Woo hoo! The sun is shining, the week is almost over, and we at Broke Girl's Guide are rejoicing at the mere thought of resting comfortably behind sunglasses on a lawn chair or beach towel somewhere in the very near future.
What's more, this weekend includes St. Patrick's Day, which is a holiday not even Ebenezer Scrooge could disparage. It's all about fun, and who doesn't like fun? There are no financial stressors associated with March 17th, no gifts to buy or vacations to take. All you have to do is throw on something green, head to your nearest divey pub, and get your game face on. If we can manage 60+ hour workweeks, we can handle a little marathon partying, no?
You've been cooped up all week, and by now you're starting to lose your mind. So, we suggest you start the weekend aggressively by attending a St. Paddy's Day pub crawl in the heart of Hollywood. Sure, it'll be packed full of tourists, but let's be honest... We kinda need a new dating pool, right? The crawl starts at 5 p.m., and entry is $20 if you'd like the option of returning Saturday and Sunday as well.
Of all the things we could send you to afterwards, you'd think we'd pick something closer to the Walk of Fame than The Canyon Club, which is in Agoura Hills...but we promise we'll make it worth the drive! Grab a few friends, book an Uber ride, and get thee to the valley by 9 p.m. to catch Wild Child, a seriously amazing Doors cover band. We're not kidding. They rock. Hopefully you will have eaten some street meat while pub-crawling earlier, but if not, we'd suggest popping into the nearby Islands pre-show; when you're this deep into suburbia, the only way to go is chain.
Once you've headed home and settled in for the night, feel free to ignore the looming piles of laundry you had to vault across just to reach your bed. They're really not your problem anymore, thanks to wash.io, an awesome new service that picks up your laundry (and drycleaning), cleans it, folds it, and delivers it right to your doorstop. They currently only serve Santa Monica, Venice, and Marina Del Rey, but they have plans to expand citywide. Sign up using the code BGGLOVEWASHIO15 for a special $15 discount on your first order!
We hope you got some sleep last night, because this day is a doozy--we're sending you all over town! Begin in Venice, where you'll partake in Heal the Bay's Nothin' But Sand Cleanup at 10 a.m. Feel good about yourself over a quick and cheap breakfast at Flake.
Next, if you're a serious Jessica Alba devotee (okay, crazy) hike it to Pasadena to meet her and get a copy of her book, The Honest Life, signed at Vroman's Bookstore. If you're not quite that starstruck, make your way instead to West Hollywood to shop the Wasteland Sample Sale, which promises to be hipsterific (there's a Pabst Blue Ribbon logo on the flyer) and will include food, booze, DJs, and lots of shopping.
Since you're probably down to skip the Lord of the Rings marathon happening at the Aero, it is at this point that we suggest you grab some green and start the St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Rock & Reilly's block party is going to be the place to be, though the Shamrock 'N' Roll aboard the Queen Mary is another solid option. Or, if you're the type to rave, you might forgo the Guinness tonight in favor of glow sticks and David Guetta at the Beyond Wonderland Festival in sexy San Bernardino.
If you're not interested in celebrating St. Patrick's Day on Sunday, you honestly don't have a ton of options, but hey--you could always spend the day running 26 miles as part of the LA Marathon! (Kidding.) It's going to be in the mid to high 70s, so heading out to Malibu and laying down a towel somewhere sounds like a much more pleasant way to enjoy a shamrock-free Sunday.
The rest of you will have plenty of options (just make sure to follow our tips on celebrating the right way). Most of the Irish pubs in town are opening at 6 a.m. So yeah... that's happening. Take your pick of the following: Downtown, Casey's will play host to a block party starting at 6 a.m. and running until 2 a.m. on Monday. Seven Grand, Golden Gopher, Las Perlas, and others will be joining in on that fun. Also in the area, Villains Tavern will offer special St. Patrick's Day BBQ and $6 beer & shot combos. If you need Clydesdale horses with your St. Patrick's day celebration, LA Live's party is the celebration for you.
Further east into Hollywood, you can choose to celebrate from the wee hours of the morning until late into the night at Dillon's Irish Pub, Jameson's Irish Pub, or the not-so-Irish bar The Cat & The Fiddle, where Guinness will be $5 from 4-5 p.m., and corned beef and cabbage will be on the menu all day. For those who reside even further east, MessHall Kitchen in Los Feliz is offering specials on beer, brats, brisket, and whiskey all day long starting at 10 a.m.
In West Hollywood, we recommend hitting up Tom Bergin's, which is going big this year to make up for being closed down last year. Irish breakfast will be served all day, Irish coffees will start to flow at 6 a.m., and the bar will be strictly LDO (liquid diet only). You may also want to hit up nearby Molly Malone's or, for a change of pace, try shamrock margaritas and happy hour tacos at Tortilla Republic and/or an all-you-can-drink brunch at Wirtshaus.
On the westside, your best options include the St. Paddy O'Party at Wilshire or the oh-so-Irish festivities at Finn McCool's, which will probably be awesomely debilitating. Whatever you choose, we hope you remember to hydrate. After all, it's back to the grind tomorrow...(cue buzzkill!). Until then, Erin Go Bragh--Ireland forever!
