Big Bang Theory: Are Amy and Bernadette Helping or Hurting the Series?

Posted: 01/18/12 11:33 AM ET

What's going on with the Big Bang Theory these days? I understand a show needs to branch out out from the regular cast and bring on a few supporting characters and/or love interests. When Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik were cast as Bernadette and Amy, I didn't mind at first. It was about time Howard's desperate and borderline creepy attempts at love actually amounted to something and the addition of Amy as a girlfriend (of sorts) for Sheldon had the potential to bring a new dimension to the Sheldon we've always known and loved.

But now that they've been around for a while, I'm kind of sick of them. While Amy has introduced a few (however minor) feelings in Sheldon, a recent episode proved that he still largely cares only about himself. When she told him about her paper being published, he was dismissive of her and her field, despite previous boasting about her intelligence. His apology gift wasn't even based on real remorse (although I admit her reaction to the tiara was funny). Sheldon still appears stilted. Will he ever change at all? And if not, what's the point of Amy? Is it just for her to make awkward jokes about Penny's beauty all the time? Personally I think they should have given her a few more dates with Stewart to finally give the girl more to do; maybe then I'd care more about her.

As for Bernadette and Howard, they are becoming boring for me. Howard is as stilted as Sheldon: Still living at home, still living under the thumb of his invisible mother, unwilling to change or move out. Last week's episode revealed that Bernadette hates kids. While interesting and a little amusing, the birthday party wasn't as funny as I was hoping. Bernadette's anger seemed too quick and overdone. But I'm interested in the resolution at the end of the episode: Howard will stay home and raise their future kids while Bernadette works and makes the money -- will that hold up? Will they even get that far? Can Howard give up engineering for his future children? That would be a big change for a character that hasn't compromised very much so far.

With the ushering in of these new characters, I also find myself missing the days of Sheldon, Raj, Howard, Leonard and Penny sitting around, eating their usual takeout with their usual banter. It's been so long since we've seen an interaction with all of the guys and Penny without Amy or Bernadette present. Even Raj seems to have been relegated to a supporting character with these new ladies around. When was the last time they gave that guy a real love interest or story arc? The last thing I can think of was his crush on Bernadette, and even that didn't amount to very much.

Also, the writers need to give Penny more to do than drinking all the time and looking awkward next to Amy's weird compliments. They haven't given her another acting job or even another love interest in so long. I'm as happy as anyone that this week's episode teases a return to the possibility of Leonard and Penny, I just hope they do it right. My favourite Penny moments are when she's figuring things out with Leonard or verbally sparring with Sheldon.

The first few seasons of Big Bang had me laughing out loud, even when watching alone, but I've started to watch it in the background as I do other things. I hope they find a way back to what I consider the core of the show, which is the guys' relationship with each other and with Penny.

But I put it to you, Big Bang fans, am I wrong? Do you like Amy and/or Bernadette? Did you enjoy the first new episode of the new year?

I definitely agree with this article. Amy is just another, more perverted (bisexual?) less funny version of Sheldon that makes him act much less funny. Bernadette reminds me of a Hannah Montana character and plus Howard could never really score with/keep a girl that easily...at least, not according to his original character. Raj should be brough back up as a main character, it was much more funny when him and Howard were off doing their little side story while the main one revolved around Leonard or Sheldon.
Also, the original point of the show was that it was a bunch of nerdy guys who just so happened to be lucky enough to hang out with Penny and try their luck with her. Now all that Penny does is pine about Leonard and hang out with Amy and Bernadette, two things that she would really be too cool for. The show has become too big for its britches; it's no longer about nerds and their awkward relationship with the pretty girl but instead it's become too confident in its characters and just tries to make them interact normally like they do on Friends. I still like it and watch it but it's already coming to an end because they ran out of ideas and had to introduce new characters after so few seasons. What next, Howard and Bernadette have kids? At this point, I kind of want a quick, painless death for tBBT

Count me in with those who like Amy and Bernadette. Many of my favorite moments from Season 4 and 5 involve Amy and Sheldon. I have to disagree with your assessment that Sheldon is not changing. I think it is pretty obvious that he IS changing, but he still being true to himself. If you can't see that he has a soft spot for Amy, then you just don't WANT to see it.

I love Bernadette and Amy. It's awesome that the show has some smart chicks. I think when it was just the smart guys and the ditzy blonde next door it was a bit more stereotypical. The fact that there are now girl-nerds is awesome! Also, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch are both hilarious and bring a lot to the show. Jim Parsons carried the show big time the first few seasons, and I think the edition of Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch (Amy and Bernadette) have really improved the non-Sheldon scenes in the show.

