I had an idea. What if every business in America, large and small, created one new job? Imagine what that could mean to our country. Think about how many new jobs that might produce. I named the idea: One Job for America. And then my husband, Rich Silverstein, and I decided to try to make this real.
I'm not an economist or a politician or an academic or even a blogger (until now). So stepping forward like this and taking a chance is new for me. But I believe strongly in this idea and I honestly believe it will work. Because most of us feel frustrated and sad about the job situation in this country and we wish we could help. We wish we could do something about it because so far not much has been effective. The problem seems insurmountable. Seemingly, the best minds in the country have been able to do very little.
So here's a chance for all of us to step up and, in the very best sense of the word, take responsibility. Maybe a better way to say it is that One Job for America encourages us to be responsible citizens and it gives us hope that we can participate in making this a better world. We can come together, as members of a national community, and try to solve this problem one job at a time. That sounds manageable. It sounds possible, doesn't it? I realize it's a little Capraesque. I think we could use some of that kind of optimism right now.
I hope people won't politicize this idea or think of every possible reason that it might not work. All you have to do is log on to the website, OneJobForAmerica.org, and pledge to create one new job. And then, at a later date, come back and tell us what position you created and who you hired. It's a leap of faith, I know. But if you do this and tell someone else about it and they do it too and so on who knows what we can accomplish. Oh, for larger companies we hope that you'll think about doing this on a larger scale. The spirit is to generate new jobs. We want companies to start hiring again. And we want people to be hopeful again.
This is a simple idea on its face and yet I truly believe it has the possibility of being profound. So log on to the website. Make a pledge. Tell a friend. Together we will bring back jobs in America one by one.
There is a solution to the jobs problem and it could quickly put hundreds of thousands of people back to work. It is not pro left or right. It is not from any corporation, it's outside the government control, it's totally voluntary, and helps all with little sacrifice from anyone.
National Hiring Day #2 is suggested for March 15,2011. This is a day that corporations are encouraged to hire new employees. Corporations are called on to put patriotism first and help their country in hard times. Those corporations that cannot hire, are asked to stop firing for that month. The day was suggested by the 18 year old Dallas art and media zine Musea.
Republicans should love this because it's outside the government and voluntary. Democrats should love this because it helps those needing jobs. Independents should love it because it helps all with little sacrifice from anyone corporation, group, or person.
The first not to respond is the 100 media outlets I've sent the idea to! But if we can get the idea beyond a media that talks about jobs problems daily, but can't find room for this, then we will see.
Bottom line of greed is really bad business though. I for one, when I have a choice, will support those corporations that help out, and will stop supporting those that don't - that's my bottom line and the line of many many many Americans. Business it's up to you to help solve the problem or be a part of the problem.
I think there is a growing pressure from many who find this two part economy not quite fair anymore. You and I for example. Sadly the media has not responded - shows that they are on the corporate side more than the worker side - Strange that every media news show, talks about joblessnes s but they won't talk about National Hiring Day.
Kinda wonder how fair they really are.”
I admire your dream... don't lose hope for our country!
Someday, someone and many will realize our goal - "is our dream to come true"...
Tough roads ahead... but keep on truck'in
Where are the jobs, Boehner?!
Sounded like a nice thing that I might have heard around campus, 40 years ago.
This idea was called for originally by Musea zine, the 18 year old Dallas art and media zine.
There are some differences between the two ideas. Compare Emil's ideas with this

Robert Reich, You and other pundits talk about jobs daily but refuse to even mention National Hiring Day.
The main problem with jobs is the medias refusal to consider new ideas like National Hiring Day #2. There are solutions that are non political, and demand very little sacrifice from anyone. What it does is ask for a very very very very very small amount of voluntary patriotism from corporations.. The real job story is the media's refusal to talk about the first National Hiring Day in January 2011 - a good solution to spark the job recovery. That includes about 100 news shows that talk about jobs daily including HP.

Let's say you run a small business, by hiring one person, you are a part of this. Many others hire one or more. Then because you (and others) hired one or more, thousands have gotten jobs, lost insecurity and worry, and are ready to buy from you and others. AND they have a good reason to support your company. Just one hire from enough small businesses and the whole country has a big boost. You help a little and get good will from thousands that find jobs, in return.
For two months I've been telling HP about National Hiring Day #1 Jan. 2011, and #2 March 15 2011. See over 200 comments under my name Tom Hendricks.
Now I've read this blog by Carla Emil calling for the same thing under a different title

Here is one version of my many posts under comments under my name on HP

How about talking about both ideas and giving some history of where the idea came from?
Let's work together, and make this a National Hiring Day or Week.

Corporate profits are massive right now, while the country and its' people are drowning, and I have heard over and over that the larger corporations are sitting on almost $3 trillion in cash. Sitting on that cash, making huge profits, giving huge bonuses to the management and continuing to harm the country and its' people is unpatriotic and firms which act in unpatriotic terms should be viewed in that manner and treated as such.
I realize based on your comment that you aren't all that interested in facts, but I thought I would present them to you anyway.
If you want to know why average American are out of work or suffering, please do not look at Obama like he's responsible for this mess. He was brave to even want to take on the plethora of issues crippling this country.
I would recommend you Obamacare critics turn off Fox"News" and start teaching your children how to work VERY HARD in school... they should be learning (mastering, really) sciences, math, technology and engineering... if not... they should learn Mandarin or Hindi because that's the future of this world. The future is not here in America, where we are barely competing with the declining nations of Western Europe, unless we pull it together and start taking education seriously again.
point being, corporations and business are ALWAYS going to be in the business of giving you only as much as they absolutely NEED to, while taking as MUCH as they possibly can, which is called their profit margin! the problem is, businesses use this profit margin to justify and brag amongst themselves and investors as proof of their success at suckering in as many people as possible into either/both working for less than they would otherwise be valued at given the value of their product of their labour and quantity of product sold for more than production costs in large numbers, which increases their income revenue over their costs of business.
don't you think it's fair to say that if a company has profits of 8%, it's not really fair to justify worker layoffs because it will raise their overall profit margin to 10%?, which is more attractive to investors? is that "fair" ? it's business... thats why it's OUR business as people to fight for what IS fair.
We are not done yet, I would expect a 2nd crash.
