Setting the Record Straight on Erick Erickson

What's Your Reaction:

As first reported by the Huffington Post, on Tuesday, April 6, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs blasted radio talk show host and CNN contributor Erick Erickson for telling listeners he would greet any census worker at his door with a shotgun.

Gibbs was responding to my question: "Robert, on the census. Erick Erickson's a commentator for CNN. A couple of days ago, he said he was not going to fill out his census form and if a census worker came to the door, quote, he said he would "pull out my wife's shotgun and see how that little twerp likes being scared at the door."

And what's the response from the rabid, right-wing blogs? Unable to defend Erickson, they've decided to attack -- me! Witness this headline on Newsbusters.org: "Former CA Dem Chairman Bill Press Smears Erick Erickson with False Census Quotation."

Echoing comments I heard directly from CNN, Newsbusters's Lachlan Markay levels four accusations against me: posing as a journalist; blaming Erickson for telling his listeners not to fill out the Census; failing to identify his target as an ACS worker; and trying to turn the whole issue into an attack on CNN. He's dead wrong on all counts.

1. Phony Journalist. True, I did serve as volunteer Chair of the California Democratic Party from 1993 to 1996. Before that, I had already worked as a TV commentator and radio talk show host for 13 years. I continued in those jobs while State Chair. And, since leaving California in 1996, I have served as co-host of CNN's "Crossfire," co-host of CNN's "Spin Room," co-host of MSNBC's "Buchanan and Press," co-host of WMAL's morning drive, and, for the last five years, host of the nationally-syndicated "Bill Press Show." I also write a weekly column for Tribune Media Services, blog for The Hill newspaper, and have written five books. I am no press room poseur.

2. Census Form. Read my question to Gibbs again. Clearly, I never accused Erickson of telling listeners not to fill out their census forms. Nor did I imply so. I simply quoted him directly, from comments on his radio show. Here's the audio. Listen to him yourself, where he boasts: "I'm not filling out this form."

3. ACS Worker. True, I said "census worker," and not "ACS employee." But what's the difference? The American Community Survey, which conducts more in-depth surveys in some households, is part of the 2010 Census. ACS employees work for the Commerce Department. They are federal employees. Again, what's the difference between pulling a gun on a regular census worker or an ACS census worker? Indeed, what's OK about pulling a gun on anybody who comes to your door, whether it's the postman or the pizza deliveryman?

4. Attack on CNN? This is pure rubbish. I identified Erick Erickson as a CNN contributor for one simple reason: Because he is! Period. End of story. Except for this: as a former CNN-er myself, I believe Erickson is unworthy of sharing the same political stage as Paul Begala, Mary Matalin, Donna Brazile, David Gergen, John King, Wolf Blitzer, Candy Crowley and other great CNN talent who know how to debate politics without threatening to pull out their wife's shotgun.
Bottom line: Feeble attempts to shoot me, the messenger, won't work. Because there are still two huge, unanswered questions:

1. Last week, nine members of a Michigan militia were arrested and thrown in jail for threatening the lives of federal agents. Three men have been arrested and jailed for threatening the lives of Nancy Pelosi, Eric Cantor, and Patty Murray. Erick Erickson also threatened the life of a federal employee. Why isn't he in jail?

2. And why is Erick Erickson still on CNN's payroll?

Right-wingers are exceptionally good at projection and "shooting the messenger" who happens to bring a "message" which is unflattering yet 100% true.

What a shame that Bill Press needs to defend himself from such idiocy.

He has to defend himself because he is wrong. Very wrong.

Gee, why would that say threat to anybody, right? Specially if you are a Census worker who knows how certain uninformed sheeple feel about the Big Bad Gummint coming around to learn their deepest, darkest secrets, right? Give me a break.

Personally, I hope he didn't fill out his Census form, because 1) gov't funding might just well go elsewhere because of his inaction, and 2) the Census will then have to send someone back to his door to try to persuade him to do so - more income for the workers!
01:14 AM on 04/12/2010
I did not fill out my census form. If they want to come to my door then they should call and make an appointment like any civilized person would do.

