat. He led the failed effort to train Iraqi security forces. He got the top job due to his one proven skill, talking to Congressmen. Today he's a Republican kitchen saint but when the truth catches up with him he'll look like George Tenet, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and everyone else who disgraced themselves lying for Bush.
Before Bush's speech, a leader of our new Anbar coalition was murdered. Worse yet, Iraqi Kurds, till now our only true allies in country, undercut the vital effort to divide Iraq's oil revenues among its three major factions. This they did by cutting their own deal with Hunt Oil of Texas.
Hunt's president, Ray Hunt is a close Bush ally and member of his Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. Did Bush green-light this prolonging of Iraq's chaos while asking our troops to prolong their sacrifice? If he did he betrayed his alleged mission and our troops and we need to know it.
Our democracy grows weak. Before the war Bush had to hide findings of government experts showing Iraq's nuclear program was peaceful. Now government hides reports in plain sight of a public that can't be bothered to read them.
In New York last week, families of the dead wept as the names were read aloud. At night, a "tribute in light" shot columns from 44 search lights up into the night from Ground Zero. The effect is of a ghostly specter of the twin towers. People are said to find it comforting. Better to honor our democracy and our dead with the truth.

It is now more than 70% of the nation knows GW BUSH is a pitiful liar, a crook, and has murdered over a million people, all in the name of oil.
We still have the ignorant 30% that believe he is a man of God, but that is only the Devil's perception.
He has brought this country to its knees and the rest of the world is witness to this...God help us.
"We still have the ignorant 30% that believe he is a man of God, but that is only the Devil's perception."
HELLO, I don't know WHERE you get your figures from, you should back them up with some thing called PROOF and FACTS. I am one of those people you have determined is 30 percent of the Country.
I always shudder when a person brings G_D and the devil into a statement, especially in the same sentence.
An alarm goes off in my head, it sounds like this, "kook-kook-kook!"
Actually, George W. Bush, is NOT a liar, a crook or a murder. He is the President of the United States of America. A thankless job, a dangerous job and a HIGHLY stressful job, with a great deal of responsibility.
It is a job that most people who criticize him for, could not possibly do themselves.
He deserves a certain amount of respect, for doing the job, just like any one else who does a job and sticks with it, no matter how stressful it is.
If you want to look at liars, crooks and murders, why don't you look around the World and NOT just use your tunnel vision to look at the President of the United States of America?
Come on, give it a try, look at Darfur first.
Salient points, however prepare yourself for what follows. The 'progressives' are not interested in fairplay.
First, it is Bu$h himself who brings God into the argument, claiming God told him to invade Iraq. And he is a crook and liar and murderer. Be sure and ask your God about that when you see him. Dante would have him roasting for sure.
He cooked the books on WMD, he's lied about Saddam and 9/11 (and continues to try eliding the two despite the fact that the present iinsurgents into Iraq come from Saudi Arabia, as did the 9/11 hijackers, than Iran). He's lied about torture, about the secret prisons. He's lied about spying on his own people. Wake up before he declares himself "president for life." Will you believe the critics then?
What that a parody of a head-in-sand Bush backer? Well done, much applause! Will you be here all week?
Hey everybody, let's give this person some examples; here's my take:
To site JUST ONE example where this POTUS was a liar in front of all America and the world, let's take probably the most-spinned -by -the -rightwing FACT we have to date; State Of The Union Speech, 2003, where Bush stated Saddam was purchasing "yellow cake" uranium in order to make "Nucular" weapons.. Not true. Not having the correct intel is NO EXCUSE when youre the POTUS. Cut through the crap- if it's not the truth, it's a LIE.
So when an agent disputes this in the media after trying normal chanells to bring this up forthrightly and has the door slammed in his face, he is attacked, and attacked viciously by the minions under this what you so seem to esteem "brave and noble" leader, even to the point of attacking his family and outing an American CIA clandestine agent (You will probably argue her worth like all the other rightwing cowards, if not, you're really special-) in an absolutely traitorious fashion. Really noble. What a rancid, stinking disgraceful example of leadership.
