What's Wrong With Arizona Lawmakers?

Posted: 02/03/10 07:01 PM ET

Last year, I took a proactive role in the largest non-profit reproductive
health and education organization in the State, Planned Parenthood of
Arizona. Following in my grandmother and mother's footsteps, I became a
member of the board of trustees. In addition, to better understand the work
this organization does, I volunteered in a local clinic.

The December 2009 issue of Phoenix Magazine paid homage to my family's
involvement in this organization throughout the years. Only then did it
occur to me to ask, "Is my involvement because of my family influence, or because I
truly feel a passion for the mission of the organization?" I never felt an
obligation or pressure to be active; however, my family's involvement
definitely opened my eyes.

Back in the 1930s, my grandmother, Peggy Goldwater, helped a team of women
assist Margaret Sanger in setting up one of Arizona's first Planned
Parenthood health centers. She was very brave in a time when birth
control, sex education, and other such topics were not discussed.

Here in Arizona, Planned Parenthood's community evolution has been
significant for our state; teaching women and men about sexual education,
sexually transmitted infections (STIs), birth control and most importantly,
empowering personal responsibility for their bodies, a topic that many
families struggle to discuss. In addition to vital reproductive information,
a small portion of what P.P.A. services offer is a medical termination
procedure. This procedure is performed only after a woman has carefully
reviewed the situation with the medical staff and her family. Then, at that
time, she is given a choice. Local government interference has eroded the
rights of women to exercise their legal rights regarding when and how they
reproduce.

Unfortunately, proper sexual education is still limited in our state.
Arizona youth are being taught abstinence-only lectures, which have
been proven ineffective as Arizona teen pregnancy rates continue to
climb. I was shocked to hear that nearly 50 teenage girls are getting
pregnant in Arizona every day. Planned Parenthood offers sexuality
education that is abstinence-based, but also comprehensive and medically
accurate so that Arizona teens are equipped with the information they need to
make educated decisions. Local government interference has eroded the rights
of women to exercise their legal rights regarding when and how they
reproduce.

Arizona lawmakers are being ignorant about this subject in passing a new
state regulation known as the omnibus abortion law. This law creates substantial
burdens on some pregnant women, increases cost, and denies access to
services for women who seek abortion and some methods of contraception. It
is designed to make accessing abortion and contraceptive care in Arizona
more complicated while also making it difficult for medical providers to
offer accessible, affordable care. We run the risk, if we continue down
this path, of losing lives because women will be forced to revert back to
taking the matter into their own hands if there is not a safe, legal provider.

What was once a non-political topic has become just the opposite.
Politicians want to demonstrate compassion, but are actually harming the
services family planning centers provide for women and girls who are
frequently left to fend for themselves I don't know any politician who can
get through a campaign without being asked their opinion on the subject.

Choice is a woman's decision. Now, unfortunately, it's become the
bailiwick for all politicians and their view often play a significant role
in who's and how much support they garner. I ask you: don't they have any
other better topics to debate?

Considering Arizona leadership's conservative nature, one would expect for
the state's residents to be non-supportive on the issue of choice, when in
fact it's just the opposite. Many who support choice are closeted, fearing
they will let their party down by standing up for this controversial
subject.

Thirty-seven years ago Roe versus Wade decided this issue nationwide, and
now it appears Arizona and other states are going backwards. Unfortunately,
most in local government are still living in the dark ages. For instance,
one of Arizona's more exclusive communities, Paradise Valley has a mayor who
still refers to Planned Parenthood as a "pro-abortion organization." No
one is pro-abortion. It takes a lot of soul searching to arrive at the
decision to end a pregnancy. This decision may hinge on factors such as
paternity, timing, or health and welfare of the mother. No other
organization does more to prevent abortion in the state of Arizona than
Planned Parenthood. Similar to faith and values, choice is personal right.
Having a family is a magnificent gift, having that choice is ours and ours
alone.

So, in many ways, my grandmother Peggy and my mother Joanne had a big
influence on me. They got involved with other hard working women to help
make a difference for all women in Arizona. And my grandfather, the late
Senator Barry Goldwater stood by Peggy by saying "no one should tell a
woman what to do with their bodies. It's private matter and should be left
to the individual. Government should stay the hell out of it. It's not up
for political debate." As family we always knew where he stood.

I have had some great individuals influencing me, but it has always come
down to my personal beliefs and commitment to the cause. Whether I am
volunteering in one of Planned Parenthood Arizona's health centers, or my
new role as a trustee, it is important to have a full understanding of the
organization and have the dedication to do what I can to help.

These are my thoughts; this is my passion. Think about it, and please do all
you can to support family planning. Don't be afraid to speak from your heart,
and join me in celebrating the lives of women everywhere.

CC, you are truly a blessing for the people of Arizona by defending women's right to determine the fate of their own bodies. I'm sure your granddad Barry is rolling in his grave when he watches today's national political atmosphere, particularly embodied in the flagrant hypocrisy of the Senator he mentored, John McCain, from whom he broke away. Both McCain & Jon Kyle need to be banished from the Senate by voters of good conscience standing up for their own principles. Abortion or reproductive freedom has no legitimate place in political debate, any more than men's sexuality should be a matter of partisan discord. The day that a man can be impregnated & carry a baby in his womb for 9 months is when men will have a right to tell women how to handle their own sexuality & growing fertilized eggs inside them. Patriarchal government has no constitutional authority over women's personal physiology.

