Republicans Can't Handle the Truth About Bin Laden

Posted: 05/02/2012 1:30 pm

Republicans continuously get it wrong about terrorism and national security issues.

Wait. Correction.

They get it wrong about everything, actually. The environment, the economy, women's issues, race, government regulation, comedy (as I wrote here last week) -- you name it, they're wildly off base about it. But specifically, today, let's look at this week's Republican Freakout. It's about a commercial from the president's campaign, featuring President Clinton discussing the killing of bin Laden as a successful and decisive endeavor by the president.

It's not only a strong commercial, but the president should absolutely feature this as one of many first term successes. The most wanted terrorist in the world -- the man responsible for September 11 and other attacks against the United States and its allies -- was killed exactly a year ago in a precision raid under the close supervision of President Obama and his national security team. The event brought some sort of closure to a long, dark ride through a misguided war against terrorism (not to mention some closure for btin Laden's many victims).

And just over two years into his first term, President Obama, who many Republicans mistakenly caricaturized as a weak and wimpy commander-in-chief, was able to achieve something that eluded the tough-talking roid-raging Bush team for eight years. Not only that, but both mainstream and radical conservatives alike have tried to paint President Obama himself as a Muslim terrorist using conspiracy theories and a wide variety of attacks like the ongoing dog-whistle conflation of "Osama" and "Obama," the pejorative use of the president's middle name, the slackjawed birther nonsense and the "pals around with domestic terrorists" line from Sarah Palin and others.

President Obama was able to achieve a victory the Republicans firmly believed only they were capable of achieving. Bin Laden was shot in the head by a Navy SEAL under orders from Barack Obama. This alleged terrorist sleeper cell in the White House has killed or captured most of al-Qaeda, killed bin Laden, participated in the effort that brought down (and eventually killed) Muammar Gaddafi, and has essentially won the so-called "war against terror" using none of the fearmongering and scare-tactics indicative of the Republican right.

So hell yes, the president should be using this in the campaign. Wouldn't you?

Mitt Romney and a gaggle of other Republicans evidently would not. Here's John McCain, for example:

"Shame on Barack Obama for diminishing the memory of September 11th and the killing of Osama bin Laden by turning it into a cheap political attack ad. This is the same President who once criticized Hillary Clinton for invoking bin Laden 'to score political points.'"

Yeah, about that. Here's a video...

And four years later, in 2008, during his campaign for president, not only did McCain and Palin invoke 9/11 and bin Laden countless times, but at McCain's nominating convention there was this:
Of course there's major difference between these videos and the innocuous Obama campaign commercial featuring President Clinton.

When McCain noted that President Obama criticized Hillary Clinton's "invoking on bin Laden," McCain was right. And so did I at the time. But here's the big difference: the president isn't using bin Laden to scare us. The Republicans only ever used 9/11, bin Laden and terrorism to scare people into voting for them. This is fearmongering. It's the flagrant exploitation of both a tragedy and the threat of an on-the-loose maniac to trick voters into supporting Republican policies for no other reason than to ameliorate their irrational fear.

The president, on the other hand, isn't telling us to be afraid. He's telling us that we can rest assured knowing that he's capable of doing the job with competence, decisiveness and a little bit of "cool" -- he's also debunking the spindly possibly-Muslim cartoon character the Republicans have carefully constructed since whenever.

Shocking, isn't it, how the Republicans don't understand the distinction between noting a victory and scaring Americans into supporting them. Maybe if they had been more focused on actually getting bin Laden, and not on shoehorning the words "September 11th" into every campaign commercial and stump speech, they might have actually succeeded in the effort.

Conversely, the president has barely (to a fault) mentioned the bin Laden killing, and I can think of very few if any occasions when the president has mentioned 9/11 -- nowhere near the ooga-booga you'll-die-without-us Tourette's-like frequency of Bush, Giuliani, Cheney, McCain, Romney and the Republicans. Hell, one of the biggest flaws of the president and his team is they're frustratingly quiet when it comes to ballyhooing their own successes.

So regarding the campaign commercial, yes -- more like that, please. It's an important distinction that's crying out to be defined: while the Republicans might be good at coming up with scary bumper sticker slogans, the Obama team can actually do the job.

If killing Osama was such a big deal why are the Taliban stronger now than they were before the surge?

Democrats are simply stating, as a matter of fact, that Obama got bin laden.
We are simply quoting Mitt Romney's own words when discussing Romney's bin laden strategy.

De-prioritizing the capture of bin laden is a main reason that "Dubya" didn't get him.
These are simple, straight forward facts.

Boy, facts can really tick people off!

