Catherine Pearson: My Workday On The Treadmill Desk

When I got off the TreadDesk at 5:30 p.m. yesterday -- stuffed with self-importance and indignation at having spent the entire day ON MY FEET -- I was fully prepared to summarize my experience thusly: I hate you, treadmill desk.

But cooler heads prevailed, and my editors suggested taking a night to sleep on things. Which brings me to my next-afternoon take, which is: I still hate you treadmill desk, only slightly less.

But before I kvetch, a bit on my fitness background.

I'm a former jock, turned sloth, and in the five years since college I have been a sporadic exerciser at best. I'll jog, do yoga and for a brief stint, I played in a co-ed soccer league. These days I'm running, trying to get back in shape for what I hope will be my first half marathon this fall. We'll see.

What I do fancy myself is something of a walker, in so far as I have lived in New York City for nine years and the city demands that you get out and use your legs. I appreciate that. It gives me a time to think and take a few deep breaths. Present crabbiness aside, I also think it makes me less cranky.

What walking doesn't make me, it turns out, is a better journalist, for reasons I think could apply to a lot of people who also have desk-centric jobs. Simply put, doing stuff was tough during my trial, which ran from around 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and included a seated lunch break and multiple coffee runs. Among the tasks I struggled with:

1) Trying to type notes, not drop the phone and not fall off the treadmill while interviewing a source for a story.

3) Writing notes and outlining stories in my notebook, by hand. Surprisingly, the physical task of writing was the most difficult thing -- even when I slowed down, I wound up walking all wonky and sideways and tripping over myself.

And that was my biggest beef with the treadmill desk -- the logistics of it. I grant that there was a phone headset that would have helped and that I didn't notice until it was too late, but it wasn't just the phone that was the issue. I found it tough to do a lot of things -- drink water, eat food, talk and type -- all while keeping up my pace. Consider it a humbling exercise for someone who's always thought herself a multi-tasker.

Physically, I felt -- and still feel -- pretty good. My hamstrings are a little sore today and in the last hour yesterday, my lower back began to ache. I think that has to do with the fact that I was increasingly schlumped over the bean-shaped desk as the day wore on, using my elbows to prop myself up while I typed. (Come to think of it, my elbows are a little sore too.) But frankly, my back doesn't feel so hot right now and I've been sitting on my duff all day long. And on a more positive note, I fell asleep in, like, six seconds last night and slept like a baby.

Mentally, I felt -- and still feel -- pretty good, too, like I accomplished something extra and with no comfy chair to daze (or doze) off in, I think I was actually more mentally focused throughout the day. But I never did get into that zone where I forgot I was walking. I wasn't aware of every step, but I was fighting the feeling that I just wanted to SIT DOWN.

All told, the TreadDesk reported that I walked 6.76 miles and burned 616 calories -- though 43 minutes in I may or may not have momentarily broken the machine, meaning my first jaunt wasn't accounted for. Also, as fitness editor Sara Gaynes and I discussed; the machine's calorie counts seem a wee bit generous, particularly given my poky 1.5 mph pace.

Am I itching to get on the TreadDesk again? No I am not. I might hop on it for an hour on a day like today where it's now 5:07 p.m. and I feel that strange end-of-day combo of restless, jittery and tired. I mean, maybe. But probably not.

I have a home made treadmill desk. (old treadmill, old table top reconfigured) and I absolutely LOVE it. I too went from teaching, on my feet all day to sitting for a marketing job and began to gain a few pounds every year. Plus, sitting is hard on the back.

I walk off and on, throughout the day and average 500 calories a day. Not so much that I can't still wear cute outfits to work. I lose a pound a week.

I stick 1 mph and can type, chat, send email and talk on phone. Plus, I'm at a 3 % incline.

I think every sedentary worker who wants one should have one of these things. Our healthcare system would benefit and so would society.

AND, I don't have to make time to exercise after or before work. Win/Win!

I am baffled by the lack of logicby trying to cure one ill with an equally but unrelated one.Why would walking briskly all day on a treadmill be any better for you than sitting all day? Both are abnormal.What is it your are trying to replace? If it is the calories burnt per day there are more painless ways of doing that. Standing continuously is closer to the answer but also physiologically damaging, though at least you could work at the same time. The key signal that is removed by sitting for long stretches of time is that of multiple posture changes. Instead of going to painful extremes use your favorite chair but set an alarm to prod you to stand up every 20 or 30 minutes. It is just as effective and with every change gets blood up to your brain as well.

I'd probably last 3 minutes, get winded, and awfully tired very quickly. It's tough when you let yourself go, but my upcoming barriatric surgery will take care of that problem. It's a whole different way of life, got to make it work.

As someone who uses a similar product (Trek Desk) and has logged nearly 400 miles on it, one of the absolute keys to a good experience is having a headset or speaker phone. Otherwise, your entire posture is twisted. In addition, I found that elevating the computer keyboard to the correct height (4-6") above the desk makes typing very easy. Essentially a desk is a tool and like any tool, it needs to used correctly. As far as signing things go, I sign 25,000 documents in 8 months (sadly true). It took a little practice, but I was able to keep my signature legible. Give the desk another try!

What a great idea for folks chained to a desk all day. Our health system might see a few less people with cardio-vascular problems, diabetes and obesity.

It's not an all or nothing thing. You shouldn't go from nothing to 7 hours on a tread desk. Even though you think you walk alot the shorter strides will wear on your hamstrings so you need to ease into it.

Also, you don't have to do everything on the treaddesk, eat your lunch just standing or go sit down for 10 minutes and enjoy. I'd also advise starting out at 1.0 MPH and working up after your adjusted to it. If you consider yourself a failure for not doing the whole day you'll quit after a week.

Be happy if you get 1-2 hours a day to start. That's a lot better than you've been doing, just don't go too crazy the first few weeks :)

I work on my feet and walk all day, get a fifteen minute break every 2 hours, and a one hour lunch break. It hurts to press the accelerator while driving home at the end of an eight hour shift, so I use cruise control whenever I can. While walking all day, I use the phone, answer pages, take notes, help customers, and enter data into my mobile inventory checking device. Admittedly, drinking and walking is difficult, so I keep a container of water or sports drink with me in a container with a straw. I am 54 years old, and have never been in better shape in my life (except when I was in my 20's and took 5 aerobics classes a week). You can do this!!!!! Keep up the good work. However, if you will, please try to avoid using the superfluous term "like" in your writing. It diminishes your professionalism. Sweet Dreams tired and faithful servant...

I recently transitioned to a standing desk. I was a bank teller for many years and then I was a teacher--both professions where standing on the job for 6-8 hours a day is the norm. When I began working in technology two years ago, it was the first job I have ever had where I sat all day long. I gained 9 pounds over the course of two years and I believe sitting is the major contributor as my diet and exercise habits have remained the same. About two months ago I transitioned my sitting desk to a standing desk and things are going great. The first 72 hours were rough, but by the second week it felt normal. I actually have a lot more energy in the afternoons now that I'm not plunking down in my chair after lunch. I have lost a pound so far. My doc was also very happy about the lack of sitting when I had my physical two weeks ago.

To try it, flip over a sturdy cardboard box and put your computer and keyboard up there for a few days and see how it feels. I eventually had my son in law build me a permanent one--it measures 12"H x 36"W x 24"D. It is not as ambitious as the tread desk, but it's better than sitting.