If I was any sort of CEO, Rotary Club president, MUCH LESS POTUS, I would be absolutely ashamed based on my own personal level of integrity to be associated with such cowards. But obviously, he felt so self righteous as to pardon the poor jerk caught in the crosshairs covering up for him and his VP. I'm sure you're really proud. I'm not. The great majority of Americans are not. We're sick of his lies. He IS a damn LIAR.
Next!
You have the blood of 3,787 Americans on your hands. How does it feel?
I think you all may have something here. Most Americans are stupid per the first few commentors. So if 70% hate Bush and let's say 70% are stupid, ignorant, uninterested and uneducated, that makes the case for the 30% that believe Bush. I am still waiting fior someone to tell me when Bush LIED!!!!!! WHEN AND WHERE?????? I want quotes along with the definition of lies.
I admire your guts, but you have no idea what is about to be unleashed. You may be correct, however 'progressives' do not want to read about it, good luck.
Why I'm doing this I can't be sure, as I seriously doubt you will accept anything short of direct proof personally observed by you, which is of course impossible, assuming you do not hve access to the President. So, aside from how easy it is to find lies by simply using Google, here's a link:

And another:

http://whatreallyhappened.com/bushlie.html
That's a link the video. Seeing a liar is believing.
Check out Bush's story of seeing the first plane crash into the WTC BEFORE going into the classroom. Big problem there. No one saw the first plane crash. There was no video of it that day.
TeddySalad;
You should make that "ACTUAL QUOTES," because some of these people fabricate their quotes.
TEDDY,
ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE!
Take a look at this:

Before you print it, be aware it's FAR more than the 39 pages it was when I printed it over a year ago.
Definition: A "lie" is an untruth.
Thanks, baylaw.
I'm saving these links.
Not to mention the fact that these same capitalists try to regulate all morality that doesn't interfere with their God of unregulated greed. I speak of their old rant against rappers and homosexuals. But they will not seek to regulate areas where they are making billions! Such as violence on T.V., movies that capitalize on the subjugation of females to their domination and gratification! The rape of the Planet..., the rape of little girls and boys. Yes, there is no shortage of sickness in this society. That is what Nikita Kruschev was referring to when he said the U.S. will fall from within. It eventually will befall all countries. The restrictivr Muslim regimes are aware of this tendency for some men to not control themselves, but they are punishing the victims of their own lust and sickness! It is all related to this dumbing down in this countries forced choices of "leadership" choke! Criminals!
WOW, That is out of left field. I haven't the slightest idea of what you said or why you said it, but I applaud your right to say it. :)
Now isn't this better than everyone in lock-step? Some real meat for you liberal-left- progressive, whatever you are calling youselves these days, to rip apart. Your Welcome.
I found it disgusting that Bush would go to his usual 9/11 for his lies.
However, the people of the United States and the Congress continue to permit this imbecile and his corrupt and vile administration to do whatever he wants. The military continues to follow him over the abyss.
This was once such a great country, and now we are teetering on the fall, just like the Roman Empire, and Bush is Nero.
The dual beams eminating from Ground Zero on 9/11 should be seen for what they are - the perfect metaphor for Bush's 'War on Terror'.
Just a trick of the light.
Yes and Congress still fiddlin.....
not to nit-pick, but the roman empire did not fall with Nero. He was actually one of the early emporors. The empire went on for hundreds of years more. Nero was just a spectacularly bad emporor if you were a regular citizen. If you were one of his rich cronies it was a great time.
"On September 11 George Bush contrived to send David Petraeus and Ryan Crocker to tell Congress how the Iraq war is going."
I think if you google around, you'll find all sides agree that Congressional Democrats set the date that Patraeus was required to appear before them. The timing was was discussed at great length before the testimony.
Congress mandated he testify before September 15th and a packed schedule and the Rosh Hashanah holiday forced this particular date on them. It was Carl Levin's call, actually.
