Barack Obama's Missing Mojo

What's Your Reaction:

The Left Coast is on high alert, waiting for someone to find President Obama's mojo. It had been missing for most of the year, but no one in the administration thought it was a problem until the November 2nd shellacking. Now Democrats are holding their breath, praying for Barack Obama to get his act together.

Responsibility for the overwhelming defeat in the midterm elections falls squarely on the shoulders of Obama, the Party leader. Democrats lost the message battle, and as a result, lost the money war and voter turnout campaign.

Interviewed just after the election for 60 Minutes, the president acknowledged that his message hadn't worked: "The hardest argument to make in politics is: things would have been a lot worse if we hadn't done all those taken all these steps..." But he didn't suggest an alternative message.

Obama understands he has a problem but he doesn't seem to know what to do about it. Indeed, immediately after the election he left the country for an extended period without addressing the major issues revealed by the November 2nd debacle: the lack of a coherent Democratic message about jobs, the absence of a coordinated national campaign, the failure of senior Democratic leadership, and the seeming lack of passion on the part of the White House.

Somewhere over the last two years, the president has neglected two principles that every successful CEO must follow: there can only be one number one priority and it's not sufficient to work hard, you have to be seen as effective.

After the midterm election, many pundits suggested that where Obama went wrong -- where he got off track and led the Democratic Party over the cliff -- was health care reform. The widely-shared opinion was that the administration should have focused on jobs and the economy, rather than health care. Nonetheless, the obvious rejoinder is that corporate health care costs have been a drag on the economy, and health care reform should spur employment.

Obama's fundamental problem has been that his priorities aren't clear. The language of his administration suggests a cocky attitude: we're smart folks, who can do everything: fix the economy, fight two wars, abate global climate change, and attend to all the other problems. But that's an absurd stance. There's too much going on to tackle all problems simultaneously. Unfortunately, the White House, with their nose to the grindstone and their shoulder to the wheel, can't see that.

The president needs to step back, take a deep breath, and declare that his number one priority is resolving the jobs crisis.

Because Republicans are sheep and therefore easily herded in the same direction, by attack dogs such as Karl Rove, they show remarkable discipline. Typically they have a daily message. The White House needs to emulate this.

The president's daily message should be about jobs. "This is what we are doing today to help employment." "Here's an example of how our stimulus package saved or created jobs." "Reducing taxes for the wealthy won't create jobs; to the contrary it will have the following deleterious affects on the economy..."

At the moment, there's confusion about the agenda for the "lame duck" session of Congress. Obama should gather Congressional leaders and say: "My number one priority is creating jobs. Here are the items I want you to work one in order to create jobs."

Every day that passes without clear direction from President Obama contributes to the impression that he's lost his mojo. That the self-confidence and seeming clarity of purpose of his campaign has disappeared. That he's floundering, buffeted by a series of powerful political winds. That his decisions are guided by arcane political calculations rather than reference to a moral compass.

As a consequence, the punditocracy has turned against Obama. First, we saw op-eds predicting Democrats were headed for disaster in the midterm elections. Next came opinion pieces analyzing what went wrong with the Democratic national campaign -- most blaming the White House. Now we're seeing columns suggesting that the Democratic base is angry with Obama. Next will be pseudo-psychoanalytic op-eds suggesting that the president has a character deficiency that impairs his leadership. How many weeks will pass before pundits issue a prophesy of a Democratic insurgency that will run candidates, such as Mayor Bloomberg or Secretary Clinton, against Obama in 2012?

Obama's situation isn't necessarily terminal. He can remedy it by finding his mojo. But he can't delay.

Clearly Republicans smell blood. Like a pack of wolves, GOP operatives are circling the White House, lashing out at the Obama administration, trying to sink their long teeth into the President and bring him down.

The only way for Barack Obama to avoid what, at the moment, seems like a dreadful season of bloodletting is for him to begin acting like the leader all of us believed him to be when we voted for him in 2008.

