About 18 months ago I moved onto Main Street in Catskill, a small, blue-collar town in Upstate NY, where discarded Newport Lights cigarette packets are the garbage of choice. When we arrived, there was a sense of a town in the throws of re-imagining itself. There were art galleries, an organic chocolatier and coffee house, and a small but growing NYC ex-pat community in search of space and cheap rent. But about a year ago, that changed. Here on Main Street (unlike Wall Street) the canary started to sing rather loudly, and as the dream dissolved, so went the delightful salted caramels. So when the news broke last week that we have in fact been in a recession for the last a year, it was met with a dark and knowing chuckle. I was inspired to write my own song for the Holidays - Winter In The Catskills, a holiday recession song.
