Defending Obama's NCAA Picks and Leno Appearance

Barack Obama has been under a lot of criticism for his NCAA picks and his appearance on Leno. People have criticized him for spending too much time on his his NCAA picks and his Leno appearance while not focusing enough on the economy.

Anybody who's been following Obama's presidency has seen how active he has been. He posts his daily schedule every day and seems to have put enough work for himself on his plate. All presidents have had hobbies, whether it be golf, sailing or stamp collecting. There has never been a president who devoted all of their time to being President and rightfully so. I filled out my bracket in 5 minutes and I doubt Obama canceled any budget meeting to fill out his bracket.

Millions of hardworking people fill out March Madness brackets every year. Its nice to think of Obama as regular American guy with regular habits despite his extraordinary responsibilities.

Where was the outrage when President Bush took 166 vacation days in his first three years despite 9/11 and the Iraq war? What about when his dad took 543 vacation days in his 4 year term? What about when Bush's football watching habit became so bad he choked on a pretzel?

Barack Obama has already shown a very disciplined work ethic that he has applied to both his presidential campaign and his 2 months tenure as president. The fact is that he took 5 minutes out of his schedule to take part in what has become an American workplace tradition.

I'm also disturbed to see the amount of criticism Obama has received for going on Leno. I thought it as a great move for Obama to speak to the nation about the economy in an informal way to the country. Many presidents before have appeared on Meet the Press before which gives the opportunity for political nerds like me to see what is going on with our commander in chief but by appearing on Leno, Obama had the chance to address the whole nation and discuss very important issues to Americans who might not watch Sunday morning talk shows. Obama was not wasting time on Leno but for the most part discussing serious political issues that concern the nation.

Where was the outrage when George Bush appeared on the Rush Limbaugh show? Rush is a sexist, racist bigot who has managed to offend 3/4 of the country and Bush appeared on his show several times while president. If Bush can appear on the show of a partisan racist hack like Limbaugh, surely Obama can talk about the economy on Leno.

George Bush famously did not give many interviews to the press and was able to avoid media scrutiny about his actions. It's good to see Obama opening himself up to questions on his intentions for the country. One of the great things about Barack Obama is how he was able to make people who didn't pay close attention to politics pay more attention. By appearing on Leno and disclosing his NCAA picks Obama is continuing to do that.

Oh, joy! We will get to listen to this for eight years, just like with the Clintons, although I do think the Obama's have a higher moral compass. And the MSM is worthless, except for Rachel Maddow.
Ever heard the expression "they wouldn't be happy if you hung them with a new rope"? Sounds like rethugs to me!

let's us look at who behind the criticism.

sen. conryn criticizes prez obama for going on leno. this is the same sen that missed the stimulus vote so he could go to new york for a fundraising dinner.

sen. alexander criticizes prez obama for filling out the ncaa bracket. where where sen. alexander when prez bush sat on his behind for several months without doing anything about the financial crisis? not to mention prez bush months of vacation.

let's face it: these are petty criticisms by petty gop operatives, the same people who have ruined our country for the last 8 years. what have they done constructively for our country? nothing! what a bunch of hypocrites.

I'm possessed by March Madness and have been for 40 years. A friend and I talked yesterday how cool it is that we have a President who actually has a life outside of the oval office. Bush certainly never appeared human to me. And Laura? Look how much Ms. Obama has done in two months!
I'm proud of our first family..for the first time in a long time.

Entertainment and sports are healthy. Our problem is that we so caught up in economic crisis that it is pushing people down even more. I think it is good that the President is leading the way to a balance in our lives. More laughs please. The doom and gloom media is choking the American people.
09:55 AM on 03/22/2009
First he needs to do the job he was elected to do. He can lead us to a healthy economy then he can lead us to laughs. Seriously, let's take care of business first. More of us would lighten up if we felt he and his administration had a clue and were doing something that would actually help our lives be better. We're laughing enough right now. We need to be working and paying bills.

Sorry, but President Obama IS doing the job he was sent to do. He has been in office for TWO Months and already, stimulus money is flowing. He has had to battle Republicans every step of the way while ;istening to them take credit. President Obama promised us that he would keep us informed about what he was doing and why. He has had 4 or 5 town meetings, and is getting ready for his 2nd national press conference. He has been interviewed by most of the major outlets and is on 60 minutes again tonight. He appeared on Leno because it WAS an informal way to talk about what he's doing. Nowhere has he sounded like a talking head. President Bush HID from the American public. I much prefer being able to see and hear my president. And by the way, where does his job description say he is not allowed to have a little rest and relaxation, too. After all, the man is on call 24/7, 365. Cut him a BREAK!

Dude. Seriously, you can't see that our President is working his butt off for us? Maybe opening your eyes would help.

He gives the PM of Great Brittan a CD collection and his opponents accuse him of having "no class". They dye the fountains of the White House green to honor Irish Americans and they say its "tacky". He takes a few minutes to participate in a sports "thing" (of which I have no clue about) and they come out telling him he needs to "concentrate on the economy and not on b-ball!". He goes on the Tonight Show and people accuse him of "slacking". A month before, they accused him of "doing too much".