I love the expansion of the cast and really love Bernadette and Amy. Amy is so funny and so atypical; she's a great comedienne and is so nerdy in her own right, yet so vulnerable. I see Big Bang as the new Friends and of course the evolution (or not) of the characters and their relationships are what is fascinating. Bernadette is so like a mother replacement for Leonard, even her voice, that everyone can see how the marriage will develop. I guess again I come down on the side of loving the expanding cast.

One of the strengths of Big Bang is the supporting cast. Not just Bernadette and Amy, but characters like Kripke, and the comic book store owner. Sheldon and Leonards mothers are always good. I also liked Pennys boyfriend (from the Justice League episode).

I don't mind Bernadette too much, but I cannot stand Amy. She is too much like Sheldon, for him to ever really feel for someone, that person would have to tap something inside unlike him. Someone a little like him but also more emotional and able to open him up. I wonder why they even did it, Sheldon was ok as he was. Why not make him gay, that would even be interesting. And why not have a woman be into Comics and Sci-fi? To be more like the guys, as I am, instead of the girls. I hope Amy gets lost sometime. Contrast the Hug in the next to last show of Amy, to the one when Sheldon hugged Penny after he got the Nimoy autograph. The latter was real and touching, the former was forced, no warmth. Bernadette can stay, but not be in each show, but Amy has to go.

Bring Dr. Leslie Winkle back. She is perfect for Sheldon--a horny intellectual. If Amy can't get Sheldon to have sex then I'll betcha Leslie can. And wouldn't that be hilarious!

I like the addition of Bernadette and Amy. I have to wonder about people who wish the show would go back to what is was in Seasons 1-3 and not have the characters change. Um..., if that's what you want, then go watch the 3 seasons of Gilligan's Island - those characters never grew or changed and it could only make it for 3 seasons.

To me, the show is a "coming of age" show for a group of guys whose intellectual growth far outstripped their emotional growth, and now we get to see their emotional side catch up. It's kind of a hopeful message to the rest of us nerds and geeks.

I fond the women very irritating.
I didn't mind Amy when she appeared only once every two epidodes, and had great nerdy/Aspy conversations with Sheldon. it was even funny to have her hanging out a bit with the other girls and be clueless about what was going on.
Now, she's too much.
As for Bernadette, I never really cared for her, and my opinion doesn't change. she interferes too much with Howard and Raj's "plaronic" bromance.
I want to see more of Penny interacting with Sheldon and Leonard. I want the awesome banter and the killer one-liners back!

I think there is plenty of room for everyone in the current cast of characters to thrive and grow moving forward. That being said, some of my favorite memories of this show are of Raj and unattached Howard receiving extended air time. I love Bernadette and Howard together so it pains me to entertain the idea of a beneficial break up to preserve the comedy and structure of the series. I just have a feeling that a wedding would be too much of a "jumping the shark situation".

I've been digging Howard & Bernadette more and more this season. I love the "Howard's mother" character, and how Bernadette sounds just like her once they get going, it's hilarious. Meanwhile, any scene with Leonard I wish would hurry up and get over.

How could Amy and Bernadette be hurting the show when it's never been more popular with viewers? If anything, Bernadette is under utilized. After all - her character and Howard's are the first to be planning a wedding - TONS of story opps there!

I don't mind the girls; although I wish they would lay off Amy's come-ons to Penny; they are weird and creepy. Please have Bernie grow a spine and tell Howard to get off his ass and cut his own damn meat. This is the 21st century, she's a career woman, not his serving maid.

I agree with other posters; I find it's the lack of character development of the guys that's annoying me (save Leonard).

Sheldon especially is beginning to grate. A character who is "eccentric" can often cross the line and become annoying . Sheldon, as far as I am concerned, is skating right up to that line.

It's sloppy writing; after 4 seasons, they should be much more well-rounded. And can we please get some progress with Raj as well?

I personally would like to see Leonard win a prestigious award that Sheldon was expecting to win, and so take down Sheldon's ego. That might be a learning experience. And if Howard moved out and got his own place, I might think he and Bernie had a chance.

Speaking of Bernadette, I really hope they don't go the old "she thought she didn't want kids but then discovered being pregnant was the best, etc., etc." Not every woman dreams of motherhood. I know I never did, and I've never regretted not having children.

I think the show just keeps on getting better with every episode. Everyone of the cast members are doing a great job. just let it go and ride the wave it is on, instead of trying to put a damper on a great show!!!!!
