Has there ever been a celebrity more desperately and publicly crying out for help than Britney Spears? From shaving off all her hair in front of the paparazzi and then attacking a car with an umbrella last spring, to holding her kids hostage last week, Brit has been having an extraordinarily public and very long mental breakdown.

Now, we've discovered at Star that the scene inside Britney's house where she locked herself inside her bathroom with her 16-month-old youngest son, Jayden, was even more disturbing than has previously been reported.

Apparently a hysterical Britney who hadn't slept or eaten in two days was "sobbing uncontrollably, repeating that she would kill herself," a source told Star. Not only 2008-01-09-starcoverbritney.jpg that, multiple sources confirmed to us that as well as talking endlessly about wanting to kill herself in recent weeks — an insider says Kevin was told that Britney said she wanted to kill her two little boys. It would be her way of getting even with her ex-husband says a source. "She already has a suicide note written saying the he drove her to do it," and she keeps it in her wallet, adds another source.

Disturbing! Highly disturbing. And yet very believable. It's been obvious to pretty much the entire free world for the last year that this woman has been seriously mentally disturbed. The woman can't handle rejection. Her first signs of going off her previously straight "perfect" Britney rails were right after her split from longtime teen love, Justin Timberlake. She couldn't handle the breakup. She took up with two bad boys, Colin Farrell, and rocker, Fred Durst, for brief flings and then got hot and heavy with her married backup dancer, Columbus Short.

Now, ever since she and Kevin split after their tumultuous short-lived marriage she's been on the trainwreck trail — in and out of rehab three times, in and out of multiple man stands, estranged from her mother, partying and drinking until she was sick in public, dumped by three sets of lawyers, and displaying ever more bizarre, possibly bipolar behavior.

Star's sources tell us that on the day of her breakdown she self-medicated by mixing the antidepressant Prozac with Adderall, a drug used to control hyperactivity (she takes it to curb her appetite, according to sources). She also downed her favorite "Purple Drank" — a homemade concoction of cough syrup with codeine, painkillers and Diet Sprite.

"She won't live another year if she doesn't get some help," says chemical dependency counselor Marty Brenner, who hasn't treated Britney. "She's definitely suicidal."

I fear that he is right. Someone actually threatening to hurt or kill him or herself is one of the major signs of potential suicide, according to the American Association of Suicidology. Other signs include rage and seeking revenge, acting recklessly or engaging in risky activities, increased alcohol or drug use, withdrawing from friends and family, anxiety, agitation or being unable to sleep, dramatic mood swings and no sense of purpose in life.

Frighteningly, you can check off yes to all of these signs. From her rage at and desire for revenge on K-Fed, to her dangerous driving through red lights 2008-01-09-britadnan.jpg and engaging in risky sexual behavior in multiple, short flings — her latest with married paparazzo Adnan Ghalib — to her alcohol use, she was apparently drinking mimosas again on the morning after being released from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center — to her anger and estrangement from her mom and now sister, to her dramatic mood swings which Kevin complained about even during her marriage, to her agitation during that crazy standoff with the police to her purposeless driving around LA for hours on most days, Britney exhibits all these signs.

So far no one — not even the doctors at Cedars-Sinai and certainly not the publicity-hungry Dr. Phil — have been able to convince Brit to get the very serious and longterm help that she clearly needs.

The professionals that I checked in with were worried about her, too. "I wouldn't be surprised if she killed herself, but I'd be very surprised if she killed her children. I think Britney is someone who is hurting herself to get back at others, but she's not someone who is interested in hurting others (i.e. her kids)," says New York psychologist Cooper Lawrence.

"I don't think Britney will actually commit suicide — she has too much of an ego to do it but she might overdose or have some kind of an accident. She is doing stupid things with poor judgment," says Dr. Judy Kurianski, a clinical psychologist.

In any case, it's an extremely worrisome picture. The question is — at this point with no law on the books that can force her to get mental help and with neither family nor friends able to prevail upon her — can anyone at this point save Britney from herself?

Like her mom Lynne said, "Just say prayers for her."

She may not intend to hurt her childred, but it will happen. She may not intend to kill herself, but it may happen. This gal is an accident waiting to happen. Come on, this family needs to wake up and smell the coffee. This gal needs help right now. What the hell are the waiting for??? This guy she is hanging out with right now is looking out for the main chance and it's called the money train that is Brittiany. The family needs to separate these two soon.

Bonnie Fuller, if you're sincere in wanting someone to save Britney from suicide, stop being a hypocrite - why don't you take the first step that hopefully the rest of the media should follow in covering this story and stop cashing in on the Britney money machine.

Remove her picture from the covers of Star - Stop profiting from this tragedy and stop the presses that have never done a measured story on the mental illness that Britney is visibly suffering from.

Shame on HuffPost for giving you a forum to publicize your trash under the guise of sincere concern.

Britney is the litmus test of how society views the mentally ill - and we are failing miserably. How about a measured and objective article on that.

