Sneaking Fitness Into Your Summer Plans

Posted: 06/07/2011 8:20 am

Summertime means bathing suits, short shorts and tank tops -- overall skimpier clothing. This means watching what we eat and even more importantly, working out. People always want to look toned and trim and, unfortunately, you have go the extra mile and add some extra spice to your workouts to achieve these goals.

This is hard to do on top of work, social engagements and travel -- especially over the summer while it's hot as Hades outside. It's important to establish a routine that you won't just quit once summer is over because it will be that much harder to get back on the horse when winter melts away next year. Sticking to a workout routine also keeps you from overeating or eating junk, because you're keeping yourself accountable. But since it's summer and we want to play outdoors more than be indoors running on a treadmill, here are a few things you can do that count as working out and still allow you to enjoy your summertime activities and travels.

Don't get caught up in the idea that the exercise has to be a consistent 30 minutes. Recreational activities can also be exercise and doing something is better than nothing. Ten minutes of exercise a few times a day will add up!

Whether you're heading to the lake, the ocean, the pool or the mountains this summer, try these tips to keep active.

Work your entire body while in rocky and mountainous terrain by pole hiking. The upper body motion really gets the heart rate going. You move with quicker, smaller steps, your arms are pumping and it's almost like race walking. Using poles allows you to involve the upper body in activity that normally works mainly the legs and glutes. It's a great way to add some intensity to your hiking.

I walk my dogs every morning.
Most of the walk is on flat land , but we have some hills we go up and down too.
Going up those hills sure is a great workout!

For those of us who work out 3-5 a week, we look forward to a "vacation" without daily workouts. That's what vacation means; time away from the normal and time to refresh. Not exactly what happens if you keep doing the same old exercise, eating at the same old resturants etc.
