Politics 2012: They've Gone Too Far

Posted: 11/18/11 09:28 AM ET

While the 2012 elections are twelve months away, Republicans have handed President Obama and Democrats a winning theme: "they've gone too far."

First there was the Occupy Wall Street movement. Then came the results of the November 8th elections: Mississippi's rejection of a "personhood" amendment; Ohio's reaffirmation of collective bargaining rights; Arizona's recall of a reactionary politician; and other hopeful votes. Indications that Americans are rejecting right-wing politics.

The mood of the electorate changes slowly. In the 2008 presidential election, there was hope for fundamental change and preference for youth (Obama) over age (McCain); Democrats prevailed. In the 2010 midterm election, many voters were disheartened by the recession and did not vote; Republicans prevailed. A year later, mainstream Americans are reenergized. Disappointment with President Obama and Democrats has been supplanted by outrage at Republican extremists.

Occupy Wall Street may produce a new progressive movement but its most important contribution has been as a "mood elevator" -- a wakeup call to mainstream Americans who aren't activists, who generally watch political events on TV from the comfort of their front room. Millions of independent voters are reengaged, beginning to chant, "We are the 99 percent."

The sea change in public opinion is reflected in the most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that asked respondents to react to this statement:

The current economic structure of the country is out of balance and favors a very small proportion of the rich over the rest of the country. America needs to reduce the power of major banks and corporations and demand greater accountability and transparency. The government should not provide financial aid to corporations and should not provide tax breaks to the rich.
60 percent strongly agreed and 16 percent mildly agreed. Mainstream America believes the middle class is broken and perceives the dominant 1 percent have too much money and political power.

Who are the 24 percent that do not agree? Staunch Republicans. The latest Pew Research poll characterized the US electorate. In 2012, Pew believes that 10 percent of potential voters, mostly young people, will not vote. Pew allocates the remaining 90 percent of potential voters to three groups: "Mostly Republican," 25 percent, "Mostly Independent," 35 percent, and "Mostly Democratic," 40 percent.

The Pew poll divides Republicans into two groups: "Staunch Conservatives" (11 percent) who are the Tea Party activists and "Main Street Republicans" (14 percent). Since 2010, their attitudes haven't changed and continue to be reflected by GOP members of Congress. Republicans are dogmatically defending the most powerful 1 percent but are having less impact on the electorate in general.

According to Pew Research, the Democratic base consists of "solid liberals" (16 percent of registered voters), "hard-pressed Democrats" (15 percent), and "new coalition Democrats" (9 percent). Since the 2010 election they've been reenergized by Occupy Wall Street, Republican attacks on women and labor, and the behavior of the GOP-controlled House of Representatives. As a consequence, the national dialogue has shifted from fiscal austerity to job-creation and economic inequality.

Meanwhile, Republicans have paid no attention to the change in public sentiment. They've stuck with policies that promote the well being of their base, the dominant 1 percent, "the haves and have mores."

This dogmatic Republican stance bodes well for Democrats who challenge Republican members of the House of Representatives. Voters are very unhappy with members of Congress.. A recent New York Times poll found that "only 33 percent of registered voters believe their own member [of Congress] deserves to be re-elected." During the 112th session of Congress House Republicans have taken a number of controversial votes -- for example, approving the "Paul Ryan" budget that repeals Obama's healthcare act and cuts billions of dollars from Medicare and Medicaid -- that can be used against them in the next election; serve as evidence "they've gone too far.'

The latest Gallup Pollshows Obama slightly ahead of the generic Republican candidate. Given the persistent recession, this is good news for the President -- who continues to have positive favorability ratings.

To prevail in 2012, President Obama needs to establish himself as the champion of the 99 percent, the defender of the middle class. He needs to continue to fight for jobs and be identified as a fighter, in general.

Obama has tried to work with the GOP. Now he can tell voters, "Republicans have proved they do not care about the middle class. They're only interested in defending the 1 percent. Republicans have gone too far."

While the 2012 elections are twelve months away, Republicans have handed President Obama and Democrats a winning theme: "they've gone too far." First there was the Occupy Wall Street movement. Then...

