What About The White Guys?

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

As they analyze the Democratic primaries, pundits focus on women, African Americans and Latinos. What about the white male? In the privacy of the voting booth, where will the white men go in November? Hillary Clinton should be worried.

Look at the match-ups. Examine Democratic and Independent voters. Democratic women are not going to abandon their party regardless of the nominee. Nor will Latinos. African Americans may lose some enthusiasm without Obama. Young people, notorious for sitting on the sidelines, may as well. But what about white men? When given the choice between Clinton and McCain, I believe many moderate and conservative Democrat/Independent males will vote for the old soldier. His narrative, the maverick aviator, speaks to them. That may not be true if Obama is on the ballot. As he gains support among white males, the exit polls show the real hidden bias may be gender, not race.

As we examine shifting alliances and lay bets on the general election, my swing vote is the Democrat/Independent white male. To paraphrase Abigail Adams, "don't forget the laddies".

Oh, deluded worldlings. Oh fair hearts. You know....? We now have the technology to trim the number of males born. The planet can no longer afford men if men can not control their self-destructive impulses.

Because, me laddies, war is the ultimate enviromental disaster.

We whine and sentimentalize dogs and cats while we kill every songbird in the heart of the birthplace of man. And...if you want to talk about what the media will not face...? Let's talk about the depleted uranium we are dumping all over Irag.

And it is the "laddies", oh yes indeedeee.

Not talking about abortion here. No. Even though millions, MILLIONS if girl babies go down the drain all over the world. No. We have the hormonal means to make some pan-sexuals out of what starts as male. Let's do the sane, humane thing, girls. I need some of that Hollywood money to set up a clinic. Only half kidding here.

I think that Judge Crier is quite wise in suggesting that Dem/Indy white males may go for "the old soldier," despite that he is clearly and precisely what this country and the world do not need at this time (none of the GOP are required at this time, for our collective salvation.) We Americans would benefit if our national catechism were amended to include study of "false masculinity" as a poison for we American males (and males the world over, really). Read Jeff Marx, his book Season Of Life, for the basics of this viewpoint; that from our earliest days we are socialized to eventually seek to dominate in physical, economic, and sexual spheres, and to feel ourselves small and as failures to the extent that we fail as these false masculines (while beneath it all is a sense of inherent shame and insufficiency to begin with.) That the "old soldier" or "young Blackwater" or "stud" et al. images would draw the affectionate attention of otherwise intelligent American men may be due to our national affliction (false masculinity) and its impacts on our choices. McCain has a record that marks him as a so-so national leader at best, and his recent proclamations place him at odds with our chances for survival. But he was a soldier. Yeah, so? He got tortured. Yeah, so? That makes him a real man, and I will be one, too, if I vote for him, right? Wrong. Choose not McCain, no matter how much you delusionally wish that you were Superman or Jessie The Body, or some other fictional character who you might wish to be in order to be "real" and acceptable. I'll hold my nose and vote for either Hillary or Barack, since my favoite choices were among Biden, Dodd, or Edwards, and I won't fall for the lure that I can align myself with glory by voting for a "war hero." The essential quals for President do not include having been either a veteran or a POW.

Let's trust the one with wisdom and courage, who carries with him clear vision, good judgment, and universal truth!

Here's Senator Obama's insightful speech on October 2, 2002 opposing the use of force in Iraq...

"... The consequences of war are dire, the sacrifices immeasurable. We may have occasion in our lifetime to once again rise up in defense of our freedom, and pay the wages of war.

But we ought not - we will not - travel down that hellish path blindly. Nor should we allow those who would march off and pay the ultimate sacrifice, who would prove the full measure of devotion with their blood, to make such an awful sacrifice in vain."

About 25% of my meetup group for Ron Paul is female. Of those, at least half are former Democrats.

You are so right. My son was telling me about 5 of his teacher colleagues all Democrats who said if Hillary is the nominee, they will vote for McCain. If Obama is the nominee they will vote for him.

On the other side they said if Huckabee is the nominee they will be ABH (Anybody but Huckabee).

I asked my son , how could they vote for McCain, their reasoning , "he's not as bad as Bush'.

As for me, this woman is voting Obama next Tuesday in Virginia.

GOBAMA!!!

Why do we always have to be evaluated by demographics? Since I am a male, is my vote for Obama automatically a gender driven decision? Is my vote for Hillary automatically a racial choice? I think neither is accurate. If I vote against Hillary it is because I do not want the Clinton baggage in the White House and I do not trust Bill to play the First Spouse role like every first Spouse until this point. If I vote against Obama it is because I am uncertain with regard to his consistency given his short track record. McCain is difficult to vote for because he does not talk about ending the commitment in Iraq and the never been conquered Afganistan.

What if I like Obama because of his optimism and optimism is important to me? What if I believe that Hillary will be more pragmatic about withdrawing from iraq than Obama but will get out? My whiteness has nothing to do with that decision. My maleness has nothing to do with that decision. but my vote is going to be classified as a white, male in the South.