Strick--I don't buy your info. Sounds like you troll talk.
Please do not confuse the libs with what actually occured. They need to believe 'their' version of events to sleep at night. They love spin, er I mean 'state' the facts every chance the can, good luck.
You are correct. The abuse will start immediately. I'm amazed at the hatred. I have firsthand evidence of our success in Iraq and our continued progress in winning the peace. It is a shame that there is no listening. I still haven't seen anyone show me a lie that President Bush has stated.
I await the accusations of delusion....
We LIBs LOVE THAT SPIN...
"...Insurgency in its last throes..."
"...Mission Accomplished..."
"...We'll be welcomed as LIBERATORS..."
"...OIL revenue will PAY for the war and reconstruction..."
"...We know just where the WMD are...area above Tikrit..."
And so on.
YOU IDIOTS have had FULL POWER for over 6 years - yep, you did it 'Your Way'.
So how's that war working out for you?!????
WHO WILL BE THE LAST AMERICAN TO DIE IN IRAQ?
Great collumn.
Thanks, so much. Many of us who strive to get our points in, not out of any ego or reflective gratification, are simply striving to uncover and protect the truth... We're so sick of the rank, putrid, stinking lies brought on in droves by this corrupt administration.
That's really, for one, what I'm all about. I abhor the lies. If this president and all he stands for wasn't such a total and complete lie, I probably wouldn't even frequent this blog.
Because of this, seeing someone who stands the truth as a pillar like you're doing is damn inspiring and refreshing. Sure wish more journalists and writers would stand it up as complete and deliberate as this.
You miss a very big point in your post. Namely, why we MUST STAY in Iraq. The reason that the US must remain in Iraq is this:
More must die so that those who have already died will not have died in vain.
I mean it's as clear as crystal. We cannot leave Iraq until all our soldiers are dead so they will not have died in vain. Got that? Good.
hopeless I was so fu##ing confused till I read your post
And the echoes of Vietnam ring on... Sigh.
Yep, nothing honors the dead like dying. Seems like Iraqi's and Afghani's honor their dead way more than we honor ours. That's them darn Arabs and Muslims for ya'. So come on, Amurikans! Kick it up a notch! Let's show a little honor here!
As ol' Rudyard Kipling said:
When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Well put.
IT IS SOPHYSTRY AT ITS WORST! HOW CAN ANYONE THINK SUCH HORRIBLE THOUGHTS?
BRING THE TROOPS HOME... NOW!
"Our democracy grows weak."
In the absence of an educated knowledgeable citizenry democracy will become weak and will eventually fall. This post points to the root cause of this weakening, a public that is both under-educated and disinterested. It takes both basic education and responsible interest to ferret out the relevant truths.
The Republicans know this. "Crafting sentences that imply more than they say and delivering them with conviction" has become the Republican srt form of absurdity. The cowboy smile and bravado that allows the President and his supporters to continue to steer the debate and the artful wrapping of their propaganda in the symbols of patriotism seem more like a scene from Fellini than reality. Still, it works.
The sad part of all of this is that the Democrats in Congress and the entire lot of presidential candidates are playing the part of the foil character to Bush. His language and his strategy to pass this failure into the next Democratic presidency and seal its abysmal fate will work because neither they nor the public seek the truth.
nat,
THE BIG LIE (Part 1)
I find it amazing that the White House website contains a minimum of 930 documents (“minimum” due to limitations in the search criteria) that contain both "IRAQ" AND "9/11", but that Mr. Bush NEVER said there was a connection between the two (unless in VERY recent documents since Mr. Bush “recanted” his “error”.).
http://www.whitehouse.gov/query.html?col=colpics&op0=%2B&fl0=&ty0=w&tx0=9%2F11&op1=%2B&fl1=&ty1=w&tx1=iraq&op2=%2B&fl2=keywords%3A&ty2=p&tx2=&op3=%2B&fl3=document.type%3A&ty3=p&tx3=&dt=an&inthe=604800&ady=13&amo=9&ayr=2007&bdy=20&bmo=9&byr=2007&nh=10&rf=0&lk=1&ht=0&qp=&qt=&qs=&qc=&pw=630&la=en&qm=0&st=1&rq=0&si=0&ql=a&text=0
What are the odds that ALL these documents NEVER say that there WAS a connection, yet NONE of them say there WASN’T a connection?
