Cal Cunningham is a proud father, an attorney, former member of the North Carolina Senate, and a captain in the US Army Reserve.

In 2007 and 2008, he served with the Multinational Corps-Iraq (III-Corps and XVIII Airborne Corps). For his service in Iraq, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the General Douglas MacArthur Award for Leadership.

He still lives in his hometown of Lexington with his wife, Elizabeth, and two children, Caroline (7) and Will (6).