"No class"
"Tacky"
"B-Ball freak"
"Slacker"
"Doing too much"

Yes, right wing America, I hear you loud and clear. We are taking notes and not checking your names at the voting booths. Keep it up, back asswards, hicks. Keep relying on your southern strategy. it seems to be working very well for us.

Amen!! As a bi-partisan voter, or independent as I think we are called these days, I have sat and watched the hypocrisy and ignorance grow in the Republican party to outlandish levels. So much so that I will vote a straight Democratic ticket in the future.

There are a couple of exceptions such as my alderman, who is an "old school" Republican who I adore, and my county coroner (why does a coroner have to dictate a party anyways??). The rest can kiss my beautiful red, white, and blue bottom until they actually do something other than spew hate language, spin outlandish lies, and twist the truth. I'm fed up with it!!

On a nicer note, I do think it is quite cool to actually WANT to see my President more often and know that he is real enough to appear on Leno and want to make basketball picks. It's not below the office - it's connecting with the American people. Remember, this was all about US.

and, oddly enough, wasn't that Alaska gal's evocation of 'joe sixpack' that sparked her appeal among the diehard 'real' americans?

in bad moments i think of what might be happening if she were pallin' around with those washington folks now.

I've come to the realization (after 60 days of watching a president who for the first time since I've been old enough to vote, who actually works for the people and is trying to repair a broken economy that has more cracks than a mirror dropped from 12 feet onto concrete) that the president could invent a cure for HIV and some would blast him for not inventing a cure for xyz first.

I can't believe that anyone is upset with a president having a little fun. President Obama has already done more good in 2 months than Bush did in 8 years. In those 8 years a total of 3 years were spent in Texas and probably another at camp david or simply doing nothing. So we had a one term president that ruined America and the World and it only took 4 years. Wow -

Why listen to the Republicans whine when they have no new ideas?
08:52 PM on 03/22/2009
i think that is why they whine, because they have no new idea. they just want to cut: cut taxes for the greedy, cut healthy care, cut social security, cut unemployment benefits, cut, cut, cut.
08:16 PM on 03/21/2009
Appearing on Leno was part of his job. Movie stars go on to promote their movies and he went on to promote his economic package.

As for filling out his brackets... is there an office in America where people don't fill out their brackets? He works in an office, so why shouldn't he do it too.
06:28 PM on 03/21/2009
Please stop defending Obama with the argument "George Bush did something similar". Those are not the standards we need to be going by.

I don't think there's any comparison being made here between Bush and Obama. What I am reading is a clear CONTRAST-- "Obama is working--Bush was not."

This is all so ridiculous. Who here works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? I don't see any hands flying up our there.

Maybe we shouldn't let the president sleep or eat dinner, either. We can pump him up on some caffeine pills and feed him intravenously. Then pry his eyelids open like they did to Alex in A Clockwork Orange. I bet he'd be able to solve the financial crisis in like 3 days if we forced him to do that!

A nation of ignoramuses, I say.
08:27 PM on 03/21/2009
Exactly! If President Obama worked 24/7 he would burn out in no time. My husband is a hard worker, and he filled out his bracket too. We have been watching basketball all weekend.
07:42 PM on 03/21/2009
Thank you! Too many on here think that as long as he's doing better than W, it is fine. I have much higher standards for our president than that and I would expect everyone else to, too.
08:50 PM on 03/21/2009
All Obama has to do is BREATHE and he is doing better than W.

It's also important to remind repubs who insist on RE-writing history about the FACTS, and until repubs accept the TRUTH, Dubya's antics will be commented on.

If we leave it to the repubs, Dubya would be portrayed as the 2nd coming.
05:53 PM on 03/21/2009
I beg to differ.

Remeber Don Imus' Comment?

Obama said: “He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women — who I hope will be athletes — that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It’s one that I’m not interested in supporting.”

Therefore, the lack of reaction from Obama’s remarks suggest Americans have a set a rules for race, class and gender: If you touch them you will pay.

And another set of rules for individuals that have a mental or physical disability: If you touch them, it’s ok if you appologize. Oh, and by the way, it’s okay to laugh at the jokes that come at the expense of the latter.

It is just cruel.

I too, think he messed up wit that comment, but I have actually said something similar without thinking. I know that he deeply cares about those less fortunate, but only when we all walk on water can we judge, right?
01:12 AM on 03/22/2009
I agree about it being OK to joke about people with disabilities. It hurts. The disabled person is already suffering with the disability, then they suffer ostracism, then they are made fun of. Lots of injury there. I think Obama is basically a good person although he showed a side I had not seen before. I believe he will make amends for his comment.

"If Bush can appear on the show of a partisan racist hack like Limbaugh, surely Obama can talk about the economy on Leno." I like that. Thanks Casey. Your piece is bang-on.

casey: I totally agree with you. MSM needs someone to fill up their time slots soPresident Obama is the person. No matter what he does or says it is picked apart for days and weeks. MSM has turned me off.. I now get my info from my computer. No one is filling my head up with garbage., and that is exactly what the MSM does each day, beat a story to death.