I would like to thank Kerry for his extriordinary effort in working with the super committee. I heard Meet The Press Sunday. There are many great men in our government. John Kyl with all the years in public service should have had the wisdom to made the difference to help stop the pain of over 90% of our people. Thanks to the others on the committee for trying, sorry I would like to know who they were,so I could mention their names. ....dentonm6

So, in order for Pres. Obama and the Dems to do well in 2012, they need to 1. Lie about what conservatives stand for; 2. Lie about the efforts of Republican in the house, especially their efforts to create jobs; 3. Lie about the Republicans' willingness to work with Pres. Obama; 4. Co-opt the Occupy movement and lie about its goals, as well as cover up the sexual assaults, anti-semitism, and destruction of property, among other things; 5. Lie about which party receives more Wall Street money; 6. Lie about Democrat obstructionism in the Senate; and 7. SOMEHOW cover up Pres. Obama's absolutely abysmal record in absolutely every aspect of the job of President. Good Luck with that.

You need to provide links, esp. to #2. Otherwise it's just the same old blah blah........................
05:17 AM on 12/09/2011
Item #2: Republicans have been successful at keeping the Bush Stimulus (i.e., tax breaks for the wealthy) going, but unfortunately, that hasn't resulted in job creation. Those job creators aren't doing a very good job of that, despite accumulating more wealth every day. What more do they need? Maybe it's time to have The Donald fire them. And then start a new show, with a different premise and different rules.

Irem #3: About the only way in which the Republican congress is willing to work with Obama is to hand him his pen to sign their agenda into law. They haven't compromised on anything. They say "We're willing to work with the President as long as he doesn't ask us to do something that would make Grover mad." Their stated #1 goal is to make Obama a one-term President, and they are betting the farm that keeping the economy stagnant and unemployment high will accomplish their goal.

Item #7: He finished the job that Teddy Roosevelt started: universal health care legislation. He got Bin Laden. He got Qaddafi out without sacrificing a single American life or doing anything to alienate the Arab world. Compared to Bush, he's batting a thousand. But you're right that he hasn't been able to budge the Do-Nothing Congress. I hope they continue to Do-Nothing right to their political grave.

The fundamental flaw in republican politics, tactics and strategy.

The GOP is standing on the tracks, but they don't hear the whistle of the approaching train.

I need whatever you're smoking. Obama has established himself as a fierce defender of the 1%. Wake up and face reality - Obama sold us out long ago.

Extended the Bush tax cuts.

Appointed Geitner, Bernanke, Summers and all the other wall street lackeys

Attacked Libya, without congressional approval.

Set up a new military base in Australia complete with 2500 marines.

Did not get us out of Iraq in 2009 as promised. Instead he is just following the U.S.–Iraq Status of Forces Agreement negotiated by Bush.

Did not stand on the picket line with the striking Verizon workers as promised.

Tried to coerce state DA's to sign an atrocious deal letting wall street criminals get away with mortgage fraud.

Has shut down medical marijuana dispensaries, breaking yet another campaign promise.

Did not close down Gitmo.

Did not re instate Glass Steagall.

Did not end or talk about carried interest.

No public option in the health care bill.

Just some facts, many more where they ame from.

2010 voter turnout was nearly 41.6, slightly higher than the 41.3 percent turnout in 2006 when democrats won back the house and senate. The assertion that many voters were disheartened by the recession and therefore did not vote seems seems to fall flat when statistics are examined, as voter turnout for the 2010 midterm election was higher than it was in 1998, 2002 and 2006. Perhaps Democratic voters were disheartened and did not turn out to vote, but the population as a whole, it seems, was dissatisfied and because of that turned out to vote in the highest numbers in 16 years. The argument that Republicans won in 2010 because no one voted is easily proven wrong by the facts.

"...but the population as a whole, it seems, was dissatisfied and because of that turned out to vote ...."
---------------------------------------------->

If you don't break down the 41.6% and compare it to the breakdown of 41.3% you can't make that claim.

Both Democrats and Republicans experienced a similar decline in voter turnout meaning Independent turnout must have significantly increased. My claim may have been somewhat of an overgeneralization but not all together inaccurate.

"Obama has tried to work with the GOP. Now he can tell voters, "Republicans have proved they do not care about the middle class. They're only interested in defending the 1 percent. Republicans have gone too far."

Even if that statement is 100% true, it's pretty much irrelevant.

The question in 2012 will be, who's at fault, and who get's the blame?

Those two question may have two totally different answers.

Depending on the ratings of Fox News, and how big an audience then can influence.