His "mojo" has been compromised by corporate lobbyists and corporate money.

We need change, I'm going to lead the charge said the president. the problem is everyone sees the need for change, wants change and votes for change but on one wants to change what they do of anything critical to their life and daily routine. They want everyone else to change. The are afraid of change. Until everyone is convinced that in order to deal with the massive problems we face that everyone has to accept change of some sort. This is the message the president needs to communicate every day.

Presidential Mojo is not going to restore the economy. This takes some understanding by the people.

My main question is, why aren't Obama and his staff hearing this very same advice from all of us who are giving it to them? It's as if, whenever us strong, dye-in-the-wool DEMOCRATS speak to them, they put their fingers in their ears and say "la-la-la I can't hear you." And where is the DNC in all of this? Have they done any messaging for their party's politicians or to support the time-worn policies that us Democrats have grown old with?

It seems that they only pay attention to the polls, the right-wingers in the Senate, and the tea party. And they wonder, "in what way can we appease them so that they'll stop hating Obama and calling him names?"

Who cares? Why doesn't this administration start paying fealty to those of us who backed them, and continue to back our party, in all of these elections?

Because the ideas are unpopular in America. You socialist loons are only 20% and you can not win elections on 20%. So, it is a game they play as they try to once again fool the independants like they did in 2008. The independants will not be fooled again I do not think. He has exposed himself.

I believe the sadness on his face is due to his daily discovery of the larger web of interlocking, self-supporting agendas that guarantee the status-quo. The president will hire skilled surgeons and chemotherapists if he hopes to safely remove the tumors that are consuming an ever-increasing share of our human and material resources.

There was a lot of talk about the START treaty on the Sun AM shows, as well as the TSA "screenings", and some of that talk does show that Obama has been missing opportunities to slam the GOP and rein in these TSA types. How in the world can an entire political party focus solely on limiting the opposite party's presidency to one term and claim that the "American people have spoken". The Republicans are NOT going to approve a new START treaty because they don't want to give Obama and the Democrats what they want: a world where nuclear weapons are monitored and that monitoring is known. If that isn't unpatriotic, anti-American, besides being totally stupid, I don't know what is. This treaty has not been in effect for almost a year! That is a year for someone to develop some real nuclear destroyers, but the Republicans aren't willing to pass the legislation needed to begin the START process. Most of our allies are strongly in favor of the START process, but.... TSA continues to treat Americans like suspects, terrorists, or Israelis, depending on which model fits the bill. Obama did say something about it but he shouldn't be afraid to criticize some of the very ugly 'screening', especially of four-year olds. Such outrage has led TSA to not screen children younger than twelve. That is just one small piece of the crap that Americans are experiencing these days.

I just saw that the deficit commission calls for a 6.5 % national sales tax. I think it sucks that we have to go to that extreme but it is time for the non contributors to start chipping in, so bring it on. ALL will contribute 6.5 % to the country. " No one making less than 250k will pay any more in taxes ". What about the cig taxes ? Who pays that ? This Obama has turned out to be mainly lies and we are paying till it hurts.

So they sure pick a down-looking tired phot of President Obama for the article.

I think anybody who's been on the round robin of talks he's just made will also look tired. But I have all confidence in Mr. Obama that he will bounce back after some rest and continue the remarkable job he's been doing.

The records will show the Democratic Congress and Mrs Pelosi deserve a lot of credit for enacting what they have in spite of obstructionist opposition. Now that the negative spin the conservatives gave to every effort of the Democrats, I believe time will show that many of the calls made have been working and will help America recover.

I'm gratified to see many of the comments are favorable here and only hope this isn't only a liberal enclave.

Obama's administration has done a wonderful job . . . if passing substance-less bills is all they've set out to do. The guy speaks really well for the working class, too. But it would do better for the Democratic party if there were any teeth in his convictions. I'd prefer to see him pushing the Democratic agenda and well-formed policies than putting legislative notches in his meaningless-and-unhelpful-bills belt. He's no longer a legislator in the Senate. He's supposed to be a LEADER. He's in the White House. Why doesn't he use it?