Ok, so if I vote McCain I am rascist and sexist. If I vote Obama, I am sexist. If I vote Hillary I am rascist.

Interesting how everyone blames white guys as if its all our fault. Plenty of us voted against the war authorization, unlike Hillary. Plenty of us support womens rights and are against rascism... but I guess that doesn't matter if you are a woman or of some other ethnic background. I didn't vote for Bushco but plenty of you did.

I am an Independant and if Hillary had character and principles she might get my vote. Her explanation of the War authorization vote and her general attention on career politics over principles repels me.

If Obama or Hillary decide to hold Cheney and co accountable for their crimes, either could get my vote though neither have said a word about it.

If Obama continues to offer a consistently principled message, he could get my vote.

If McCain turns into a flower wearing hippy and declares the Iraq war to be the failure it is and offers to get us the hell out of there, I might vote for him.

The Dems and Republicans both assume that as an Independant, I am a Democrat and the efforts that both parties have gone to in order to eliminate choices of principled people like Kucinich as well as their drive to crush any hope of a viable third party makes me disgusted enough to not want to vote.

I have no idea why you think that a war monger like McCain would hold the slightest attraction. Maybe because boys like jets and playing soldier in our cardboard forts?

That combined with this feminist, rascist "lets hate on white guys" bullshit makes me want to stay home and give the country and "pundits" like you the finger.

As if I don't care about women's rights, as if I am not offended to the core by the NeoCon junta that has taken over our government and the gutless response by our elected officials. You people are really awful.

You are right on. My husband is a Barack supporter and he made a serious decision. He will not vote for Hillary if she is the nominee.

So now it's gender! If the white male votes Obama then they are sexist. So the argument that we vote for a candidate with convincing ideas and persona is just a decoy to portrait this species as reactionary and status quo foot soldiers. That makes their choice the lesser evil of two choice. Funny, but this election is anything but a typecast vote. It is really not what comes first: gender and then race and vice verso. No. It is about social changes. A change that is long over due. Since in the US anything that sounds like society in the sense of equality is banned from discussion and the old guard of cold war warriors still run the Country, the white powerless men are for change. They have nothing to due with gender politics that has become the comfort pillow of the white alpha predator (mostly Republican anyway) male. Class warfare like the USSR is so last century. The subject was so taboo. There is change in the air, no matter what happens on the Republican or Democratic side. It has more to do with the US deciding between the Anglo American or the African American culture and not race. A President Clinton would still represent the old, a President Obama would make the United States what it has been since it's inception: A country for everybody, a society that finally declared independence form Britain.

Well, I am a white middle-aged male. I voted for Obama yesterday. So, I guess I am enlightened as far as race goes, but a neanderthal as far as gender goes. Or maybe, just maybe - I find Barack to be the better candidate?

This whole excruciating debate is crazy. Obama is UNTESTED and HAS NEVER STOOD UP FOR PROGRESSIVE VALUES. He's all over Hillary for Kyl-Liebermann (Iran) but he couldn't be bothered to show up and vote. He SUPPORTED Liebermann over Lamont and Lamont campaigns for him. Rarely have so many been so duped.

I am a white male, College Educated, Progressive, Veteran, born in the north but living in Red State America.
When John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich left the race I ran out of viable candidates and plan on not voting or voting Green on Election Day in November.

Living in Arkansas, I know more than enough about Billary and would not vote for her, work for her election or donate to her campaign even if it meant 4 more years of Bush. I do not wish to see political dynasties in national politics. We already have a Senator, Mark Pryor (DINO), that is mainly there because of name recognition from his father- former Governor and Senator David Pryor. No more Bush or Clnton family members need apply for my vote.

I would really like to support Obama, but see him as too DLC (Republican-Lite), too corporatist, too green and way too willing to compromise with the NeoCons. I do not buy the 'most liberal Senator' ranking BS. If he is the most liberal Senator we are in trouble as a nation.

McCain is out of the question. The Republicans have burned all their bridges with me on their lock-step support of the Bush assault on the Constitution and unquestioning support of his war for oil and profit. An "R" behind a candidate's name on a ballot makes them an automatic hell-no.

If I have to 'throw away' my vote to protest the non-choice we have in November, then so be it. I will not vote for a Blue-Tick Democrat, a DLC-type Democrat or any Republican. That way I will be able to sleep at night.

This White male will be voting on character, believability, For what is right, and what is good, I too, am not opposed to fighting all wars, just dumb wars, and both Hillary and McCain have shown their propensity to be manipulated by the beat of nationalism and patriotism under the guise of preserving freedom, when what's really at stake is resources; Oil, Property, and Power. My vote, if I have to write it in, is Barack Obama. And the America people decide differently, and want to continue down the same path, and keep digging a deeper hole, then I will have to leave you idiots to your own demise. We continually consume 6% more than we produce, anybody who thinks they have any wealth in American Dollars, is kidding themselves. The dollar is worthless, and if we don't bring our country back, you can forget the Constitution. It will be worthless with a bankrupted economy, government, and military.
