What Does Autism Awareness Even Mean?

(26) Comments | Posted April 1, 2015 | 1:38 PM

April is Autism Awareness Month.

I'm not sure when this tradition started. Does anyone out there know? I would research it, but I'm in the middle of eating a huge, yummy cinnamon roll from Cinnabon and I don't feel like multi-tasking.

Me reí a carcajadas.

I Know What Causes Autism

Last week I was surfing the Internet and came across a headline proclaiming autism and circumcision are linked. I couldn't help myself. I laughed out loud.

In no certain order, I have read the following explanations for autism over the years:

Autism is caused by mercury.

Autism is caused by...

"Hey Carrie, it's me, Sandy. Listen, I had an idea for you --"

Sandy is a dog trainer. We started to work with her after we got our new puppy, Wolfie, because we have no idea what we're doing.

"Oh, I'm so glad you called! I'm kind of...

Last Friday was my son Jack's tenth birthday. Jack has autism, and as you can imagine, there was lots of excitement surrounding this milestone, lots of planning and playlist-making and cake research. He even smirked and said that since he was turning double digits, maybe he should have two cakes....

When Your Grandchild Has Autism

(3) Comments | Posted March 29, 2014 | 7:24 AM

I'm always struck at the number of grandparents who turn up at my readings. During the discussion afterwards, they usually ask similar questions; "I have a granddaughter with autism. What should I do when she flaps her hands?" or, "Why do the tags on his sweater bother him...

How Do I Tell My Son Everything About His Autism?

So, we've got this guy in middle school now. And he is all sorts of cool. Savvy. Phrases like let's play have been replaced by let's hang out. He makes egg sandwiches for himself in the morning and wants to walk home from the bus stop alone in the afternoon....

Right now I'm sitting in a hospital.

I am waiting for my husband, Joe. He is gowned and unconscious, undergoing a surgery called a discectomy, where they cut a teeny tiny hole in his lower back and shave away the bulging disc that's been infringing on his sciatic nerve...
