I had an idea. What if every business in America, large and small, created one new job? Imagine what that could mean to our country. Think about how many new jobs that might produce. I named the idea: One Job for America. And then my husband, Rich Silverstein, and I decided to try to make this real.

I'm not an economist or a politician or an academic or even a blogger (until now). So stepping forward like this and taking a chance is new for me. But I believe strongly in this idea and I honestly believe it will work. Because most of us feel frustrated and sad about the job situation in this country and we wish we could help. We wish we could do something about it because so far not much has been effective. The problem seems insurmountable. Seemingly, the best minds in the country have been able to do very little.

So here's a chance for all of us to step up and, in the very best sense of the word, take responsibility. Maybe a better way to say it is that One Job for America encourages us to be responsible citizens and it gives us hope that we can participate in making this a better world. We can come together, as members of a national community, and try to solve this problem one job at a time. That sounds manageable. It sounds possible, doesn't it? I realize it's a little Capraesque. I think we could use some of that kind of optimism right now.

I hope people won't politicize this idea or think of every possible reason that it might not work. All you have to do is log on to the website, OneJobForAmerica.org, and pledge to create one new job. And then, at a later date, come back and tell us what position you created and who you hired. It's a leap of faith, I know. But if you do this and tell someone else about it and they do it too and so on who knows what we can accomplish. Oh, for larger companies we hope that you'll think about doing this on a larger scale. The spirit is to generate new jobs. We want companies to start hiring again. And we want people to be hopeful again.

This is a simple idea on its face and yet I truly believe it has the possibility of being profound. So log on to the website. Make a pledge. Tell a friend. Together we will bring back jobs in America one by one.

Let's try everything. But that said, I think my idea of National Hiring Day, that I've been promoting throughout the country for months (200 posts on HP alone) is the better one. The One Job for America doesn't support corporations doing their fair share - instead it allows them to do a pittance and keep critics at bay for not doing enough to help their country. Compare with National Hiring Day: I 'd love to talk to Emil and compare ideas.

There is a solution to the jobs problem and it could quickly put hundreds of thousands of people back to work. It is not pro left or right. It is not from any corporation, it's outside the government control, it's totally voluntary, and helps all with little sacrifice from anyone.
National Hiring Day #2 is suggested for March 15,2011. This is a day that corporations are encouraged to hire new employees. Corporations are called on to put patriotism first and help their country in hard times. Those corporations that cannot hire, are asked to stop firing for that month. The day was suggested by the 18 year old Dallas art and media zine Musea.

Republicans should love this because it's outside the government and voluntary. Democrats should love this because it helps those needing jobs. Independents should love it because it helps all with little sacrifice from anyone corporation, group, or person.

work together, I think both ideas are great. but I hate to disappoint you, republicans won't like it, because it doesn't matter if it's voluntary, they don't want any pressure to do something good for the country, especially if the pressure is from PEOPLE. they just want to do what their corporations pay them to do, and hiring people is not something corporations want to do, that's is money that can line their pocket as profits and CEO, executive bonuses and vacations! lord help us if their profits aren't RECORD BREAKING, or less than it has been in any previous years.

Well, I understand your feelings, but let's let the corporations respond for themselves. They can turn their back on the country out in the open, or they can support it -

The first not to respond is the 100 media outlets I've sent the idea to! But if we can get the idea beyond a media that talks about jobs problems daily, but can't find room for this, then we will see.

Bottom line of greed is really bad business though. I for one, when I have a choice, will support those corporations that help out, and will stop supporting those that don't - that's my bottom line and the line of many many many Americans. Business it's up to you to help solve the problem or be a part of the problem.

I think there is a growing pressure from many who find this two part economy not quite fair anymore. You and I for example. Sadly the media has not responded - shows that they are on the corporate side more than the worker side - Strange that every media news show, talks about joblessnes s but they won't talk about National Hiring Day.
Kinda wonder how fair they really are.”

Republicans, sad to say, want the jobless rate to remain high so that President Obama will lose the next election. They will not like your idea at all.

You have a dream... a good one despite the fact, it may be tough to get there...

I admire your dream... don't lose hope for our country!

Someday, someone and many will realize our goal - "is our dream to come true"...
Tough roads ahead... but keep on truck'in

republican plan: 200,000 jobs lost. Boehner says "So be it", and returns to goal of passing even more tax cuts, which increases the deficit, increases the debt, reduces the ability of the govt to administrate, making govt less effective, which he'll simultaneously complain about AND predict, while making sure that it comes true!

Where are the jobs, Boehner?!

This is the National Hiring Day, an idea that's been talked about in Huffington Post in around 200 posts by Tom Hendricks over the last 2 months. And been sent as a news tip to HP two times.
This idea was called for originally by Musea zine, the 18 year old Dallas art and media zine.
There are some differences between the two ideas. Compare Emil's ideas with this

National Hiring Day #2 called for March 15, 2011. This posted some time back:
Robert Reich, You and other pundits talk about jobs daily but refuse to even mention National Hiring Day.
The main problem with jobs is the medias refusal to consider new ideas like National Hiring Day #2. There are solutions that are non political, and demand very little sacrifice from anyone. What it does is ask for a very very very very very small amount of voluntary patriotism from corporations.. The real job story is the media's refusal to talk about the first National Hiring Day in January 2011 - a good solution to spark the job recovery. That includes about 100 news shows that talk about jobs daily including HP.
National Hiring Day #2 is suggested for a month or two from now. This is a day that corporations are encouraged to hire new employees. Corporations are called on to put patriotism first and help their country in hard times. Those corporations that cannot hire, are asked to stop firing for that month. Let's say you run a small business, by hiring one person, you are a part of this. Many others hire one or more. Then because you (and others) hired one or more, thousands have gotten jobs, lost insecurity and worry, and are ready to buy from you and others. AND they have a good reason to support your company. Just one hire from enough small businesses and the whole country has a big boost. You help a little and get good will from thousands that find jobs, in return.

