Were Biden's Remarks Truly a Gaffe?

Posted: 08/17/2012 5:20 pm

Was Vice President Joe Biden recent "chains" statement a gaffe in the classical sense? Was it a faux pas that also included the toxins of race?

In the current political season, where obfuscation of serious policy concerns is the preferred modus operandi, it is easy to conclude Biden is guilty of a gaffe. But what exactly was the gaffe?

For those who have yet to hear the looped video in context Biden said:

"He [Romney]... said in the first 100 days he's going to let the big banks once again write their own rules, unchain Wall Street. They're going to put y'all back in chains."

Was that racist?

Racism is perhaps the most elusive term in our public discourse that is used so freely. We can't define it, but we think we know it when we see it.

I must confess when I first heard Biden's remarks I felt uneasy. The second time watched it, I looked at the audience make-up, and it was a mixture of whites and blacks. Does that absolve Biden of racism?

Here is where my conservative friends would opine on cue, "Byron you wouldn't say that if a Republican made a similar statement!"

Fair enough, but here is a piece I wrote about then Governor Romney in 2006 who was criticized for making a racial comment, long before I had any idea he would run for president.

Romney stated at a press conference: "The best thing for me to do politically is stay away from the Big Dig -- just get as far away from that tar baby as I possibly can."

I didn't share the racist charge that many held for Romney back then. I was far more critical of remarks made by then Sen. Hillary Clinton earlier that year, who went to a predominately black church in Harlem on Martin Luther King Day and said, "When you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run, it has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about."

The point is simply this: Biden's animated southern drawl was creepy and needless pandering, but was not racist in my view. Context matters, and the context was Wall Street.

The chains, though a poor word choice, was an inclusive declaration for anyone who was not immune from the potential downside of Wall Street's unfettered ability to maneuver in an enhanced deregulated market.

The real debate should be the validity of Biden's remarks. Is he right about Romney and Wall Street?

The latter question will be of far more importance long after we've grown weary of debating if Biden's "chains" statement was indeed a gaffe.

While I like a lot about Biden, please spare me his crap vis a vis the banks; when he was in the Senate, he was the main mouthpiece for the credit card industry, which is huge in his home state of Delaware. He fought legislation that would have - and eventually did - reformed aspects unfair to consumers. He's no different from Chuck Schumer, one of my senators. It's great when the money comes in, but once it slows down, they're shocked, SHOCKED at what the banks do.

NO! he made no gaffe.

.Joe Biden ,spoke about what some of my culture(s) overstood as truth vs insult The only people insulted are those who do not know who they are OR refuse to remember their root , OR do not know our story vs HIS-story..OR are racists and bigots pretending to know how "Afrikans" feel?

"Were Biden's Remarks Truly a Gaffe?" No. RR wants to deregulate Wall Street. We've already seen how that plays out. When the financial sector can do whatever it wants, the rest of us are backed into a corner.

Dodd and Frank are both Democrats. It is the Republicans who are blocking the implementation of the new Dodd/Frank rules that were approved Congress and by both Obama and Biden.

Wall Street thought they had Obama bought but they were very disappointed so now they are supporting Romney because he's a sure thing.

Biden as regards his remarks in Danville Va. is a cynical, neo-carpetbagging hack. Danville is one of the most economically depressed areas in Va. With one of the highest concentrations of African Americans outside of a couple spots in the Tidewater. Being a ā€œwell to doā€, ā€œwhite collar kidā€ born in PA. who lives in D.C. and represented DE. his mock drawl, softened consonants and flippant use of the vernacular term "Y'all" in a planned attempt to scare and energize his political base is without excuse. Yet you will find some weak apologist with a religious title to paper around the festering flop Biden dropped! He nor most of you progressives know the hurts, healings, history or relationships of this region and could care less in reality. Stirring up hate for votes is inexcusable but expected from these failed, sad ideologs that have run this nation onto a reef and have no idea how to get off it or desire to decuss or admit their dreadful judgement!!!

"the hurts"?

YOU'VE dealt with "hurt"s regarding the "relationships of this region"?

Uh huh. Now, were you on the hurting side, or the hurtee side? Inquiring minds...
06:48 PM on 08/19/2012
Inquiring minds...mostly imbibe trash. Let me be clear when I was a boy, I was taught which water fountains, bathrooms and seats were for use by "us". I can attest to hate and violence as thick as summer haze across the Blue Ridge. The generations that lived and breathed those realities are all but gone and the generations that saw the hurts and the healings are now greying themselves but know the story first hand.