Thank you Ms.Goldwater for your continued efforts with Planned Parenthood. I have been a supporter for decades and will continue to do so.
I live to see the day when a womens reproductive organs get out of the halls of politics. I find it none of both male and female business what I do with my doctor. I have often said when I can tell a man when he can or can NOT ejaculate, he can tell me what to do with my body. Why after all these years is topic still being discussed?

The christian right has been working day and night for many years to deprive women of their rights and president Obama gives these people legitimacy by attending their prayer breakfasts or tolerating women hating right wing democrats to contaminate even the health care bill. Unless people start standing up to these theocrats the future will be bleak for american women.

I wish just one time. A store clerk would refuse to sell a condom.

????? Or a kumquat, or a bath sponge or some dishwasher detergent???

Surely it would depend on what the condom wanted to buy?

Thanks Ms. Goldwater for informative article

Many people don't realize that the intentions of many on the ultra-right/ religious right are to ban abortions as well as many oral contraceptives (OC).

Indeed there has been a significant increase in religious based pharmacy schools; and many of the graduates from these institutions will actually (illegally) refuse to fill prescriptions for OC or Plan B (often claiming that the medication is temporarily out of stock)

By characterizing life as starting at the point of conception, any procedure (including the act of taking an oral contraceptive) which leads to the loss of the embryo can be classified as an abortion.

Since oral contraceptives work by either preventing ovulation or by preventing implantation of the fertilized egg...they can ostensibly be classified as abortifacients...

Thus a ban in abortions will also lead to a ban in OC...and a loss of OC will leave women with ineffective alternatives which could ultimately lead to higher incidences of unwanted pregnancies

We progressives must remain vigilant because every encroachment on abortion rights brings women closer to being unable to control their reproductive organs and their bodies...

In essence the right wing theory is that a woman forfeits her life the moment an ovum meets some sperm. At that moment any potential life is far more important than the life of the mother. The mother has become a vehicle that no longer has any free will since that vehicle has forfeited the right to self preservation over and above that of the potential life.

In theocracies and especially patriarchal ones women must never be permitted to approach equality or contemplate free will. They are vessels and servants but never full fledged members of the ruling class, AKA, the patriarchs.

When you have "non-contracepted sex", what you're having is sex, not planning a family. It happens in the back seat of cars, storage closets, desk tops, men's and women's bathrooms, standing, sitting, lying, and for the truly agile, upside down. You're having sex, often fueled by raging, simmering or boiling hormones, augmented by impossible dreams, completely unrealistic fantasies and wishful thinking, and often, alcohol and/or other drugs. It's sex, and it doesn't discriminate for age, race or gender. We have the knowledge (where it's allowed to be shared with those that need it most; 10-20 year olds), technology and ability to prevent egg implantation ranging from condoms to morning after pills. Making sex education, REAL sex education based on actual body function and not just abstinence, mandatory from age 10 through high school, would make pregnancy and STD rates plummet. Your Grandfather was right, "government should stay the hell out of it."
Ms. Goldwater, I truly hope that you run for office. This state desperately needs legislators that have come out of the cave and into broad daylight, seeing our state's needs, and trusting the state's women to make good choices for themselves and their families.

I completely agree with the previous poster about running for political office in Arizona. I live in Cochise County in AZ..

Arizona, and our country need smart, and honest elected officials to do what is right for the people of our state and our country.

You, Ms. Goldwater, have a family legacy whose foundation is integrity.

Having just read ProPublica's article on the increase in maternal deaths due to pregnancy complications, I'm curious to know whether there has been a similar increase in other states. Certainly this needs to be closely monitored in Arizona to see whether there is a link between the state and local laws placing burdens on pregnant women and deaths due to pregnancy complications.

When you have non-contracepted sex, except in the case of rape, you have already implicitly chosen to reproduce. When the sperm fertilizes the egg, you have already reproduced, so the term 'reproductive rights' is bogus. Then what you are asking for is the right to kill, destroy, dispose of the human [with all the DNA of both parents] which you have already reproduced. for once, lefties, be candid. We never have an empty category called 'choice;' it is always the choice for or against something, in this case, the-choice-for-abortion-which-is-the-destruction-of-a-pre-born-baby.

Before it's born, it's not a baby. A seed has all the DNA of an adult tree, but if you called a seed a tree you'd be dead wrong. Embryos and fetuses are not babies.

Thank you for your committment to girls and women in Arizona! An a third generation Arizonan, I feel the Republican Party here has undermined and eroded basic tenets of freedom. The ideologues have been blinded to the concept that a girl/woman, as a fully formed and autonomous person, should have the ability to control her own body and whether or not to risk her life in the pregnancy process. I too have volunteered for Planned Parenthood and have used their services. It is a wonderful organization. Please continue the great work! One day, Arizona will have a statue set up in Bolin Park, at the capital, to honor those who worked hard and diligently to help girls and women attain Reproductive Freedom.