Carla Emil, how about acknowledging National Hiring Day.
For two months I've been telling HP about National Hiring Day #1 Jan. 2011, and #2 March 15 2011. See over 200 comments under my name Tom Hendricks.
Now I've read this blog by Carla Emil calling for the same thing under a different title
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/carla-emil/one-job-for-america_b_823486.html

Here is one version of my many posts under comments under my name on HP

How about talking about both ideas and giving some history of where the idea came from?
Let's work together, and make this a National Hiring Day or Week.

Some of these huge firms should hire proportionally to their size.  If a company with 35 employees hires one employee, then some of these behemoths should hire a thousand.  Recovery has to start with first steps.

Corporate profits are massive right now, while the country and its' people are drowning, and I have heard over and over that the larger corporations are sitting on almost $3 trillion in cash.  Sitting on that cash, making huge profits, giving huge bonuses to the management and continuing to harm the country and its' people is unpatriotic and firms which act in unpatriotic terms should be viewed in that manner and treated as such.

Ms Emile; please explain how businesses are going to provide one new job when; insurance thru Obamacare is going thru the roof, taxes are way too high, regulations way too cumbersome, gas too expensive and the Obama created depression makes selling products for a reasonable profit impossible. Not to mention the destruction of the south's biggest economic engine, oil exploration. You have just shown why America has no confidence or use for the liberal/Marxist and why it has failed everywhere it has existed. Stupid is as stupid sees..... duhhh huuuuh. Only government does this kind of idiotic nonsense, hence our huge government that is incapible of efficient use of tax dollars, hence high taxes, hence ( fill in the blank)
12:09 PM on 02/18/2011
You do remember that the market crashed while Bush was still in office, right? Remember how John McCain suspended his campaign in order deal with the economic collapse? So this depression wasn't created by our current President. Also, since you seem to be missing some facts, the healthcare program Obama helped create doesn't take effect until 2014. Insurance rates have gone up b/c insurance companies raised them out of fear of nationalize healthcare.
I realize based on your comment that you aren't all that interested in facts, but I thought I would present them to you anyway.

I love the faulty memories... Savings and Loans crisis = Republican... Wall Street Crash and BILLION dollar bail out + Republican. Enormous greed = Corporations.... Why... well we could start with Ronald Regan and deregulation of industries. So where has this gotten us... In California Blue Cross and Blue Shield have been trying to raise their rates for INDIVIDUALS, not group plan members, up to 56%. This has NOTHING to do with Obamacare.

If you want to know why average American are out of work or suffering, please do not look at Obama like he's responsible for this mess. He was brave to even want to take on the plethora of issues crippling this country.

I would recommend you Obamacare critics turn off Fox"News" and start teaching your children how to work VERY HARD in school... they should be learning (mastering, really) sciences, math, technology and engineering... if not... they should learn Mandarin or Hindi because that's the future of this world. The future is not here in America, where we are barely competing with the declining nations of Western Europe, unless we pull it together and start taking education seriously again.

Huff Post readers seem to be clueless about the role of business which is to make money by providing goods and services. Like many charities, businesses might make donations or sponsorships; but businesses do not put people on the payroll as an act of charity. It would make just as much sense if consumers voluntarily paid more for goods or buy stuff they don't need so that small businesses can keep an extra employee on the payroll. Keeping bodies on the payroll as an employment program exists primarily in government jobs; Japanese companies; and family businesses. I don't even think nonprofits would do this.

good point, but a point made for no reason. I think everyone knows the role of business is to make money. that's why it's smart and necessary to have people represent themselves and their interests, because they have to live their lives, because a life is not provided. in pursuing a persons own interests, this is how a union can be handy, because then you have better leverage as you can bargain collectively, which give your voice extra heft.

point being, corporations and business are ALWAYS going to be in the business of giving you only as much as they absolutely NEED to, while taking as MUCH as they possibly can, which is called their profit margin! the problem is, businesses use this profit margin to justify and brag amongst themselves and investors as proof of their success at suckering in as many people as possible into either/both working for less than they would otherwise be valued at given the value of their product of their labour and quantity of product sold for more than production costs in large numbers, which increases their income revenue over their costs of business.

don't you think it's fair to say that if a company has profits of 8%, it's not really fair to justify worker layoffs because it will raise their overall profit margin to 10%?, which is more attractive to investors? is that "fair" ? it's business... thats why it's OUR business as people to fight for what IS fair.

But that's precisely why these ideas are almost childish. No business is knowingly going to hire people just to have them sit around. As a group, they would all act as if the call is meant for someone else. It's as silly as asking business to just volunteer the taxes they feel are right.

WTF? Of course the role of business is to make money, but also many good businesses in decades past felt that they were contributing to society with their services or products. Now, big corporations only want to make money -- and KEEP IT FOR THEMSELVES. They are only interested in the big bonuses for the CEOs and top management. What is moral or justifiable about corporations giving out bigger bonuses than ever before while the masses are suffering?
09:21 PM on 02/17/2011
There are lots of jobs but mostly for IT, Nursing and development. If one of those is not in your skill set, forget it. Also, companies post jobs and never hire. The government is one of the worst at this.
We are not done yet, I would expect a 2nd crash.
