The Tide Is Turning

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

I have no idea who Roger Waters is supporting in this thing (and I hasten to note that this video was created without his permission), but when I heard Senator Obama's historic Philadelphia address last week, this song, "The Tide Is Turning," from Waters' underrated 1987 album Radio KAOS kept running on a loop in my head.

The song and the speech compelled me to take a break from the snark to assemble this mash-up as a tribute to everyone who has endured this seven-year-long dark ride; and to everyone who hopes that America can and will change for the better.

Until recently, I honestly didn't think it was possible. And even though it's only the beginning, Senator Obama's campaign is clearly our best shot to, at the very least, turn the tide against this seemingly interminable darkness.

Inspiration is easy. Like Ronald Reagan, Obama might even believe what he says, but we have seen what willful innocence gets us: deeper trouble, social and economic.

The sad truth is that we remain a racist, violent country and no speech, no matter how well intended, can cure us. I would like to hear a speech from Obama on how he will deal with a right wing congress and Supreme Court.

Recently, our right wing congress wouldn't even grant extended unemployment benefits to the desperate among us. Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat in name only, stood firm with her Republican friends in not giving an extra dime to the poor. Yet, the congress will bail out any Wall St. firm that requires it.

How would Obama deal with this obscenity?

I don't expect to hear much from him about this. But when or if he becomes president, there will be a lot of broken hearts because adjusting reality will require perspiration and hard work , not the simplistic slogans of infantile inspiration.

How awful for you. Do you always predict doom and destruction? There is a lot of good in this country also. Maybe it will win out. Be just a little hopeful and positive.

H. Wallace, Stevenson, McGovern, Nader, RFK, MLK, E. McCarthy, Howard Dean- none had a chance to get elected......so much for your unrealistic optimism.

You will find that Obama will compromise it all because as soon as he's elected, he will begin running for re-election. He doesn't even believe in universal health care. for instance.

There's little evidence that we want a progressive, enlightened
country.

Optimism is the only realism.

Hard work by the people, will make a difference, not a partisan fight that gets nothing done...

I suppose you're one of those that won't vote Democrat unless Hillary is crowned the nominee, so go ahead, be a pessimist, take no responsibility and keep yelling at your TV...the rest of us will carry your load, because its worth it.

The ironic thing, stockgatorgal, is that such people never for a moment consider that Hillary will be exactly like Bill. She will triangulate and advance the neo-con agenda, far from rolling back any of the depredations we've suffered under Rethuglican rule. Hillary supporters like to "sound" progressive, but they willfully ignore the true neo-con character of their candidate.

If inspiration were easy, the world would be a different place. There are precious few truly inspiring leaders, people who motivate others to change outlooks and act. There have been precious few of these types in public service since the 60s. After decades of souless administrartors of class warfare and consumerism, America can benefit greatly from some idealism.

You have certain google ads that cover your short reads that are not only annoying but are insulting. They are not only turning me off to the ads but to your site. You need to remove them.

Who could not be moved by this short video? Never before has there been a greater need for an inspirational leader. Someone who has a real vision, not a media coached list of responses guaranteed to avoid any hard questions.
I don't get to vote and don't live in America, but I have watched your dollar drop against ours and see no reason that will change anytime soon.
I have watched from the side as Halliburton and Blackwater took billions of dollars from hard working American taxpayers while Fox continued the fiction that only the Republicans know anything about economic management.
There will be dissappointment aplenty over the next decade for those Americans who are paying the price for this catastrophe and their children who will continue to pay in blood and treasure.
Obama is a breath of fresh air and I am damned if I can see why US voters don't grab his offer to be president with both hands before he decides that it is simply not worth the bother.
There is no point in arguing with those who just want to rant and abuse. Modern media lets anyone who wants to, check facts for themselves. Is the tide really turning?
Follow the links, read, watch and think on it. The answers are there!

Absolutely amazing. I read the speech, I felt the speech, and we as Americans should be able to live the speech. For the nay- sayers who don't believe that change can happen.... WAKE UP! and make it happen. This our time...YES WE CAN!

What we have to remember is this greed thing is like a disease. Generally, put anyone into the shoes of power, and they will exploit it. But some more than others. And it takes time. Like an addiction, power and greed will overtake anyone. This is the foundation belief of the founding fathers. This is the foundation belief of term limits. This is the foundation belief of keeping Hillary (and her Husband) from returning. They already know how to exploit the power of the office, they are already addicted. They've gone through the "learning curve" of what they can get away with. Obama will probably go there too, but for the people's advantage, it'll take time and his ego prestige of hope are on our side. Obama may want to be like Lincoln after all. A respected place in history, a legacy of change for the betterment of the people. Maybe he can put the recent tycoons into the museums of the railroads.

I've been a Rogers, Gilmore fan for decades. I bought 2 LP's of "Ummagumma" (1970) before being on CD. (wore them out) One should listen to "Animals" (1977) to get a better picture of today's situation. The song I've heard more times than any other in my life is "The Narrow Way". (It's about hope)

What we need to think about with W and Iran ( for the next 10 months) is the emotion behind "Careful with that ax Eugene" song from the 1970 album.

WE will no Longer look at candidates as Red Or Blue - But Purple! WE Will Be Listening , Reviewing their REAL Records and Demanding they Prove their Alleigence to US!

