The problem is, the minute the door creaks open to the possibility that governments do lie (a door which has been repeatedly kicked wide open, again and again, throughout history... modern American politics is no different on that front) the question becomes: just how much are we being lied to.

Today, it's not a question of, should we be paranoid? It's a question of: How paranoid should we be?

The "ERs" brought us the "ISMs" of the past 30 years. Take a fact, throw an "ism" on it and you can claim it's simply an ideal or a matter of opinion.

Here's an example going on right now on good old Fox news. They are covering this so called "9/12 Project". Not sure what it is about, but a woman is thanking god for the existence of a well known (R) mouthpiece talk radio/tv show host for his helping "True americans" learn how to take back this country. It seems to have something to do with values and such. Now, the type of coverage an event gets of coarse gives us an idea of who supports the issue at hand. This guy is talking about getting corruption out of gov'mt. And of coarse he is coming from the people that deliver the truth sans "spin". He is on a rant about all the different areas of our gov'mt where there is curruption and why is there nobody looking in to it. Showing the thousands of people gathering ( presumably ordered to do so by these same talk show hosts and tv commentators ). Thousands and how they are upset at the fact no one seems to care about this obvious corruption. But, if you show millions protesting the wars and trying to expose the lies behind them...zero coverage. Those people are just liberal whiners who do not have jobs or anything better to do. You will not be taken seriously if your agenda does not fall in line with the mainstream. Any one who thinks that the media is controlled by liberal interests is delusional.

Hey, since you brought it up, where are all those war protesters now? The wars rage on with an increase in troop deployment, yet Cindy Sheehan now stands alone outside Obama's vacation home. And why no media coverage of her lonely vigil?

Face it, the media is concerned with it's own corporate interests, not the people's. Read Noam Chomsky. Or is he a right wing propagandist too?

Look around on tv or radio and see how many personalities have shows of their own who have come out and questioned or denied the government story?

In this time of disappearing jobs, it's probably very nice to keep the one you have.

Building 7 fell into its own footprint in 7 seconds without being hit by an airplane. No steel structure has ever fell because of minor fires let alone with perfect symmetry in 7 seconds into its own footprint. Owner Larry Silverstein stated on video that they decided to pull the building (as seen on Charlie Sheen new video). How did they know they would need to pull (tech term for controlled demo) the building ? It takes at least 6 months to rig a 47 story steel structure in down town NYC for demo. Why did they leave this off the commission report ? Why is 6 out 10 commissioners on record saying the document is a fraud ? Wake up folks you've been duped. The false right left paradigm is created for just that reason. Enjoy Bush's third term.

“Jeez, Bill.... would you really lump together the birthers with people who happen to see a pattern in a certain set of historical events( Pearl Harbor, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, the OKC bombing, and the attacks on 9/11)? But there isn't a pattern here:

Pearl Harbor - an foreseeable consequence of the US embargo initiated in the previous months.

Gulf of Tonkin - a non-event. A made up excuse.

OKC - domestic terrorist who espoused many ideas that we hear on talk radio.

9/11 - only surprising because of American "except us" view towards the world, and of course the fact that they were more organized than we gave them credit for.

It's strange - I have European friends who visit and have this fear of American street violence, but they have seen much more terrorism than we have.

Bill is funny and right about some things. Lumping all "conspiracy theories" together is just lame and makes me wonder what is influencing that.

The words "conspiracy theory" has become a buzzword for lumping ideas into the crazy category with tin-foil hats.

There are lot of questions about 9/11 that have not been answered. Why does that make it a "conspiracy theory"?

New Rule: Bill Maher should take some introductory University level courses: Physics, Chemistry, Architecture and American History with a focus the 'catalysts' of international conflicts. (The explosion of the USS Maine, Bay of Pigs, the sinking of the Lusitania, Pearl Harbor...)

I love Bill Maher, but I have to say that some conspiracy theories make more sense than others. The birthers are just angry bigots...you have to feel sorry for people who are so unhappy as well as stupid. But people who don't believe we have been told the complete truth about 9/11 are neither stupid nor unusually angry. They simply have a healthy skepticism about anything our government tells us. The problem with any further investigation is that many people would continue to doubt . 9/11 has to go down with the Kennedy assassination as something about which we will never know, with certainty, what happened.

That is just flat out not true. I heard a talk radio host who has sensational ratings spend his entire three hours talking about this very subject the other night. Don't make such blanket generalizations.

I have wanted nothing but justice for those people since the day it happened. And then, upon deciding that we have all been lied to about this whole thing, I have wanted justice for the millions of Iraqi's and Afghan's whose lives have been destroyed by these pointless ( unless you are a ruling class capitalist ) wars. I hope that something becomes of it. But nothing will, I fear. Because unless the puppeteers that run this country ( and I don't mean any government officials ) just come out and admit to a lot of things, the truth shall remain buried. But one can only hope. I wish ,though, that these same 30,000, and even millions of Americans would stop putting faith in our lawmakers to do any serious investigation. We do not need them to prove anything because they won't. What we, as a people, need to do is understand that we no longer and have not for a long time, had any control over the ruling classes in this country. We need to take this country back and we need to stop electing the same types of marionettes that have been in office and gotten this country into the mess it is now.