What are the mathematical probabilities of that happening by accident? (As neo-cons will insist. Just wait.)
And why do I ask?
The number of Americans believing in the erroneous connection increased approximately FIVE FOLD in the months following 9/11/01. But we’re to believe the Bush cabal had NOTHING to do with that astronomical growth in the IGNORANCE of the American populace? And that they had NO knowledge, and therefore made NO attempts to correct this obvious and DANGEROUS error?
FACT: Mr. Bush KNEW the American public was wrong in this belief. How do we know this? If by no other means, “Dead Certain” has informed us that Mr. Bush DOES read newspapers, and therefore he LIES when he publicly states that he does not.
Regardless, he has an entire staff tasked with informing him of the “realities” of the outside world. To say that Mr. Bush (or Cheney) did not know they were SUCCESSFUL in their calculated attempts to create and perpetuate this MYTH is as naïve a statement as I’ve heard in my fifty years on this earth.
Bill, I think liars against Bush are as despicable as any other lie.
I respect and honor Petreaus, I don't believe he lied....but there sure are a lot of people spinning and lying about him. Which is why 6 years on the liars still haven't stopped the war....all their anti war lies, smearing, and propaganda have consistently undermined the lefts true goal.
The anti war movement has been so badly handling this issue you would think that HATE, LYING, SMEARING, and SPINNING was the goal of the anti war left instead of stopping a war.
If the "loyal opposition" could first grow some basic, decent, honest morals and debate rather than rant, use truth rather than lies, engage rather than smear, facts not spin, they might have turned this thing around 3 years ago rather than looking at it going on into the first administration of the next administration.
THE BIG LIE (Part 2)
And how did this LIE begin? PERHAPS in statements like:
2/13/02 (bush)
“But make no mistake about it, if we need to, we will take necessary action to defend the American people.
And I think that statement was clear enough for Iraq to hear me. And I will reserve whatever options I have, I'll keep them close to my vest. President -- or Saddam Hussein needs to understand I'm serious about defending our country.”
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/02/20020213-3.html
8/26/02 (cheney)
“In the face of such a threat, we must proceed with care, deliberation, and consultation with our allies. I know our president very well. I've worked beside him as he directed our response to the events of 9/11. I know that he will proceed cautiously and deliberately to consider all possible options to deal with the threat that an Iraq ruled by Saddam Hussein represents.”
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/08/20020826.html
8/29/02 (Cheney)
“As former Secretary of State Kissinger recently stated: "The imminence of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the huge dangers it involves, the rejection of a viable inspection system, and the demonstrated hostility of Saddam Hussein combine to produce an imperative for preemptive action." If the United States could have preempted 9/11, we would have, no question. Should we be able to prevent another, much more devastating attack, we will, no question. This nation will not live at the mercy of terrorists or terror regimes.”
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/08/20020829-5.html
These excerpts CONFIRM a calculated effort not only to CONCEAL the truth from the American people (and the world), but to carefully, deliberately GUIDE them along the path toward ignorance.
If anyone other than myself had been wondering how this “misunderstanding” began, we’ve all just stopped wondering.
Haven’t we?
I ONLY ACCEPTED ATTACKING AFGHANISTAN IN THE EFFORT OF GETTING BIN LADEN AND... CASTIGATINF THE TALIBAN FOR HARBORING HIM AND HIS TERRORISTS... YET, BIN LADEN WAS ALLOWED TO GET FREE AND THE TROOPS DEBILITATED BY GOING INTO IRAQ...I NEVER ACCEPTED THE IRAQ LIES... THE POTUS MUST SOMETIME REALIZE THE TERRIBLE, HENIOUS AND HORRIBLE INJUSTICE HE AS BROUGHT UPON OUR FORCES AND THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ...IT IS SAD; BUT MAKES ME VERY ANGRY...
