New Rule: In honor of daylight savings time, Republican candidates must say whether or not they believe the days getting shorter proves that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

I've tried to be patient. I've spent time metaphorically holding the hands of my conservative friends as I walk them through the logical inconsistencies in their support of a GOP that has betrayed them, an administration that treats them like an exploitable natural resource. I've demonstrated that, while gutless and disorganized and frequently corrupt and venal, the democrats have never been more clearly the lesser of two evils and that's the best we will ever be able to milk from out One-and-a-half-Party system.

And my conservative friends would become silent and leave me with all the outward signs of having become thoughtful.

And then the next week they come back to me bouyed by the news that "we've turned the corner", or "they're in the last throes" or "fatalities were lower in Afghanistan than anyone expected and "the Taliban haven't taken back nearly as much territory as analysts thought they would".

So I've given up on my poor conservative friends. Not because I don't love and admire them, but because I'm not a psychiatrist, and conservatism in America today isn't a political or philosophical position today, it's a mental health issue.

Believing in the Republican party and God means that you can bind and torture women and still go to heaven, as long you ask God to forgive you for your sins.
Believing in the conservative party and God means you can deny children government funded healthcare in America just as long as you donate a fraction of your billionaire income to the church every year (for a tax deduction).
Believing in the Republican party of religious zealots means you can condone invading a country and killing thousands of people for OIL as long as you go to church and thank God for the miraculous profits in your oil stocks.
Believing in the Republican oil barons who toss our constitution in the toilet everytime they take a crap, means that you can force every person to come to God by putting a gun to their head, regardless of whether they live in Iraq or America.
Believing in the Republican party means that you can leave every child behind, as long as you have plenty of Christian schools for only the rich kids to attend.
Believing in the Republican party means that Democracy is a farce, but God is real and only cares about you if you donate to their party. This list goes on and on.

Truthortradition,

Two questions:
What is your source on cattle industry? Would like to do some research there.
Do you have any suggestions or antidotes to cure the concerns your expressed?

Republicans abound in this country because they follow blind conviction just like cows to the slaughter. Reason and logic are not a part of the equation.
They misuse religion to gain control of the country and then they slaughter us financially, just like cows are slaughtered in the meat packing houses every day. They pump us full of money-making hormones and anitbiotics, just like cows, and then when we get sick, they leave us on the streets to suffer without any healthcare.
The majority of them misuse religion to degrade women, and then successfully demonize feminism by saying all women who want equal rights are braless devils, or desperate, fat lesbians. It works.
These power hungry Republicans are nothing but a bunch of religious pricks who profit by dumbing down the masses and by promoting tyranny. Their dream is to one day be just like the Middle Eastern bastards who cut your head off if you don't bow to the god of their choice and if you don't bend over when they order you to do so.

Minds of absolute faith are 'closed', absolutely, Bill.

I think you're right on target, the pragmatic view of open minds at least accepts the possibility of the more practical answers provided by science.

Practically speaking, I have to think I'm being played anytime someone tells me, 'if I DON'T believe something preposterous (like invisible gods) that I'M being evil'.

Uh huh...

Maher, your teensy little skit is funny! You're one smart cookie. Now - could you use your intelligence to go after each candidate to pull their positions and substantive solutions on:
a) LOST.
b) Illegal immigration.
c) Federal welfare to TNC.
d) European Union.
e) North American Union.
f) Eminent domain.
g) Consumption tax vs income.
Thank you.

Hi Bill,

I've only recently come upon you, and thank god for that! I was starting to wonder if I needed medicating, as I was surrounded by a country full of blind, deaf and dumb morons who couldn't see past the media spin....

Anyway, with regard to this post. Its not a matter of Democrat or Republican (although of course the later is more prone to retardation), its a matter of those who have brains and those that have only heard of the concept. We are debating whether the lockness monster exists or not, this kind of thing has pretty well been established and if some folks who happen to have the word "Politican" under their names can't see that, then they are more confused than I thought.

Right on, Bill Maher! Isn't it amazing?

They don't mind staying ahead of deadly germ evolution via the latest antibiotic, either.

Wonder how long the Republican attack on science would last if all the attackers were forced to go only to hospitals and doctors based in pre-Darwin medicine?

Evolution is the epitome of Intelligent Design. A microscopic, automated genetic mutation system designed to enable a species to endure environmental hardships and survive unforeseen enemies to allow continuation of the species.
Homo Sapiens are far less intelligent than that.
Just look at the ridiculous belief systems created by the worlds various religions and the massive injustice caused by them. Humans definitely need to evolve.
Is there a higher power involved behind the wonder of science. Absolutely. But I haven't heard one religious philosophy that understands it yet.

It boggles my mind how Republicans can rationalize stupidity. For example, I was just reading that Citi-Bank was writing down 8-10 billion dollars in bad debts because of the sub-prime debacle. So supposedly sophisticated business people earning 10 of millions of dollars a year were responsible for a decision to lend money to people with little or no income, bad credit and no assets to buy a home and then set up a situation where the borrowers are guaranteed to default on their loans. You would think that even a moron would say, "whoa there buddy, why would we lend you money when you have no way of paying it back."

Now it may be true that these idiots may be booted out of their jobs, but at the same time they will walk away with a 150 million golden parachute! (See Merrill Lynch) What the fuck?!! How did these retards get to run the world? How does Wall Street or the business world justify paying anything in the light of such bad decisions?

Anyway, I know its off topic, but Maher's piece got me to thinking that a staggering number of the decisions made by the people in positions of power and influence must be smoking crack. Their decisions don't make any rational sense that's for sure.

I'm finding that as a life long Atheist- I'm beginning to question the exixstence of a God. It seems the more we discover in nature - through scientific method- we learn just how intricate and balanced all things are. From Chemistry/Biology to astronomy- things apppear to be set up similarly in pattern.
Do I believe in the great ol' man- NO.
But I am having a difficult time not attributing some great scheme to something far more powerful than our selves- call it Nature or God - quick word to sum up an awesome concept - of which we still do not truly understand. Frankly I think Science if honing in on What God is - String Theory? The mee idea that everything is connceted is a Godlike concept, and science will probably prove it to be so- something we have always known in our souls/ heart/ gut/ mind.
The older I get the more I realize I fully understand nothing. From molecular configurations to Galactic formation- From the single cell animal to the workings of humans on earth-there is a patttern and commonalities which can not be easily dismissed

That's exactly how I feel about conservative women who travel around the country, giving speeches and appearing on TV, denouncing feminism.

Bill, the shorter days do not prove or disprove heliocentrism, just that the axis on which the Earth sits relative to the sun is not perfectly perpendicular.

So if the sun DID revolve around the Earth, it's possible we might observe the same phenomenon.

But I understand, Bill. There's a writer's strike, and you don't have the time to Google every little fact between consuming fat baggies of weed and banging Hef's Playboy leftovers.

I'm not being insulting. I'm fucking jealous.