Sadly, There will be no more Ms. Spears by the 4th of July, if she is not committed for her own good.

There is a littany of things to be said about her tragic state but I only have one thing to say. The subject of her shaving her head is a HUGE PET PEVE of mine!!! Everyone keeps saying how "crazy" she was for doing that. Yeah!! Crazy like a fox people...the fact is that she shaved all of her hair off (conveniently & immedietely before going into rehab) because that is how the drug analysts determine what and how much drugs a person has taken and over what length of time!
That is the last thing Brittney wants anyone to know.
So in the future please try to put that incident into perspective. She just did it publicly 1) for attention AND 2) possibly so it wouldn't be so obvious to the rehab center she was being subversive about her drug use but rather a publicity stunt. Kill 2 birds so to speak. She may be mental but she is crafty.

The media needs to find a new diversion, this one is getting old ..besides, who is really deranged? The poor kid with obvious PPD, or all those pathetically bored souls preoccupied with her problems? In addition, the non stop media coverage reminds us of well know political manipulation, employed to push laws which ultimatley curtail personal freedom and liberties, and expand the power of those on the A list.

Can't a judge send her to somewhere to have treatment.....no treatment, no children. This is pathetic to watch. She definitely shouldn't have her children to terrorize. It just is a matter of time until her driving will cause death to someone, maybe her or someone else that will be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When she becomes a clear danger to herself or others, then she can be brought in for observation for a certain period of time and family members can have two doctors declare her incompetent and unable to attend to her own affairs if such can be verified.

Though laws differ among the states.

I really never understood the venomous attacks on celebrities, especially young one -- whether they're ball players, musicians, thespians or simply famous. I never understood why the media covers every aspect of their lives, and I don't understand why the attacks on them are so vicious. I have kids their ages and even a little older, and I would be tempted to beat the living crap out of any of these commentators, pundits, entertainment reporters, etc., who publicly spew the kind of venom directed at these young celebrities at my children. They may be wealthy and spoiled, but they're still kids and can be influenced. I would not be surprised if the pundits drive Britney Spears or Paris Hilton to suicide.

At this point, the only thing her family might do is petition the court for guardianship, they might well get it based on her behavior. If someone is suicidal, a danger to themselves or others, there are grounds for gaining guardianship. Or the court could appoint a guardian. The guardian could mandate that she enter a hospital for evaluation and treatment.
I don't see much hope otherwise, it doesn't seem she has the self-knowledge to see that she needs to change course. This road is hard, and there are definitely roadblocks to having an adult committed, and Brit probably has resources to fight it--although that might not be in her best interest. I saw a very compelling movie about this recently(getting help for someone who doesn't realize they need it), a documentary made a few years ago called Out of the Shadow made by Susan Smiley. Florida established the Baker Act to deal with mentally ill adults.
http://www.psychlaws.org/PressRoom/faqonbakeract.htm

Does she seem to fit this profile?
Florida law permits a mental health professional, law enforcement officer, or judge who issues an ex parte order to initiate an involuntary examination only when a person meets the following criteria:

[I]f there is reason to believe that he or she is mentally ill and because of his or her mental illness:

(a) 1. The person has refused voluntary examination after conscientious explanation and (a) disclosure of the purpose of the examination; or

(a) 2. The person is unable to determine for himself or herself whether the examination is (a) necessary; and

(b) 1. Without care or treatment, the person is likely to suffer from neglect or refuse to care for himself or herself; such neglect or refusal poses a real and present threat of substantial harm to his or her well-being; and it is not apparent that such harm may be avoided through the help of willing family members or friends or the provision of other services; or

(a) 2. There is a substantial likelihood that without care or treatment the person will cause serious bodily harm to himself or herself or others in the near future, as evidenced by recent behavior.

It's kind of disturbing how some of the posters here have no compassion for someone going through a mental emotional breakdown and displaying suicidal behavior.

I do agree that she needs to move out of Los Angeles. That town feeds on people like her in her state of mind. I suggest she go to a Buddhist Monastery for a while and clear her mind.

Perhaps Dr Drew Pinsky, who actually is a licensed and practicing addiction specialist in CA could help her. He does appear on TV as a guest sometimes but he doesn't promote himself and he is a board certified MD. He seems to be successful at his practice. I can't understand how Brit got out of the hospital in less than 24 hours when the legal holding period for the code 5150 under which the cops got her admitted calls for 72 hours of observation and then a possible 14 days more after the initial evaluation period. Seems like she was 'failed' again by not holding for at least that 72 hour period to get her stabilized on her meds and off the alcohol. They had the legal right to do so.

Britteny is 'crying out for help'? Oh come on, that is a statement that you use for somebody who needs to get attention or aid for their problem. She already has more than enough attention and help is certainly there for taking. If she has a problem it certainly isn't that there isn't enough awareness of her problems. If anything it is the opposite, that as long as she has the media swooning over her and the paparazi adoring her that she thinks things are wonderfull. Fame equals success so as long as you are famous you can't be a failure.