I will have hope, thanks. Even though I know Sen. Obama has no chance in Nov. Not with the racist, uneducated, trailer trash people that live in the middle and lower half of this country.

However that doesn't stop me from every once in a while, after viewing Mr. Cesca's video for instance, having hope in the greatness that this country can be. The greatness that someone like Sen.Obama can lead us towards. I am not dellusional or starry eyed, I just like that for a few brief moments every week or so I can start to believe in my country, instead of hating it and being embarrased for it. Grain said earlier, that Bush has killed him and this country and I understand what he means.

Obama is not the same boss, he has done everything they have asked him to do, and done it with a class and dignity that are impressive. Fahrakan, check. Rezko, check. Wright, check. Tax returns, check. Earmarks, check. Samantha Powers, check. He has acted swiftly and decisively on everything that has popped up.

He will never be President, I understand this, but I will NEVER stop hoping!

WHAAAAAAAAAT??????
Just when more people are waking up to the situation as a result of the Frontline Piece!
To those of us who have been running that movie in our heads for 8 years, the show didn't go far enough or deep enough. But I am hearing evidence that others have been made aware , by having the timeline sequence laid out before them again!
It is time for severe sanctions aganst CNN! They are the network that is 'passing" for liberal!

why is everyone so desperate to make obama into some kind of superhero. he’s a politician just like the rest of them. somehow everyone forgets that he lied about passing nuclear legislation (and watered down the bill in favor of the nuclear company exelon who is his 4th largest contributor), continually dodged questions and lied about his involvement with rezko, lied about being in the pews when wright was giving his now famous speeches, gave 3 times as much money as hillary to superdelegates to vote for him, lied about his position on NAFTA (telling the candian embassy one thing and the voters another), exaggerated his accomplishments as a state senator (many of the bills that he takes credit for are bills that other people did most of the work on and because he was favored by the pres of the state senate, Emil Jones Jr., the bills were passed to him to finish up and he was able to take all the credit), said himself in 04 that he is "not the kind of person" that would run for pres after spending so little time in the senate and according to tom fitton (the pres of the ethics organization judicial watch) lied about his records from chicago being publically available. fitton states, "The more we learn about the Illinois Senator, the more obvious it becomes that he is anything but the ethically upright outsider he purports to be."

I completely agree. Hillary Clinton has led in the electoral college race against Obama from near the beginning. In all of the states that don't limit the voters right to vote via caucuses, Hillary Clinton has over a 100 vote electoral college lead, yet all I hear everyday is how Obama has all the momentum.

Sure, deny Hillary her Florida and Michigan victories, overdramatize the wins in the caucus states for Obama, Ignore that Hillary would have 8 out of 10 victories in the ten biggest electoral college states if she wins in Pennsylvania, and continue to tell us about how Barrack Obama is doing so much better than Hillary.

How pathetic.

What a great idea. Why don't we change the way we score basketball while we're at it? Then, even if one team is well ahead on the scoreboard a minute from the end, it won't matter because the other team will have more rebounds. Or more free throws. Or more assists. Or more three-pointers.

Good grief.

"In all of the states that don't limit the voters right to vote via caucuses,"
How does that favor Obama?????
Our caucus had 15 people for CLinton, 26 for Obama, 4 undecided.....................We are sending 1 delegate for CLinton 1 delegate for Obama ( A former Bush voter!)
Seems to me it worked in Clintons favor!
2 months later one of the undecided's was in tears over our coffee clatsch......over what is happening to her adopted country. Growing up in the UK she has a broader overview than some Americans who have never left home!
Her vote now goes to Obama!

Buying Hillary's latest b.s., her electoral college lead. That's a good one she pulled out of her ass since electoral college has absolutely nothing to do with selecting the nominee. Don't fall for her crap.

I hear you friend. And I agree. It is sad really, because I had nothing against Obama at first. But I sure have some concerns the more I see division, and the division seems to be coming from the very ones that are claiming they want unity and change by voting for Obama. The hateful and cruel things coming from a good deal of his supporters it is as if it was the second coming of Christ and we all missed it. As if he is some kind of miraculous savior that will change the world. He is a politician just like the rest of them. He has many faults just like the rest of them, and has probably lied about as many or more things, just like the rest of them. The difference seems to be, that no one will challenge him on them or report on it the way they do with the others, and when they do? People go NUTS defending him! the names I have been called just for having an opinion that does not favor him, really puts concern into me for where things are headed.

You are stuck in the old thinking, that is exactly why you don't get it. Trust me, I understand your skepticism, but just think, maybe this Obama is a little different, maybe he does have something new to offer. It is that hope I cling too, because it is what we as a nation need so dearly.

Hope!

Verseige, I see the hate and division coming from the Hillary, say-or-do-anything-to-win campaign. Telling the puplic that only she or McCain are qualified, using scare tactic advertising and race baiting rhetoric do not endear her to me. Her mean and vitriolic words also bother me. Lying is another matter I don't take lightly, even it she did just misspeak (but only three times). But you know I'll keep an open mind to her as a candidate, if I can see her tax returns from the past 7 years the way I can with Obama. We've got to keep our government gov. open to the public and accountable ...unless of course you prefer big business running it. I don't!
Sincerely, ImpeachBush&Cheney
