GET UPDATES FROM Billi Gordon, Ph.D.
Grew up across from the city dump in a house without indoor plumbing, was a typical overweight, overachiever: 2 sport varsity letterman for 3 years, Student Body President, Homecoming King, on the honor roll, in every club, etc. Entered a Roman Catholic monastery; they said, "You have a calling but it is not religious... you're taxi is waiting and we will Fed-X your soul to hell." Went to the University Michigan to pursue new passions: cheerleading, drugs, and guys, which landed me in Hollywood, as an "elite escort." That evolved into a successful career as a "female" model, actress, author, and TV & film writer. If you've seen a tasteless greeting card, Coming To America, or Married With Children etc., you've seen me. Then, I traded my acrylic nails and hair weave in for a Ph.D. in neuroscience. Now, I conduct brain research at The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, in the Center for the Neurobiology of Stress, Ingestive Behaviors and Obesity Program. I have another blog on Psychology Today: Obesely-Speaking. I've been married 27 years (583.9 light years in gay marriage) to a former USC frat brat, which is why I know love, not marijuana, should be illegal.

When I was 19, a wise wino told me, "The truth only hurts for a minute." In September I will turn 60, and that truth hurts for more than a minute. The sad thing is that when (if) I am 70, I will be wishing I were 60, like I...

When that high-school-reunion invitation arrives, it divides people into three groups: "I can't wait to go," "I so do not want to go, but I will," and "I wouldn't go on the Twilight Zone."

The first group would be your basic nerd who has a great job and a...

People described my father as a "high-yellow, half-crazy, big, scary Negro," although my father was actually half-black and half-Cherokee, hence my childhood nickname, "Uncle Tomahawk." My father was very tall and definitely scary. When he was 19 he went to prison for killing his stepfather, who had beaten my grandmother...

After my May 28 post "12 Cold Facts About Being Super-Hot," some of my good-looking, male, professional friends said, "It is difficult being a hot professional guy too." These were their chief complaints.

Delayed Gratification

(0) Comments | Posted May 29, 2014 | 5:23 PM

Consistently choosing immediate reward over delayed gratification is a common problem for compulsive overeaters. Scientists call this intertemporal choice (IC), meaning choices that differ in the timing of their consequences. Many believe the inability to choose the larger, but delayed, reward of weight reduction over the immediate gratification of fatty...

Pretty is a thing, whereas beauty is a force. Although we live in a world where physical appearance is a currency, a differential engine drives life, so I asked some models, centerfolds and traditional glamor girls if there are any downsides to being "super-hot-looking." Here's what they said.

1. Their...
