Movie Review: Breaking Dawn Is Breathtaking. Twi-Hards Will Be in Heaven

Posted: 11/17/11 05:28 PM ET

From the moment that Jacob freaks when he receives Bella's wedding invitation, to the very last frame of Breaking Dawn, the 5-star film is like a magnificent tasty feast that you won't want to ever end.

Breaking Dawn fans--you will NOT be disappointed.  Director Bill Condon has worked hard to capture the breadth of the action and emotion in Stephanie Meyer's last Twilight novel.

Thank goodness, the powers-to-be at Summit Entertainment which produces the Twilight series, made the decision to break Breaking Dawn into two films.  There's no way you could have packed all the action in the last book into one movie.

Even so, Breaking Dawn Part I could have been 15 or 20 minutes longer, to my mind, to have had enough time to luxuriously dwell on all the significant moments and life events that it covers.

Kristen Stewart perfectly captures Bella's apprehension as she's about to walk down the aisle at her wedding.  And the wedding scene is so lush, romantic and heartfelt as Edward and Bella whisper their vows--I just wanted it to go on and on and on.

Now--the gown.  It will not be a letdown.  I don't want to reveal too much but it manages to be very Bella--not overdone--and yet it is stunningly and elegantly fitted (Kristen has said that it was tight), with elegantly figure-highlighting details.

Will Bella's gown be as widely copied as Kate Middleton's?  It will come close.  It's design will certainly flatter many young women.

But back to the lavishly romantic wedding--creatively designed by Alice Cullen.  My only criticism is that we all could have spent even more time at that wedding, honing in on meeting the visiting vampire contingents, checking in with Bella and Edward's baffled schoolmates and on Bella's nervous parents.

Then Bella and Edward take us along on the honeymoon that is every bit as exotic and luxurious as Stephenie Meyer paints it.  Is the highly written about and hotly discussed sex scene as erotic as Robert Pattinson has told us it would be ?

I'll leave it to you to decide but there's no question about the sizzling sexual tension and chemistry between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.  The two are always totally believable as the star-crossed lovers who pledge to be together for eternity.

What you'll probably be surprised by is the unexpected humor that pops up from time to time in this epic film.  And we get some of it endearingly during Bella and Edward's Brazilian honeymoon heaven.

But it's when Bella's pregnancy kicks in (literally) that the film really takes off.  That's because Jacob a.k.a. Taylor Lautner comes back into the picture along with all his tortured love triangle tension.

Other "film" critics - boo on you - I don't agree with the fine cinematic reviewers who deride Taylor as just a fabulous chest, strong jaw, and handsome face.

Yes, he is all those but his character--a 16-year-old young man/wolf struggling to adjust to his werewolf fate - isn't supposed to be a chatty self-expressive New York dude like Jonah Hill.

No, he's supposed to be a tongue-tied semi-lost soul who loves Bella like a soul mate, and doesn't know how to express himself most of the time, except  for physically.  Not too unlike many 16-year-old boys.

But once Bella and Edward are back from their honeymoon and she is clinging to life while trying to gestate her baby, the tension is intense.

Tension between Bella and Edward, Bella and Jacob, and Jacob and the entire wolf pack.

A lot of attention has been paid to Bella's wedding hair and makeup but Bella as a vampire mama is a pretty intense makeup job itself .  And acting job.

Kristen Stewart, to her credit, is completely believable as a weak Bella desperately holding on to life for the love of her baby.

As promised - the birth scene is wild, shocking, and yes, quite bloody.

And there's no way that any Twi-hard isn't going to be left desperately wanting to see Breaking Dawn Part 2.

But let me tell you - stick around for the credits.  There's a surprise last scene.  There's also a wedding surprise bonus that I won't detail, but you will go WILD!

Is this review a joke? Seriously, I thought she was kidding. Increasingly it seems that those Americans of any intelligence or discretion are like the characters in the "It's A Good Life" episode of The Twilight Zone, saying and doing anything to appease the childish beast that has ever-greater power over them.