Compared to the whopping mistakes of Bush & Cheney, I think President Obama's are minimal. If we had enough intelligent voters who know Limbaugh & Beck are not authentic journalists and certainly not economists, but just jokers, we would have more credible, better educated voters. We need to put part of the blame on unintelligent voters who didn't understand that when they voted for Republicans who were working & voting against recovery, they were voting against recovery and against their own success.

I think alot of those unintelligent voters will figure it out and the Republicans will pay. But, unfortunately for all of us, the people who really control this nation (lobbyists and chamber of commerce, etc.) will remain 3 or 4 steps ahead of us.

Geez, Obama has stated over and over for months that the #1 priority is jobs. So no, that's not, to my mind, the answer. What he needs to do right now is to reclaim his rather lost credibility.

That is, he needs to join Pelosi and Reed in drawing the line in the enriched manure that Boehner and McConnell are standing in (Tax Breaks for The Two-Percenters that the 98-Percenters Can Pay For).

And then let them boys know, sternly, that they can stay right there or move over to the sandy patch of No Tax Break for the Two-Percenters, Not Now, Not Never."

The President's mojo is not the issue I don't believe and I say this simply as an American who have lived through many administrations. First of all President Obama and his administration took his victory for granted way to much. Yeah historic win which he had to do something with for the American people and not just his ideology.

The average American family with father, mother and kids all healthy but the parents unemployed could care less about his determination to give us his health care plan. That is the way it is and I was surprised when Obama did not make jobs and the economy his top priority. Again, when everyone is healthy in the family the family is not thinking about health care as they face losing their homes.

Secondly I don't know why this administration did not hype their accomplishments more than they did. The other side says that Obama is arrogant, even though I personally can't see where he is, but hell he should be arrogant with those who don't like him and will never like him no matter how much he tries to get along with them. Bump em!! Then brag about what you do and don't continually back away from a fight. Sit down with Bill Clinton and learn how to be a political gunslinger. The Republican Machine came after Bill and he kicked their butts. He didn't do it by caving in but by standing firm and counter attacking.
05:25 PM on 11/20/2010
Obama hasn't lost his mojo. He told us in the campaign that he wanted to change the way Washington worked (or did not work). He seldom mentioned substantive change. He talked mostly about process. And the Republicans stymied his hopes to change the process. He may never have had the mojo his followers want him to have and use.
That's why it is so important for strong woman Nancy to stay on in the Congress. The substantive changes she guided through the house showed extraordinary skill. She is tough, strong and determined. WIth luck, Obama will bring her into his circle of advisors. Someone needs to fight and it's pretty clear at this time, she is it. Obama is just not a fighter and never has been.

I Agree. And the blame MUST be put smack dab where it belongs. Onto the Republicans who even announced at the beginning of this Administration that they planned to vote against EVERYTHING this President does. And I put blame also on the GE. Disney, Corporate owned media who have tooted the horn of the Republican's dissent every chance they found all along the way over two years. And the media is still giving way too much platform time to the "NO" Republicans. There is not just a couple sources of blame, as it is many faceted.
04:09 PM on 11/20/2010
Look at the opposition. Fox news reports a lie a minute and Sarah Palin runs on venom. The Republicans have lost their moorings. The Corporations openly hurt people and they both were just rewarded for their greed. If I were President Obama, I might be very depressed right now.

I want President Obama to lead and I want him to fight. I also hope people see that the attacks against him are hateful and personal. I feel them too; they are directed against progressives, African Americans, Mexicans, the Gays, all of us. We need to have each other's backs and bring the President along. He is our first black president and he needs our support if we want to succeed.

AGREE here too. EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION is necessary so that when voters go to into the booths, they can recognize that they do not want to reward a party that is not doing it's job when it goes against everything an Administration does.
