The Tide Is Turning

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

I have no idea who Roger Waters is supporting in this thing (and I hasten to note that this video was created without his permission), but when I heard Senator Obama's historic Philadelphia address last week, this song, "The Tide Is Turning," from Waters' underrated 1987 album Radio KAOS kept running on a loop in my head.

The song and the speech compelled me to take a break from the snark to assemble this mash-up as a tribute to everyone who has endured this seven-year-long dark ride; and to everyone who hopes that America can and will change for the better.

Until recently, I honestly didn't think it was possible. And even though it's only the beginning, Senator Obama's campaign is clearly our best shot to, at the very least, turn the tide against this seemingly interminable darkness.

I guess, judging by some of the comments, everyone that’s Catholic believes that it’s okay to molest little boys since there hasn’t been a mass exodus out of the Catholic Church. What’s the difference in that and Obama remaining a member of Trinity United.

The priests, as scummy as they are, did not damn America. And these scummy priests aren't running for president.
I hope that clears things up a little.

Perhaps you should take some time and listen to the 1500 sermons that Rev. Wright has given over the years since finished his service in the U.S. Marine Corps instead if thirty seconds snipped out of one without context. Just a suggestion.

"The priests, as scummy as they are, did not damn America. "

This sentence is incredible, to me. To exercise one's right to say, "God damn America," is worse than child molestation & criminal cover-up of same? In one sentence you have literally subordinated rape of thousands & thousands of children to one preacher's rhetorical flourish. The day that's true is the day America will have proven beyond any doubt that it is damned.

I sincerely hope it was poor phrasing & that wasn't your intent - moral equivalencies are usually iffy, but this one is a stunner.

Wow, nice. Very nice. You and Waters have brought tears to my eyes this bright and beautiful Spring morning. I'm now officially your fan.

This isn't a beauty contest. It's a race for the highest job in the land, and after 8 years of bush and cheney raping America, there are going to be huge problems awaiting the next president. Stop emoting and use your brain.

transendentilist, I use my brain all of the time. The video Cesca has assembled, along with the words of Waters and the images of suffering made me sad yet hopeful. I can feel emotion, can you? I'm human. Please do not tell me what to do again.

I will reply the same as i always do when i read something like your post. Obama has the educated vote. Educated people are LESS LIKELY to vote with their emotions, and MORE LIKELY to use their brains.

When your president of the United States your president of ALL it's people. If you think some of those people shouldn't have the same civil rights protection as every one else then your not really for civil rights are you? Hey if it weren't for us you'd all still be wearing acid wash jeans and mullets.

And on the subject of the tide is turning- have you heard Obama's speech on the economy this morning??

OMG we are growing up!

I wonder if the MSM might follow his lead and stop talking to us like we are 8?

Ha. I doubt it.

Let's hope the tide is really turning toward OBAMA.

I agree with Cesca that OBAMA is our ray of hope to turn from the "seemingly interminable darkness" of the last years. I

had once that it might be Hillary, but she seems to have turned to a darkness of her own that saddens me.

Well it seems to me that if you give a supposedly "brilliant" speech on civil rights but you don't think I have the right to marry someone I love, your something of a hypocrite Seems like your not to worried that as a gay man I still don't have the constitutional protection every one else has. The problem with this is that it encourages people to think of me as "less than".Yea pal kum-baya.

It wasn't a speech about GLBT rights because Writgh's sermons weren't about GLBT rights. Obama was responding, again, to outside forces that have been consistently trying to make this campaign about race, then cynically suggesting that by responding it is Obama who is playing the race card.

Obama did stand up for gays, in MLKs old church, of all places. He condemned discrimination of gays in front of some very proper church people. You can watch this on youtube if you are interested. Obama uses his support to tell people things they dont usually want to hear.

And if he came out in favor of gay marriage now, he would not be elected. Want that? This one will have to grow, until we have a Supreme Court that understands - and acts - on the basic premise that definitions of marriage that exclude the option of gay marriage are against the 1st Amendment, since the only objections to gay marriage and gay rights are RELIGIOUS objections. I have no doubt that Obama really agrees with this point of view already. We have too many "third rails" in politics these days. This is one of them. Gun control is another.

Apparently, the tide has been turning since Iowa. One would have thought that it would have turned by now. As great as Sen. Obama is, you cannot ignore the fact that nearly half the primary electorate is supporting Sen. Clinton. You cannot just tell these people to screw off. Either find a way to work with Sen. Clinton, or as Trey Ellis put it yesterday, find a way to bring her supporters over to the Obama side.

...and more.....