It's more than the repubs, just can't handle the truth about, OBL. They can't handle the truth and are wrong on most issues. 1-The Swiss and Cayman accounts, and taxes, not paid. 2-Equal pay for equal work, for women and minorities. 3-All immigration issues. 4-Women's Health-Care, a-aspirin between the knees, b-just close your eyes, c-trans-vaginal ultra-sound. 5-Student Loans-interest flip-flops and extortion attempt. 6-Debt Ceiling extortion attempts. 7-Big Oil subsidies, on top of record profits. 8-the dukes, big 6mil. campaign at false attack ads about jobs, a-Electric cars in Finland, b-Street lights in China, c-Solar plants in Mexico; ALL false ads. 9-Poor knowledge on security to the nation. 10-Luke-warm, and arm-twisting support, of the absolute worse, repub candidate in this countries history. Goldwater was even better. Other than being a racist, how could anyone, vote repub again?

President Obama has possibly been the most capable commander-in-chief of my lifetime. As a veteran, I am proud of his leadership.
03:55 PM on 05/03/2012
It is much more possible that he isn't. The fact that you believe he is is possibly because you are so clueless.

Not only is President Obama perhaps the most capable CIC I've seen in my lifetime, he is modest about his role in the Bin Laden mission and heaps praise on the Navy Seals and the intelligence community and stresses this is the result of Americans working together.

During his recent trip to Afghan President Obama was mobbed by our troops: all of them eager to shake his hand or embrace him. This enthusiasm is not something that can be faked and I think it reflects the fact that the troops know Obama respects and honors them and sends them into harm's way only after deep deliberation and when it is the right, necessary thing to do.

The commercial referred to didn't attempt to frighten us: it was meant to reassure us.

Real life: it's more than making up zippy bumper stickers. It's about getting the job done.

Wonder why he doesn't make claim for killing American born terrorist, Anwar al-Awlaki. I guess making that claim that he killed an american wouldn't set well with the progressive party now would it. OH no, as long as it wasn't a Republican President it's okay.

You had me at "Republicans can't handle the truth".
03:53 PM on 05/03/2012
Lets see how well liberals handle the truth when they have found that the republicans have taken the House, Senate, and White House in November. Then you guys can go back to doing what you do best: complaining.
Its obvious that running a country is not your forte.

08:05 PM on 05/04/2012
Remind us, again, how running the country was Bush's forte.
And remind us, again, how much Republicans don't complain when their party is out of power.

By the way, JTS, the electoral outlook (top o' the page) ain't looking bad for the prez.

Sure, go ahead and run commercials like these, follow it with a GOP ad of the state of the economy, deficit, unemployment #, and Obama's quote "I guess the jobs weren't as shovel ready as we thought".

Meh, more defense of the President for doing what he (the Prez) promised not to do. And forget the Republicans, Bobby - got any response to the Navy Seals telling Obama to shut it?

The president got to thenk the Navy guys personally. And they were gracious. They can not assume the limelight like fat old useless Republicans as their lives and the lives of their families may be put in danger. This because they actually did som ething. Unlike those fat, pale useless Republicans and their talking heads.
06:21 PM on 05/03/2012
Pretty sure the "Prez" DID in fact promise to go into Pakistan unilaterally to get Bin Laden.
12:11 PM on 05/03/2012
Repubs are just upset because they were going to use Obama not catching OBL in ads and now they can't. Obama took away their boogeyman. Does anybody think that if the repubs had caught OBL, that they wouldn't be screaming it from the rooftops 24/7?

Why media is giving these GOP air time to spew out lies, distortions, misinformation is beyond me. And why the liberal/progressive tv & radio hosts take seriously what GOP says is more mystery. This GOP is a big fat joke, and their comments should be treated as such. But no, every day much air time is given to playing and discussing what GOP said without qualifying the comments as such.

JonStewart is the only tv host that presented what GOP said in 2004 election when they campaigned against John Kerry using Osama, 9/11, terrorists to show how country should vote for them. Where were the CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, etc. showing what these clowns did in 2004.

For me, it shows how inept and useless and GOP water carriers our media has become.

I agree. Media has gotten so beatup that they just present 'he said' 'she said' as reporting. It's tragic. Where is Walter Cronkite, or even Tom Brokaw?

Tragic how our press (controlled by large corporations) has failed us.
11:56 AM on 05/03/2012
The Republicans put George Bush Jr. in a flight suit and had him striding across the deck of a carrier under a huge banner that said "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED".......First, they were WRONG. Second, That was political theater. So they can whine and whine and whine......Most people are coming to realize this is a party of angry, white men. That's it. That's their base. As a woman--here's a message to all those angry white men. Real men don't show off, they don't bully and they don't fear monger. They go and get the job done!!!! And, real men congratulate other real men over a true "Mission Accomplished". They don't whine. So, increasingly, you are painting yourselves into the corner of impotence. As my husband would say, it's time for all of you to man up and show some character and integrity. You don't know---you might actually like being that way!!!!!!!!
