The Tide Is Turning

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

I have no idea who Roger Waters is supporting in this thing (and I hasten to note that this video was created without his permission), but when I heard Senator Obama's historic Philadelphia address last week, this song, "The Tide Is Turning," from Waters' underrated 1987 album Radio KAOS kept running on a loop in my head.

The song and the speech compelled me to take a break from the snark to assemble this mash-up as a tribute to everyone who has endured this seven-year-long dark ride; and to everyone who hopes that America can and will change for the better.

Until recently, I honestly didn't think it was possible. And even though it's only the beginning, Senator Obama's campaign is clearly our best shot to, at the very least, turn the tide against this seemingly interminable darkness.

Thank you, Bob. This was very moving. Several of the quotes you showed from Obama's speech are exactly the ones I used in "Obama’s More Perfect Union: More Than a Race Speech' " http://www.huffingtonpost.com/doug-russell/obamas-more-perfect-unio_b_92481.htmll.
My point: Pundits keep calling it a "race speech," but in it, Obama addressed many issues and told us of his vision for the kinds of change he'd like to make--in health care, the Iraq war, education, the economy. Let's not allow too much emphasis on race to obscure the issues, as it sometimes has in the Presidential contest. Obama calls us to move beyond the racial divide and make sure the Tide is Turning.

A beautiful and moving assembly. Since the election of 1980, our country has been taken along a path that has served the purposes of a relative few. The silent majority, who don't necessarily spend much time focusing on the contrivances and machinations of politicians, and those who pull their chains, have tried to go about their lives without the intrusion of political and civic responsibility. The neo-con success in taking control of our government and their subsequent series of debacles and abuses has slowly awakened a substantial portion of these moderate and moral, silent, non-politically focused, Americans. While not everyone studies and learns enough to be comprehensively aware of the issues and specific nuances of the candidates, the generalities are apparent to anyone who wishes to invest the effort. The spirit of Senator Obama's candidacy has resonated with many of these people and this compilation hits that chord.

It may be too early to tell but todays news about Hillary and her new low approval rating may be the day we all look back and say enough is enough ... it's time to call it quits for America. Let this new beacon shine in a new era for the planet.

i wish it were so for the sake of the dem party, but we need to give the Bosnia thing a week or so to see if it sticks....this is a major stumble that goes straight to the root of Hillary's argument. one thing you can count on...Hillary won't be delivering a major speech on it...

Historical? Surely you jest...Maybe it is for his grandmother, who sees herself hurled under the bus for Obama's political expediency...and this is a sign of change? A man who is willing to toss his loved ones aside for his own political gain? I thought we only accused the Clintons of such malfeasance...

Did you even bother to listen to Barack Obama's speech on race before you posted, or did you just get the "fair and balanced" version from Fox?

Barack Obama made it clear that he loved his grandmother and that while she loved him, she also harbored some of the same steriotypical fear of black people as do many other whites (sound familiar?). The point is that it happens on an uncounscious level, and is not a one dimensional issue. Your willfull ignorance doesn't change the meaning of he speech.

I think the reference to grandma was an attempt to personalize his account. I can accept all day long the dissent I hear and the outcome it proposes. The question is can America? At some point you have to get busy living or get busy dying. Bush is killing me; how is he working out for you; and if you say good then you should be thankful for the blessing and sharing the information to empower more of your fellow citizens to be ok under such an administration. Show us all how to do it. Obama is not a messiah and nobody; I repeat nobody ever said that he was that I have heard. He is a man pure and simple. But within the man is greater than the hint of the embodiment of the right stuff at a crucial time. Policy while not trivial can become the lap dog of the studious and therefore be dealt with by Hillary, Barack, or McCain. Look for McCain to get more up to speed on the economy shortly as a testament of this. Barack is a politician this is why I trust that he can get done what he says. He is going to need to be a politician; he is going to need to be able to "peep game". Yet something about him suggests that he might not be the average politician that his life’s experience might have informed him of a different road to take. This is the excitement.

Though I am not an American, have greater faith in the America people than some of my American friends. While it is too early to celebrate my bet on you, the signs are there. Great post, great video and Roger Waters would be proud that you associated his song to this movement.

Amazing video.

Our chance for a better country comes only when we quit listening to those that say it "can't be done", and keep telling ourselves "it will be done".

Great comparison to that song. Radio KAOS is Waters's best solo album, and The Tide Is Turning is one of his best songs period. It's actually uplifting, something you'd thought you'd never hear about Roger Waters.

Obama is uplifting too, something you thought you would never hear from politicans.

YAH OBAMA IS UPLIFTING LIKE ALL THE MALE BLOGGERS ESPECIALLY ON HUFFINGTON WHO HAVE SCARED ALL THE WOMEN OFF FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS THAT MIGHT THINK OF RUNING FOR PRESIDENT.

So in the OBAMA speech the media are telling us is on a par with the Gettysburg Address, Barack. Hussein Obama casually informed us that even blacks in great numbers who seem to like white people actually hate our guts.

Rev. Wright's world wasn't even segregated.

What about Wright's wanton anti-Semitism?

In addition to videos of Rev. Wright's sermons, Obama's church also offers for sale sermons by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, whom Rev. Wright joined on a visit to Moammar Gadhafi in Libya in 1984. Just last year, Obama's church awarded Farrakhan the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award, saying Farrakhan "truly epitomized greatness."

Why does crazy "uncle" Wright dislike Jews? Why does Ms Obama make speeches infiltrated with sarcasm about America ? OH I shouldnt' be asking these questions. The super delegates are only there to reinforce opinions of the nation that was present BEFORE this scandal broke. And Florida and Michigan your citizens are $# it out of luck---you don't count.

Some of us do not believe in the Obama as the Messiah....we actually use our brains and not our hearts or other parts of our bodies to determine the next President! That doesn't make us heartless, just smart.

I wrote a whole thing on that very subject today. I posted it earlier but that posting is deep in the stack by now so i am placing it on the heap again because it speaks to the idea of a messianic idea surrounding Mr. Obama.

Well, I'm sure smart people can compare the two candidates. Many smart people have. And when you do (and you don't fall for slogans, but actual qualities of the people involved) you realize that Obama is the better choice.