The question I have asked but no one has answered yet is, ALL of the GOP candidates have been caught lying to voters, big time. To me that shows that they think that GOP voters are either so stupid they won't care about lies....OR that they are so lazy they won't look at that new marvel...video...of the truth....I just wonder why GOP voters aren't angry that they are treated with such distain....example Mitt said yesterday that wiping out all electronic communication was " routine". When all you have to do is check the facts...has AaaNY other governor tried to wipe out 4 years of archives like that in the state ? nO...

The grand lie of the 2010 midterm campaign was that the TPers were a new breed of Republicans, motivated solely by concerns about government spending and debt and with no real interest in social issues. Then upon taking office, they immediately went after women's reproductive rights in state after state.

The TPers are nothing more than rebranded social conservatives, and the Democrats need to beat this drum repeatedly in next year's campaign.

They did a few other things sence taking over. They've tried to outlaw Shira law, prevent gay marriage, and allowed people to carry guns into bars. Oh and they have decided that Pizza is a vegatable. Not too much on jobs though.

Wow, what a unreasonable opinions. Hmm, what is the difference between "staunch Republicans" and "solid Democrats"; does anyone else but me notice how Bennett used two different words. Finally the statement that the polled is a typical mixbag. The last sentence of the statement, no true conservative would oppose. The first two many would. So it depends on how you word your sentences. Your opinion was not reasoned nor balanced.

The middle class has awakened to the fact that our "representative government" doesn't represent us.
The wealthy have been doing exponentially better and better than the population at large.
This is not only not fair, but it demonstrates that the rule writers have stacked the deck in their favot.
Voting in a Free and Fair election in 2012 is not only the challenge, but a necessity for the middle class to survive.

I made it to Zucotti Park twice (I work in Mnahattan).
It's so uplifting to see the movement spreading.
I just hope that we can watch it gain momentum through the winter, and emerge stronger and more organized in the Spring.

In 2008, the defeated Republicans acknowledged that they needed to change, that they needed to be more inclusive and more in touch with mainstream America. By 2010, a mere two years later, the Republican Party had aligned itself with a fringe element of radical right-wing extremists (i.e. the tea party) that quickly took the party to a new level of low. It had become a virtually all white party of religious-right fanatics with a common bond rooted in homophobia, xenophobia, and all manner of racism, devoting most of its energy over the last 3 years opposing and/or obstructing any initiative by the President that would help the American people and looking for a long-form birth certificate with the single purpose of proving that the President of the United States is not an American citizen. Yes, they won the 2010 elections in a historic sweep, but it was not by the will of mainstream America or even by the will of moderate or establishment Republicans. To the contrary, having defeated their moderate or establishment colleagues in the primaries, their victory was the direct result of a tea party electorate in remapped tea party congressional districts electing tea party Republican candidates to sit as a majority in the House of Representatives. Misinterpreting their victory, they not only assumed that it was a national referendum on President Obama, but also that they had the license to literally "take the country back," which is exactly what they began trying to do ... to take the country back-ward!!! Today, as we look to the 2012 election, the Republican Party is in worst shape than it's ever been! In fact, one need only to look at their candidates - the best they have to offer - to see the shape they're in! Of course, the noise in their echo chamber is telling them ABO (anybody but Obama) and as long as their candidates are talking to the echo chamber crowd, they look pretty good, and it may even look like anybody but Obama will win in 2012. But outside of the echo chamber, in the real world of mainstream America - and as this article points out - it's a different reality altogether!

Not only did they go to far, but they offered us a hand full ignorant/uneducated or just unelectable choices for President! Ones up/than down---Another is up/than down-----One stays the same as no one wants him! It's a house full of Clown Cards that are falling on their faces daily an is the Joke of the Party night after night. It is the saddest thing I have seen for Many,Many years in Elections of this sort!

I agree. Even as a Democrat, I nonetheless believe that our democracy demands healthy oppostion parties. In 2008, Republicans recognized and acknowledged that they were not healthy. And then, over the next 3 years, rather than to seek healing opportunities, they just embraced the sickness, and got worst! But this is what fear and hate will do, and that's all that the Republicans have been about ... they've had nothing else to offer.

No more compromising with these people we have done it for almost 3 years now. The scorpion has stung the frog numerous times and It is his nature to sting over and over again even if it takes us all down with him.