The changes I have seen are stark, profound and welcome. Sadly we have malleable generations now that never saw, never heard, never tasted the hate, the hurt or the healings and for pompous, self serving people who derive their power, fortune and fame from raising a specter of a time and place they were no part to as fear for those that were not even living is infuriating to folks like me.

My anger is based on this unacceptable trash being spread by the heads of a political party that set up and maintained the old status-quo of hurt and hate for over a century in The Old Dominion and elsewhere. Tell me ...what do you think your pissed at....

In Biden's case a gaffe is saying up on stage in front of cameras the same outragious lies he is allowed to say in the privacy of the press pool that grants Biden the privilege to edit remarks in a way that they would never do for a Republican. As to the comment about the Big Dig ,that was a nickname for a way over budget Boston road project that started in 1982 and 22 billion later ended in 2006.Not the sort of thing any politician wants to take credit for.

The Right view free markets like a game of "Monopoly"! A game that was created as a lesson for why certain tax policies fail! In this real-life game of Monopoly, the banks are unfettered by rules that even out the game board! The "Get out of Jail" cards are pretty much gamed to benefit the Banks and the super-rich. The super-rich also get to play with money that is off the board stashed away and unavailable. We all know how the game of monopoly ends! In the end the losers are always shackled with debt and without the resources to continue. The real life game ends the same. We all know it, so why all of the controversy over truthful words from Biden?

Bring back Glass-Steagall and they (investment bankers) loose their federal insurance for bad bets they would not make without it. also remember that Wall Street is a mostly democrat group of gamblers that win most of the time but b with other folks cash. My, yours and our neighbors checking, savings, mortgages and retirement plans should never have been placed at their disposal. Oh and Biden is a cynical neo-carpetbagging schmuck that voted to take the Glass-Steagall wall down in the first place!!!!!!

To paraphrase Rousseau, we are born free but everywhere are in chains. Every culture is limited in it's thinking and addicted to various notions or values that imprison our minds and cut them off from what Rousseau calls the only genuinely natural value, empathy for our fellow human beings. The conservative culture in America is built on the destruction of that natural value and oriented to those that chain us to the foolishness of destructive and possessive individualism at the expense of our humanity. There is, in the absence of empathy, nothing but a war of all against all. Whoever dies with the most toys wins that war, but humanity itself is lost.

First of all Wall Street will put us in chains. This is 2012 and Occupy helped us understand that Finance Capital is a fundamentally undemocratic, corrupt and userous conspiracy. The function of democratic government is to regulate and provide firm guidelines for the conduct of the financial life of the nation.

Hey Joe, don't let the pundits worry you, they are speaking for the anxiety of the elite. The people have your back.

Thank you Mr. Williams.
I am a Black woman who cannot understand the outrage, real and manufactured about Biden's use of the word chains.
For those who were truly offended by the word, I would suggest saving that offense for true racist remarks rather than diluting the issue. By the time a true racist moment occurs, we've cried wolf so many times, we are just ignored or scolded.
For those engaging in manufactured outrage, they are not worthy of attention or response.

The reason for the outrage is simple,it's a outright lie.If Ryan went around telling people that President was going to put white people in chains the press would be shocked.

If Joe Biden were accusing romney-ryan of enslaving Black people again, you'd be correct and I be outraged with you.
He was talking about the entire country put into chains by Wall St unchained
But I suspect you know that already...and, as I said earlier "For those engaging in manufactured outrage, they are not worthy of attention or response.ā€

Unemployment remains high. There is a huge federal budget deficit Obama is trying to bs way through. There is a big trade deficit and Obama appears to be fomenting foreign dissent that he does not seem to know what to anything about. All he seems to know what to do is sling left wing mud, which he seems to be very good at. This is not the road to prosperity.

No. They haven't created government jobs. Not many, anyway.
Private sector jobs have been consistently on the positive, and compared to Bush's record, stunningly positive.

Back to those government jobs...Government jobs would require GROWING the government...which the GOPTP do not wish to do. They wish to get rid of most of it.

How many jobs do you think will vanish, if Mitt gets his way and the Dept of Ed is gone...EPA is gone...every dept repubs don't like...gone. Tens of thousands of jobs GONE. And then...they'll get rid of unemployment...and the food stamps...so...I dunno...what you got left? Oh...I know...you'll hire tens of thousands of PRISON GUARDS for all the facilities built for debtors and the poor and the elderly and the disabled and the...and put them to work for Nike and Walmart.
