Jamie Dimon's 'Family Reunion' With the Senate Banking Committee

Posted: 06/13/2012 4:39 pm

In a preview of this weekend's Moyers & Company, I talk with What's the Matter With Kansas? author Thomas Frank about the friendly faces greeting Jamie Dimon when he appeared before the Senate Banking Committee this morning. Seven members of the committee were big recipients of money from the megabank.

Frank describes the revolving door of employment between government and corporate America, especially when it comes to Congressional staffers-turned-lobbyists.

"Staffers know they could drop what they're doing and go work for a lobby firm and make fantastic money... They want to please these companies -- even when they don't work for those companies -- because that's their future employer and everybody knows it."

Frank's most recent book is Pity the Billionaire.

Watch the full episode on Moyers & Company this weekend. Check your local listings.

Here's a link to the Senate and Banking Committee (12 D's, 10 R's) we have to thank for their thorough job:

SO, we can say without hesitation there are Senators whose services can easily be bought.

the only way we as citizens can make our mark for democracy is to vote out every single incumbent as a show of people power. Even if we get (R)Money in the process. It will show the next batch who's really in charge and show the oligarchs like Adelson that money is not the ffinal word.

Well I would suggest a less radical move, of simplye every person making sure they know what legislation is up for voting, then call, write, phone, e-mail their representatives. It can be that simple. Or anytime you see or read something about an issue here on HP, call or send your congressmen an e-mail. They will notice. I've done it fairly recently and we were very successful.

There was a faily recent issue on employee privacy that got voted down, but at least prior to the vote I e-mailed that prick.

Did I miss Moyers ranting about Korzine's MF Global disappearing a billion + dollars?

Was Corzine there with Jamie D?
06:32 PM on 06/17/2012
He did his earlier and I missed the outrage by Moyers and just about every other left winger.
08:01 PM on 06/17/2012
Moyers is the only honest journalist left in the country. The topic was "Dimon". Next week it could well be Corzine. Take your blinders off and admit that "plutocracy" is bipartisan.
08:18 PM on 06/17/2012
Except that the Corzine thing was months ago and not a peep. So much for all that honesty.

That's true and Romney wants to snuggle up to the same guys.

Good thing I would never vote for either of them.

Bill this is just capitalism doing its thing the very best it can be.

Until americans understand the amount of knowledge they need to have a social democracy, this will continue even get much much worst.

As they say we have not seen nothing yet.

Third world is coming to america while americans treat capitalism as an absolute truth not to be questioned.

It will not come overnight but like a frog in slowly rising hot water it will come in such a manner that americans will continue to blame everything and everyone but not the economic system that they adore and treat as a universal truth and our brand of capitalism appeals greatly to the greed of human ego.

F/f. We continue to think like there are nations. We "Americans" just happen to be mere "resources" who live on the same contiguous piece of dirt, just as exploitable as any other group of resources who share other pieces of dirt.

"It" is not coming like a frog in slowing heating hot water.

The planet is poisoned. The sheer amount of toxins and radiation is about to punch us in the face.

Capitalism is the worst system ever. More people suffer due to capitalism than any other reason.

Mr. Moyer,

I just noticed that you blogged here today. I am a huge fan of yours and really appreciated the knowledge I learned from your show Friday night. I've spent all morning sharing info and providing a link so others can watch/learn. I didn't know that Hoover bailed out banks and then people voted in FDR. I'm from the 60's and we all were very active in grass roots activism.

I found an article in Politico where Cheney shouted out in glee to the GOP "It's Hoover time again!"

You're my hero Mr. Moyer because of the dedication to bring awareness to the people and you're my ideal of a great human being/Man/Father/Grandpa.............American.

Happy Fathers Day! I am sure you're children (and that newly graduated grandson!) are very happy LSR

When campaign spending is unlimited then those with unlimited pockets are the ones whose attention must be courted. That is where we are today, before the race even begins.

The men were all agog over Dimon's big, er, bank. They all had bank envy. If the Senate Banking Committee were made up of females, they would be looking at him all squinty-eyed, insisting on knowing exactly how a big meltdown in that bank wouldn't require taxpayer intervention. Again. Instead, the committee was swooning with admiration over Dimon's big swinging bank. Ridiculous.

I really wish that were the case, but in my experience working in corporate America, the women also just get in line. Sad, but I've seen it happen every time.

Lindeen, I think it's because we're outnumbered. It's a risky, scary thing to be in the minority, esp. if you're bucking a system. I know women aren't saints, and I don't mean to sound sexist, but there are differences. For example, it's a well-known fact that if a charity gives money to men in an impoverished country, they'll spend it on themselves. If you give it to women, they'll spend it on their families. I guess we just have to hang on and wait for critical mass to occur.

Alabama Public Television no longer carries Moyer & Company.
This week the Director and Asso. Director were fired, as it was revealed, because they refused to add the works of a fundamentalist religious person, masquerading as a historian (sans credentials) to the TV lineup.
http://weldbham.com/secondfront/2012/06/13/alabama-public-television-executives-fired-abruptly-after-pressure-to-change-programming/

Last week, a secret group led by a former Goldman-Sachs, hedge fund billionaire, disposed of the President of UVA without cause, well without giving a cause.

Is everything up for sale? Is there nothing left that is not corruptible?

Thankfully Moyer & Company posts its program online and thereby circumvents the censors.

Interesting article. Thank you for your comment. F/F

The one hope is that although Moyer and Company have been taken off the air there folks can still watch his excellent show online. I haven't owned a TV for over 5 years now.

This whole story is affirmation of the Corporatocracy, more dollars gets more democracy. Its a sad state of affairs, but not a new one. Federal, State and Local all the same, dems and repubs. different sides of the same corrupt coin.

I would love to see people like Romney, Cantor, Ryan, McConell and many more as guests by Bill Moyers &Company.

I know it wont happen, they would not have the courage to come to his show. What a loss for us as voters. They would have to give coherent answers, they can only spin and use the language of Frank Luntz.
