10 Destinations For The Broken-Hearted (PHOTOS)

Posted: 02/14/2012 7:00 am

If you've just gone through a break-up, reading about romantic getaways can be tough at any time of year -- but there's nothing quite like the weeks leading up to Valentine's Day to make the newly-single feel like they're the only ones not currently in a relationship. Not everyone thinks that travel is the best cure for a broken heart, but you don't have to be a travel junkie to see how a change of scenery can help you get past the worst stages of grief.

Some destinations are super-romantic and may not be ideal options if you're nursing a broken heart, but others seem tailor-made to help you get over your ex. Even in some quintessentially romantic places it's possible to immerse yourself in your new surroundings by participating in a special retreat or hands-on activity.

Here are 10 destinations for the broken-hearted, where you can re-launch the next phase of your life or just find the space you need to curse your ex cry in private.

The Museum of Broken Relationships is the answer to the question:  "What do you do with your ex-girlfriend's garden gnome or your ex-boyfriend's model sailboat collection, after the relationship has ended?"  The museum exhibit, which has a permanent home in the capital city of Croatia but can be seen on tour in art museums and shopping malls across Europe, the US and Asia, features a collection of artifacts donated from bitter or bereaved ex-lovers.  The relationship mementos range from photos and poems, to teddy bears and wedding dresses and even a vial of tears.

Though the previous owners' identities are kept anonymous, each artifact is accompanied by an explanation of the significance of the object and why it was donated.   A prosthetic leg, for instance, was gifted to the museum by a war veteran after the end of a relationship with his physical therapist and an axe, which one jilted Croatian woman used to chop her ex's furniture to pieces, was donated after she discovered her girlfriend had fallen in love with another a woman.  The Museum of Broken Relationships can be a choice destination for those in need of reassurance that they are not alone in their heartache or at the very least, for those in need of a new home for their ex-boyfriend's Scooby Doo underpants.

It's been reported that many jilted lovers have tried to throw themselves and their broken hearts in the Seine only to have both spit right back out. Paris is for lovers, not losers!

You can't run away from pain. It travels with you everywhere. But having said that, I rather be in Tahiti feeling the pain than at home staring at the wall.

I will vote for the retreat in Japan, because, I would love to have a (preferably extremely gorgeous young) man flatter me constantly and be at my beck and call and then, to avoid prison, I would then fly over for the kickboxing retreat pronto), and , after that, I would round out the trip with the dolphin therapy. Oh, on second thought, I think I might go for the kickboxing first, just to be on the safe side.

dolphin therapy is bound to land you in a bit of trouble too. careful with how far you take that therapy, and ask for Flipper's ID lest PETA get on your case.

I think either the day b4 (13th) or the day after (15th) should be dubbed "Singles Day" and all couples have to stay home so anywhere you go you know all the people are single National Hookup Day!

Love yourself and look at the bright side of being single. Don't give advertisers or anyone the power to make you miserable on any day of the year. Pamper yourself on holidays. Celebrate YOU. Create more birthdays for yourself :)

I like the maid/butler cafe idea, but why is it the men get called "master" by giggling maids who perform dances for them and women just get guys who fluff their pillows?

If I went to one of these things I would want the guy to call me "mistress," strut and show off, and perform antics for me.

It's only fair.

how about taking a walk in nature? that can be accomplished no matter where you live and can make you feel wonderful!

i also suggest "self love" on v-day, go to a spa and pamper yourself for example! again can be accomplished anywhere!

If we had it in the US, it would be like Disneyland. It would be Amstyland. Disnerdam. You know what I mean.