FactCheck.org: 'Selective, embellished and out-of-context quotes from
newspapers pump up Obama's health plan.' "Obama's ad touting his health care
plan quotes phrases from newspaper articles and an editorial, but makes them
sound more laudatory and authoritative than they actually are. It attributes
to The Washington Post a line saying Obama's plan would save families about
$2,500. But the Post was citing the estimate of the Obama campaign and
didn't analyze the purported savings independently. It claims that "experts"
say Obama's plan is "the best." "Experts" turn out to be editorial writers
at the Iowa City Press-Citizen - who, for all their talents, aren't actual
experts in the field. It quotes yet another newspaper saying Obama's plan
"guarantees coverage for all Americans," neglecting to mention that, as the
article makes clear, it's only Clinton's and Edwards' plans that would
require coverage for everyone, while Obama's would allow individuals to buy
in if they wanted to." FactCheck.orgg, 1/3/08]

I know the IC Press-Citizen Editors personally, and I can tell you that they are intelligent, balanced journalists who will seek the truth in claims from opposing camps far more than their corporate taskmasters allow. They would have sought analysis from health care experts before making any statements about competing plans, and would find ample supply in a University setting with a regional medical facility in the UIHC.

Obama's experience on embelishments:

Obama was forced to revise his assertion that lobbyists 'won't work in my
White House.'"White House hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) was forced to
revise a critical stump line of his on Saturday -- a flat declaration that
lobbyists 'won't work in my White House' after it turned out his own written
plan says they could, with some restrictions. After being challenged on the
accuracy of what he has been saying -- in contrast to his written pledge --
at a news conference Saturday in Waterloo, Obama immediately softened what
had been his hard line in his next stump speech." [Chicago
Sun-Times,12/16/07]

LA Times: Fellow organizers say Sen. Obama took too much credit for his
community organizing efforts. "As the 24-year-old mentor to public housing
residents, Obama says he initiated and led efforts that thrust Altgeld's
asbestos problem into the headlines, pushing city officials to call hearings
and a reluctant housing authority to start a cleanup. But others tell the
story much differently. They say Obama did not play the singular role in the
asbestos episode that he portrays in the best-selling memoir 'Dreams From My
Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.' [Los Angeles Times, 2/19/07]

This is comparable to Hillary saying she was named for Sir Edmund Hillary after he climbed Mt. Everest. In reality, he didn't climb it until several years after she was born.

Saying you played a pivotal part in a clean up when (unspecified) "others" say you really were just part of a team, is really NOT the same as lying about being under sniper fire in Bosnia. It isn't even like saying you negotiated peace in No. Ireland when you really had a nice diplomatic tea. Or helped refugees fleeing across the border find sanctuary, when....you didn't.

Or lying--repeatedly--that you opposed NAFTA "from the start". Let's face it. On the "Exaggeration" scale, she's the hands-down winner. On the "Outright LIES" chart, she's the only one on the list.

Reverend Rod Parsley believes America was founded to destroy Islam. Since this is such an outlandish claim, I have to add for the record, that he is not kidding. Reverend Parsley says Islam is an "anti-Christ religion" brought down from a "demon spirit." Of course, we are in a war against all Muslims, including presumably Muslim-Americans. Buts since Parsley believes this is a Christian nation and that it should be run as a theocracy, he is not very concerned what Muslim-Americans think.

John McCain says Reverend Rod Parsley is his "spiritual guide.

As much as I would like to find a "savior" here, Bob, there is not one to be found. Surf to the Library of Congress web-site at http://thomas.loc.gov and study the actual voting records and legislative actions of these three sitting Senators. "By their fruits shall ye know them." Although the speechwriter who put that piece together and coached the Senator on how to deliver it must have been a stunning practitioner of his or her craft, "sweet words" are specious. If this country is truly to be changed, I fear that it must play through to the end of the parable of the Prodigal Son... the most important lesson of which was simply that it did have to play itself out. The children of the 1960's who grew up in a prosperous nation where even a toaster-oven was built like a battleship must find themselves old, and without health insurance and with no way to pay for their nursing homes except to give up everything they own and to saddle their children with debt. They must watch their life's savings and their "nest egg" evaporate in a pile of worthless securities while the government uses more worthless paper to bail-out .. the bankers .. and spends $96,000 a second to kill their sons and daughters. Only then might they read the word "impeach" and demand it right now and refuse to be denied by the greatest criminals that ever lived.

Their voting records are very similar, which indicates that they would make many similar decisions in office. However, that does not mean they are the same people, nor does it mean they will have a similar impact on people in this country and around the world. Those who support Obama believe that can make all the difference in the world.

We don't need a savior. We just need a progressive leader we can take us FORWARD.

But what if all that is true and we do demand impeachment and the congress does not listen?? Conyers has said that if a democrat is elected president, he will proceed with impeachment against the bush admin. By then they will be long gone to south america.