For all the complainers on this thread......sorry, but the movie was blockbuster to millions of Twilight fans. This granny saw it on opening day and was COMPLETELY blown away with the whole "package." You just don't "get it" and you never will. I respect your feelings and am glad your empty seat at the next film leaves more room for us true fans. Y'all have a good day.

What is with all the links. The overly frequent and random spots of red made my eyes hurt a little. And this sounded more like a ramble than a review to me. For some reason I felt like this reviewer was being sarcastic...I have read other reviewers that loved the film and their reviews felt genuine...not so with this one.

Seriously Bonnie. What was the paycheck for this overly gushing nonsense. The movie was so boring and over the top in it's attempt to elicit shocking emotion, that my niece who is as big a fan as they come, came home disappointed saying she wasted her money although she did say the wedding was good but a little to gushy. And the heavy anti abortion message was also way over the top. And as a vampire movie this one really had no clue. But for all the tweeners out there...well...

What killed me is that there were a few great scenes that were cut short by crap. When Bella is reliving her wedding night and Edward Buzzkill Cullen starts up with his whining, it just ruined it.

Agree with everything you said. Let the box office $$ speak for itself! At this point in the series, it's all about the fans of the franchise, not the critics. Loved the movie--plan on seeing it again and again and again!

Is this review written with a sarcastic tone? If not, one wonders if we watched the same film?

If it's not R-Patz looking in pain all the time, it's Bella constantly frowning. Here's a tip, if it's your wedding dare you should be happy, if you're not, you're making a mistake. Taylor is at least passable as Jacob.

Unfortunately, despite yourself, the intelligent movie-going audience doesn't want to be subjected to a two-hour long advert and it would be nice if the plot actually... you know... went somewhere.

I'm curious what kind of film understanding you have if you thought this film was a 'five star epic.'

As a pro-choice woman I don't see how this film could have been any more pro-CHOICE. The mothers choice. She made up her mind and would not be swayed by others. Isn't that what we want?! It's not suppose to be about mindlessly promoting abortion at every single turn. It's about our right to CHOOSE. I don't see how Bella is a bad role model. She fought for what she wanted in the face of terrifying odds. What more could I want for my daughter than to be a woman who will not just meekly submit to what those around her decide is best for her but thinks for herself- what is right for her? What us the right choice for HER? That is what being pro choice us SUPPOSED to be about!

As even he Edward said...something along the lines I would hate that "thing" forever, I could never even look at it, if I had to live without you.

I just got back from the midnight premier in my town...aside from the time I got to spend with my mom and daughters getting excited, waiting in line, etc....I feel like I could have spent my near $40 and time doing something a little more worthy of it. This was a terrible movie. Even if they did have to cut a lot of scenes out, they cut out the wrong ones and the right ones were so cheesy that there should have been nacho cheese dripping out of their mouths instead of blood at times. And yep, this was definitely leading towards anti-abortion, but in such a bad way. It was not done respectfully. How Edward delivered the baby was so bad...and I am glad my youngest was too young to bring to this movie! Sorry Twilight fans...this was horrible! I loved loved loved the first three, but this one may have ruined it.

WHY, because they didn't like the movie?

Seriously?

I totally agree with you this movie was all bread and no meat. I was so disappointed but you must admit now that we are invested we have too see the last film.

Bonnie Fuller, what is wrong with you? You can write this gushing, over the top piece about Breaking Dawn 1 on the same page where you write that Demi is right to dump Ashton? I don't disagree with you there, but Bella Swan is a step back for women. A GIANT step back. As Stephen King said, “Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.” Amen.

You should read the EW review for this crap movie. It's spot on. I'm so thankful my daughter is a bit young for the Twi-madness. Bella is one of the worst role models ever. Well, there's always Demi Moore.

Breaking dawn was a two hour long, super boring, anti-abortion propaganda movie.

The film has a 28% on Rotten Tomatos, but what a shock, the person who makes her living dealing with Hollywood gives a love letter review to this film even though the legit critics all hate it.