THE BIG LIE (Part 3)
So, what are the odds that ALL these documents NEVER say that there WAS a connection, nor do any of them say there WASN’T a connection?
Pretty DAMN good, when the intent is to mislead and deceive an nation already in SHOCK. For those of us who saw the short “The Shock Doctrine” by Naomi Klein this past week, this all makes PERFECT sense. (The rest of you absolutely MUST see this incredibly disturbing short. PLEASE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kieyjfZDUIc)
Send a nation into shock, then manipulate them at will while they’re in a weakened state. What more criminal, negligent or reprehensible act has EVER been so carefully DESIGNED to harm the American people so drastically in the entire history of this great nation?
The DIRECT result of this lie is no mystery to anyone. WAR, deaths of approximately 5,000 Americans (including contractors), well over 30,000 injured, a world in confusion and fear, a nation of innocent people in uproar (and death), a HALF TRILLION DOLLARS wasted.
And military stocks gone through the roof. (Blackwater, like the myth, nearly five-fold increase.)
And this is JUST the beginning.
And NOW you know why and how and when it all began.
Thank you for listening, nat.
The Authorization to Use Military Force in Iraq (MILF) (Oct 2002) mentions 9/11 many times. It also requires the president to seek and obtain U.N. authorization for the invasion, which Bush never did. It's time for Democrat leaders to read something they signed and come forward and confess that they've never actually read it before, even though it sent this country to war.
The new "approval" ratings for Congress: 19% (cf. Hitler 22%, Satan 24%, O.J. 38%, anal sex 41%) call for a constitutional convention, or a revolution. More likely, as Bill Curry suggests, a funeral for the U.S. of A.
nat, (and others),
I've submitted well over a thousand comments, but my text editor, Word for Windows, has never TRASHED " or ' before (as well as random other characters.)
PLEASE try to read through the mess. It didn't show up until the comments were already submitted and the screen refreshed.
These comments may be important. I've done lots of research on this issue. Please don't let the loss of a very small % of characters be the excuse the neo-cons are hoping for.
Thanks, all.
Thanks for your efforts and the great links Nat. I appreciate your thouroughness above all...something I just don't have the time for (I can only visit HuffPo on my lunch break :( ).
I won't argue your point that what has occurred over the past 7 years is not accidental. Anyone bothering to read about Neoconservatism and the PNAC should become enlightened as to the deliberateness of what has occurred after 9/11. And while I disagree with your assessment of Bush's ignorance (the man has the IQ of a noodle), I can't say the same thing for those who advise him, and, tell him what to think and say. They knew very well what they were doing.
As long as a we're examining the fact that the Bush administration lied its way into our present situation, deceived the American people (and Congress), and now ignores voters perhaps we ought to ask ourselves why they are doing this?
Many erudite people have expressed conspiracy fears and I have written briefly about some of these concerns on this web site. I won't repeat what I've already said but I have to saythat if Bush & Company have the best interests of America at heart than I'll be surprised. In my opinion, the end game for these people, the reason for the current debacle, is to weaken America because the US is the only country capable of halting the creation of a new order based on Neofascism. An order where most of us are expendable and viewed as little better than cattle. Every policy supported by Neoconservatives, domestic or foreign, points in this direction. These people tend to think long term and I don't believe in coincidences or that such an elaborate drama could be accidental. However, I hope I'm wrong.
Note to native1; Amen.
About the line "Crafting sentences..." It's called sophistry; it was a hallmark of the end of the so-called Classical Greek society.
It didn't matter what was said,as long as it sounded good. Honesty was irrelevant, fact was mutable. Soaring phrases and lofty rhetoric were the order of the day.
The Romans took advantage of the spinal/moral disintegration of the Greeks and also took over the country. So who would be our modern world opportunists?