"Free Speech" must somehow be linked to 'Reality' or other verifiable
form of 'Factuality.' Any speech that is offered otherwise is
'Fraudulent' or 'Deceptive' or 'Simple Opinion', and when so it must be
acknowledged as such in order to be 'Protected'. We could be entering
an era where 'accountability' must be applied to any 'Author' offering
any such element of 'Free Speech.' Simply uttering a blanket label such as
'Entertainment' does not suffice.

In action, a person like this guy, or Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, or Rush Limbaugh
must identify which is fact and which is opinion before offering either.

In My Humble OPINION, that is!

According to our constitution, free speech is limited naturally to speech that does no harm. The most used example is, one can't yell fire! in a crowded theater, unless it real. One can't reasonably threaten harm against someone. There are more limits on free speech so just go ahead and study the constitution first. There has always been limits on the freedom of speech from the day our constitution went in to affect.

The idea is that in the marektplace of ideas the truth will out.

But when one side constantly repeats lies, it is no longer speech but propaganda.

So what can we do about it?

I don't have a clue. Except media Matters is extremely important.

Bill, while I admire your zeal, I don't think you're doing yourself any good by acknowledging the right's attacks on you. If it looks like crap and smells like crap then walk away; otherwise you risk stepping into it.

I was watching the BBC World News last night and I commented to my wife that America really needs a responsible, serious news organization like the BBC. I think that's actually what Ted Turner had in mind when he started CNN. Unfortunately, CNN's current owners have populated their staff with clueless bimbos and hyper-partisan commentators and turned the whole thing into a pathetic circus. Watching CNN go down the crapper is like watching a horrible auto accident: you want to look away, but you just can't.

Why not? BBC is about 100 times better than any American network.
07:06 AM on 04/11/2010
yeah, cuz our corporate-forced, FOREIGN-OWNED media monopolies are really something to be proud of and to rely on for news!

you cant even compare our "mainstream liberal media" and BBC---it would be like Paris Hilton and steven hawking each presenting on the theory of relativity.

if you REALLY loved your country, you'd watch BBC-----and learn FACTS, not corporate talking points!!!
04:12 PM on 04/09/2010
That's what I been sayin'. Brits complain about BBC all the time but at least is does not consider their viewers as superficial uninformed zombies with the attention span of fruit flies. Biggest problem with CNN International is too much American programming. U.S corporate networks do not exist to inform but to sell you stuff.
09:36 AM on 04/09/2010
Whoops! There you go again...

"for threatening the lives of federal agents."

Technically, they only planned to kill local/state law enforcement personnel. Having an opportunity to kill Federal law enforcement personnel would have simply been a bonus and would have probably gotten the Hutaree their own luxury suite in heaven.
11:35 AM on 04/09/2010
Dont forget, saying you're going to open a door holding a shotgun apparently equates to threatening to kill someone.

Bill, he is still on CNN's payroll because they think they have to stock up on racist, reactionary thugs to compete with Fox. CNN's race to the bottom is sad to see; the network once had my respect.

Vile attacks, that's all the progressives know how to do. If you disagree with us we will trash and attack you everywhere in the press we can. The administration is so thin skinned. Any negitive comments they go balistic. The public is watching and November elections are going to be a wake up call.
You had it all (both Houses) and lost it in 2 years. So sad. We'll have to come in and drain the swamp.
09:43 AM on 04/09/2010
There you go talking about yourselves again. These are all of the neo-cons awful attributes. None of this applies to Progressives.

That's the only thing you said that I disagree with, Bill.

I saw Wolf Blitzer on Jeopardy. He was shockingly clueless about every single subject he was presented with. Erickson and Blitzer rightfully share a stage.
07:50 PM on 04/09/2010
You may not warm to Wolf Blitzer. I cut my cable off years ago, so I don't watch him anymore. I can tell you one thing, though, for certain: he was always professional; he never resorted to spewing filth.

Erickson and Blitzer definitely do not share a stage.
