NetScouts Basketball has selected Delaware forward Elena Delle Donne as its Women's National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Jan. 8.
Delle Donne, a 6-5 junior from Wilmington, Del., averaged 38.5 points in two CAA wins at home over Towson and on the road at George Mason, scoring 37 and 40 points while grabbing 15 rebounds in the win at George Mason. She is the nation's leading scorer with a 30.3 average, has a 10.2 rebounding average, and has led Delaware (12-1) to its first national ranking this season and best start in school history.
NetScouts Basketball's Men's National Player of the Week is Creighton's Doug McDermott. This is the second national player of the week honor for McDermott this season.
McDermott, a 6-7 sophomore from Ames, Iowa, averaged 34 points and 7.5 rebounds for the week. He scored 32 points with seven rebounds in the Blue Jays 76-59 win over Drake and followed that up with 36 points and eight rebounds in the 92-83 win over Bradley.
McDermott shot an astounding 27-for-35 from the field (77.1%) and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. For the season he is averaging 24.5 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting 62.2% from the field, 56.1% on three-pointers and 84.6% on free throws.
NetScouts Basketball's International Player of the Week is California's Jorge Gutierrez. Gutierrez, a 6'3 senior from Chihuahua, Mexico led the Golden Bears to a win over Oregon (77-60) with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. That was after a 26-point effort in a close loss (92-85) to Oregon State. For the season Gutierrez is averaging 14.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists as Cal battles for the Pac-12 lead.
