Rekers, Evangelicals, Gays, and the Meaning of 'Is'

Posted: 05/14/10 03:20 PM ET

The George Alan Rekers story is over, but it still haunts me. I think this is because I can't help taking seriously the seemingly absurd statement Rekers made on his website after the stories of erotic massages from a male prostitute came to light:

"I have not engaged in any homosexual behavior whatsoever. I am not gay and never have been."

I do not believe this, and probably no one except Dr. Rekers believes this, but I am sure he believes it.

I was in college when Clinton was impeached and we as a nation were schooled about the definition of "is." I had grown up in an abstinence-only evangelical world. How well I and my raised-evangelical and raised-conservative-Catholic friends remember that moment in 1998 when the terrible light dawned on us: "You mean oral sex is sex? Oh, no!" More than one devout girl who had been having oral sex with her boyfriend for years stopped instantly the minute she learned that the House of Representatives viewed this as full-on fornication. Personally I decided to go ahead and keep strategically working with Clinton's definition, impeachment be damned. This was, thank God, a slippery slope.

I'm all for sublimation in theory and I certainly practice a lot more of it than I'd like, but it has its limitations. As Ross Douthat implicitly observed in his recent column on red and blue families (and you will not be surprised to learn that this was not his intended takeaway point), "family values"-type families -- "legitimate" kids, low divorce rates -- are apparently only achievable in a world with easy access to abortion (the blue states). Heteronormative anti-abortion abstinence culture produces teen parents, out-of-marriage births, and lots of divorces (the red states).

Though I am committed to my own liberal Protestant values, I will always be moved and grieved by the red-state culture from which I came and its otherworldly denial of real bodies. I care about cultures of sexual shame, especially insofar as they disproportionately damage women and gay people. I can't forget where I came from, and if there is a religious exodus from red state culture (not an Exodus International exodus! a real exodus!) I want to be part of it.

I sometimes respect and sometimes pity (or, as one of my Catholic friends might say, I sometimes pity and sometimes patronize) people who try to live up to sexual values that negate absolutely every desire in their body. But I also feel a kind of tenderness for people who just can't quite do it: who insist, after sixty interminable years of perhaps never allowing themselves to have an orgasm while in the room with someone they are attracted to, that God owes them or will at least allow them this one caress, that this caress cannot be sex, and that they have a right to these commodified crumbs under the table of pleasure and intimacy, because at every moment, even as they let themselves tremble just a little with the sensation of this slight secret touch, they are still exercising such extreme and bitter restraint.

The tenderness I feel for these people is significantly mitigated when they have made a career of hating on their own kind. But I still feel can't help feeling compassion, because their suffering and dissociation are so extreme. Today's young evangelicals blithely have anal sex to preserve their virginity, and back in 1998 Bill Clinton was just saying whatever he thought he could get away with in order to get away with what he wanted to get away with. But George Alan Rekers is a man who knows, in his every nerve ending and in his soul, the precise definition of "is."

I had, for somewhat obvious reasons, a near identical upbringing to Ms. Hopper. Not nearly so observant or privy to private gossip as she, however, I was blithely unaware of the sordid world of hypocritical Evangelicalism that surrounded me in my youth. Only as I have grown older, less self-absorbed, and less naive have I been able to look back in sadness at a world riven with lies and rank two-facedness. In this I empathize with Ms. Hopper; thereafter, I diverge.
The evil with such Evangelicalism is not its supposed message- that of repentance unto life in Jesus- but rather its de facto one: to embody superficial holiness in order to make oneself look more worthy than others and hide one's true nature. This religion of rules and legalistic strictures leads men and women into dark places of bondage and lies, to condemn others, and to powerful self-delusions: it frees no one and destroys many. It is death to those who drink it.
But to find Jesus means life. It means bringing our whole selves into the light, revealing all that we are, all that we do and have done, all without pretense. This does not mean a sudden validation for all our sexual desires, but rather a powerful revelation of what it means to be loved, to be forgiven, and what it actually means to be born again, to be whole, to be truly free.

That's Dr. Hopper to you, buddy! :) Thanks very much for your comment. Just so you know, I don't believe that "liberal Protestant values" mandate "a sudden validation for all our sexual desires"... though I do think it's best to validate as many as you possibly can.

Since it seems a few days of comments went away, here, ....Let's not forget how much hand the Rekers had on much of the anti-gay lies, rhetoric, false science, and false legal testimony that have come from the anti-gay propaganda organs. And the real harm he's done to all LBGT people in the process, even if they removed his name from the NARTH materials.

They repackage them, anyway, but they're still lies.

Thanks…a fantastic piece of writing!!! Let’s imagine for a moment that it hadn’t been the Rev. / Dr. Rekers at the center of this story but a random individual (Bob) from…say…the Castro District in San Francisco. Bob reports to a NARTH board on which Rev. /Dr. Rekers sits because he decides that he is struggling with “unwanted homosexuality†(har har) . Bob states that he has just returned from a European vacation with a male prostitute that he met on Rentboy.com who gave him daily nude massages and “longstrokes†the whole trip. Bob then proceeds to ask the board of individuals “Do you think I’m gay or do you think I just make poor choices when it comes to traveling companions?†…I wonder which way Rev./ Dr. Rekers would vote on that one with his peers present?

Ms. Hopper,
That was not only succinct and right on commentary, it was almost poetry. Thank you.

Sean: He was leading a double life and probably had it coming. But I feel bad because he’s so banal and pathetic, such a sad character. Hey, if there’s a straight man who wants to experiment with an escort, that can be a good thing!

Jo-Vanni said he was an old man, and he really couldn’t lift his luggage. He said it was like being with a slightly dotty grandfather."

Again, we accept the testimony of a young male escort being pushed by the gay community to destroy someone vs. a doctor that people don't like for political reasons without any real basis in fact. It's sad.

his capacity for self hatred and self unawareness is massive, and impressive. He is sad, but I have little margin of comity for someone who has chosen to direct his hatred elsewhere.

As for "accepting the testimony of a young male escort being pushed by the gay community to destry someone" ... I would suggest that the innate hypocracy of his actions has destroyed his career as a virulent anti-gay crusader.

"as for disliking a doctor that people don't like for political reasons" glosses over in the most casual of way the malignant impact of this man's actions on the lives of other people.

Finally some new information. Not just the whole regurgitated nonsense from the theater critics at the Miami New Times. Rentboy speaks!

http://www.edgeboston.com/index.php?ch=news&sc=&sc2=news&sc3=&id=105800

"Sean Van Sant: Well, it’s been exciting to follow the news. We know we’re in the center of the storm, but we didn’t do anything to get the publicity. So far the coverage as it concerns us has been really positive. RentBoy has gotten a free ride from people who might have gotten down on us in the past.

Sean: Escorts appreciate that we don’t out people. So far, there’s been no backlash. One columnist at one of the Denver dailies wrote a review and said some mean things about the escorts. People are always going to be snarky about rentboys.

It should also be noted that RentBoy has always been accepted as the place where Rekers found Jo-Vanni without any real proof -

Jeffrey: - and we’ve never confirmed or denied that.

Sean: We went to lunch with Jo-Vanni. I’m not saying Rekers was testifying. I think Rekers did want to help Jo-Vanni with his life. He [Jo-Vanni] told him he wanted to go to New York to work his way through college, and he [Rekers] was trying to talk him out of escorting. But I didn’t hear anything about preaching to him.

Yes a compelling example from the people who wanted to "explode" the "myth" of gender.

I feel for these people, too. It's mitigated a lot, as you say, by the damage they've done to others, but just imagining them denying themselves every day like that is pitiable.
