Colonel Cator Sparks is a journalist for a variety of magazines and websites.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia Cator attended the College of Charleston where he majored in French and later the American College in London where he graduated with honors with a Fashion Marketing degree. Since moving to New York City in 1999 Cator has worked in both beauty and fashion PR, which lead to his transition to a full time journalist.
Cator has no problem tackling a good fashion story or event since he is out and about nearly every night whether it be the Frick Ball uptown or a Visionaire party downtown. Cator has been featured for his own dandified style in Ike Ude’s Style File, The Daily Telegraph, Stylelikeu.com and in Bill Cunningham’s section of The New York Times, Evening Hours.
Cator lives in a townhouse in Harlem where he has been Block President for four years running. Recently Cator was commissioned a Colonel of Kentucky by Governor Steven L. Beshear and has requested all friends and family call him ‘Colonel Cator’ from now on.
We have all done it -- admired an image yet never given much thought of where it came from, or who created it. But once I met photographers Markus and Indrani and went through the images they showed me I was blown...

I have covered my fair share of art, from Art Basel to the Armory and I have to say, so many artists are just plain b-o-r-i-n-g. Sorry, I didn't know art was so serious or that my talking to you was going to upset your equilibrium. Some fashion people can...
Looking through all of the current fall fashion magazines you would think we were back in the '80s. It's all fur and leather on everyone all the time. Again? But just where exactly do the skins for those $50,000 crocodile jackets come from? Where did the cattle that Fendi uses...
Spring has sprung around most of America and people are shedding their sleepy winter ways to reveal that old pep in their step. It's also a time for spring cleaning, getting back into a serious gym routine and giving your body that once-over we never like to admit we do....
I have spent a good deal of time in Texas. I am fortunate enough to have several friends with ranches and with tales of the Wild West woven through their family history. I have always been impressed at the amount of generosity, humor and Cowpoke common sense these people have...
When I first covered the delightful and energetic photographic duo Markus and Indrani, they were just wrapping up the unending editing of their first short film, The Legend of Lady White Snake. During New York Fashion Week they were finally able to...
On a very rainy Tuesday night, I headed over to the Design Building on Lexington to check out an exhibit of photographs and fashion I had been hearing quite a bit of buzz about, Italian Films: Photographs from Italian Cinema in the 1960's.
Monday night was a train wreck. Not in a bad way, people, it was a beautiful sight. For the American Ballet Theatre's spring gala, the trend of the evening was dresses with trains. Why, there was...
My friends always roll their eyes when I tell them I am heading to some exotic locale. They just know I am going to come back in full local drag. After India I was wearing turbans, after Egypt I was in countless caftans and now that I have just arrived...
Monday night I spent an amusing evening at the Soho Rep spring gala at the Highline Ballroom getting down on hamburgers (Yay! No rubber chicken gala dinner!) and watching seven snippets of pieces from past and present productions from Soho Rep.
It's market week in New York, and it's like fashion week all over again! I always forget how hectic the week becomes, hitting countless showrooms to see the collections, catching up with PR peeps, and maybe having a PBR or some strawberries on a...
Every Man's Dream -- A wall of perfectly parted hair style choices
There is a lot of talk today about men going under the knife to keep their youthful appearance. But Sunday night during the New York Fashion Week frazzle I headed to Christie's...
On Wednesday night a rather grand affair took place at Carlton Hobbs' gallery. The always amusing Englishman hosted a bedazzling group of people in his home/gallery to celebrate the new exhibit, "Inspired By Antiquity, Classical Influences I 18th and 19th Century Furniture and Decorative Objects."
Lady Gaga is usually up on everything au courant but recently she really missed the spot. In her 'Telephone' song she pleads with her man to stop calling her:
Stop callin', stop callin', I don't wanna talk anymore I...
